First, I usually look for a fighter that appeals to me looks wise or storyline wise then I try them out. I'll then go on the net and look at some FAQ's and print out the movelist. I don't always pay attention to the combo's or strategies section cuz usually the strats and combos arent to my liking(except for tekken) so I like to make up my own strategies and combos but once in a blue moon i'll go by the strategies and combos in the FAQ. I don't purposely go for the fighter with the best moves most powerful moves ever cuz thats shallow. I'll play the game with that character on one difficulty level then i move it up each time I beat it.
Once I get a grip on that character i'll get my brother or a friend to use a really cheap or easy character to use against me and tell them to repeat a hard to stop or cheap move on me so i'll improve my game. Like for SF III i made my brother shoot fireballs at me repeatedly so i could learn to parry good then i made him perform hurricane kicks on me and now I can parry hurricane kicks and multi hitting fireballs. I also made him do the same things on me so I can use Geese Howard's counters better so now my Geese Howard skills are a nightmare for any shoto user. I got my friend to scrub me to death with Paul Phoenix's "phoenix smasher" to the point where I learned to reverse it and sidestep it. When I use my favorite grapplers like Orochi Yashiro, Clark, Hugo, Alex and Zangief I repeately practice ways to combo in my command throws and supers and not just do them right out of the blue. So in a way i put myself thru a sort of "bootcamp", hehe.
For Some reason the characters I tend to like are very difficult to use, I don't choose them because of their difficulty its just that I choose my characters based on looks and most of the time I usually end up with a real doozie of a character to learn.
