If Isreal is a leader in military technology, why do they buy American and (formerly) French fighter jets?

You're right about the agriculture though, they took a dried up dead hunk of desert that the Arabs wanted nothing to do with for the last few hundred years and made it flourish. And now they want it back.

To save money they buy great American/French aircrafts and modify them to their needs (some of the technology in those aircrafts are a lot better than the US).

And besides, why spend money on making your own aircrafts when you can buy aircrafts from other countries which they already been proven useful in wars.
