So I picked up a brand new in-box 27" three mode (VGA,CGA,EGA) monitor today from Happ's. They have a local store here in Indy so I did not have to pay shipping, which was obviously awesome.

The make is a MAKVISION and after some minor tweeking it is looking really really nice. I bought the Makvision after talking with the main technician at Happ's for quite some time about it. He recommended it over all other monitors from Happ's. Which is interesting because it is slightly cheaper than the Wells and Garner. It also has a one year warranty.

So now I have a WIDE array of monitors from different manufacturers, and plan on doing side by side comparisons on as many as possible. Hopefully this will help people when making a decision on purchasing a monitor.

Right now I would still say the Nanao tri-sync is still my nicest overall but of all the others it is looking like the Makvision is a close second.

This monitor is going in one of my astros and will be verted for some high-rez ikaruga and under defeat action, should be really cool...

More will follow.

Excellent news! Thanks for volunteering the info on the comparisons. I've always been curious about the quality of the Wells versus other monitors.

that sounds pretty cool chris, lucky you live close enough to not have to pay for shipping. I just tri-sych'd my new astro city, I must say 31khz is pretty impressive, especially with my dreamcast on it.

Makvision also makes a 25" if you are looking for a replacement for your neo.

I been thinking of upgrading the monitor in my Astro City, mine has a bit of burn in. Does the makavision 27" fit the astro with no modification?

You'll need to use the monitor mounting hardware that is on your current astro's monitor if you intend to do a swap. Also, I believe the astro's input harnesses (power + rgb) are proprietary. I don't think i've ever seen ones like the likes of sega monitors before, so you'll probably need to do some hacking.

Last night I was able to get the Makvision in one of my astros with a little extra effort. I had to file the monitor frame mounts on the Makvision a little to make the holes wide enough to accomodate the astros mounting bolts. It fit like a charm after that.

The other issue is the Makvision is 100% flat, so there is a bit of a gap on the sides where the astros bezel curve does not match the flatness of the Mak.

All and all I am VERY happy with the swap, verted Ikaruga in high rez is pretty fucking amazing. Also all seven of my cabs are up and running now!!! Awesome! The other great thing is now I have an extra Toshsiba tube from a Nanao MS8 to put in to tri-rez. That will be three high rez monitors...not bad.

Anyhow will post pics soon, my friend has my digital camera.

What did you do with the old MS8 chassis? Is it dead? If you still have it, a friend of mine desperately needs one for parts.

Also, I would get some black foam tape to help combat the gaps. On my astro 2, the top of the bose speaker housing actaully has a 1/4" gap, but what sega did is put thick foam tape to seal it up. When applied, you can't even notice it.

Dude,

I WISH the chassis for my MS8 still worked. It got fried when I was doing a monitor swap. Still really don't know what caused it...

That's what started all this tri-sync business in the first place, I was out a monitor and needed a good replacement.

I really love the Nanao monitors, as far as geometry, visual pop and sharpness it just doesn't get any better.
