After wasting $14 on SamSho Sen today I figured I'd see what some of your biggest SNK disappointments have been over the years.

The October 2001 shutdown?

LoSJ?

No MOTW2?

Terrible 3D sequels?

I was really disappointed they pulled out of the US market with the NGPC.
I guess the writing was on the wall,
but that along with SEGA pulling the DC sort of made it
a pretty sad gaming landscape to me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did I mention kof 12?
Because if that isn't a cherry on top, I don't know what is.
The 3D metal slug game. It had potential if it was an online multiplayer where you could works as teams or even like call of duty but with metal slug stuff.
Other than what you already mentioned (Samurai Showdown Sen)....
Picked up the titles below on release as MVS kits from the neo-store. Was very, very disappointed...
Samurai Showdown V
Biggest SNK let down... being a Sam Sho fan. Tried over and over to get into it... Never clicked for me. Didn't like the style or atmosphere either.
Dis-honorable mention:
Sengoku 3 (So bland and soul-less compared to the first 2)
Rage of the Dragons (Nice intro, but didn't care for the game itself)
Yeah there were other crappy games (usually 3D stuff, other playmore titles, etc), but at that point I had already given up hope or lowered my expectations. SSV was the first and had the biggest impact in terms of tarnishing my own personal image of "SNK".
How far into development did that game get before they finally pulled the plug?
WTF SSV?
That game is awesome. How is that game a let down? Its broken yes, but the additions were cool. My main issue was dumb enlightenment and the near heartless background animations. Honestly, I liked it. Don't regret getting the US home version around release either. Suija was such a cool character to play as in 2D also.
I agree about Sengoku 3. That game was fucking junk. Who the hell put those tiny ass frog enemies in there, its so 'unfun' to play that game with enemies who can only be hit in dumb manner.
Well, they actually released it on PS2 some years ago.
That´s the biggest letdown for me - i bought it on release, played it for about two hours and tossed it away on ebay right afterwards.
This game sucked so much that it was embarassing.
You can waste about ten precious minutes of your time here - and no, the other stages don´t look better or play better:
The "Hyper 64" :crying:
SNK really signed their death sentance with the disaster of the Hyper 64.
That MS3D sure does look like a load of shit.
How exactly were people disappointed with the Hyper? I thought the hardware was pretty impressive when it came out, but the way they abandoned it so early in its life was disappointing. It had potential, and could have quite possibly saved them if they'd stuck with it.
Hewitson you are spot on with the above comment.
I still love the Hyper 64 :glee:
I agree, it's still one of my fave arcade systems and it only has 6 games in it's library. Sometimes I wish someone would make a quality homebrew game just to see what the system can do when pushed to it's limit. Shit, the game doesn't even need to have 3D capabilities since the 2D is just beautiful on the Hyper.
I tried, just didn't feel "fun" to me. Playing a real person (physically & internet) who knows how to play helps, but it still was lacking somehow.
I want to chalk it up to:
- having rose colored glasses in terms of the past samurai showdowns
- tastes have changed/matured/etc etc
- not being able to play it in the "wild" of an arcade vs. random strangers
But to me, the truth is that it's just not up to snuff. You always hope a series gets better or at least matches the quality of previous iterations. But in my eyes SSV just doesn't (even if the factors listed above don't count), so it's a disappointment.
Yeah I definitely tried to get into it. Heck I paid money, I wanted to get my money's worth. I wanted to be open minded to one of my favorite gaming companies and franchise.
The game definitely has some nice pluses to it, which I did appreciate. However it just wasn't enough to prop the whole thing up, imho of course.
Another game that was a bummer was SVC chaos. Picked up the JAMMA board version on release. Later on got an MVS cart cheap for the ease of game swapping/selecting. I like this one just a tad bit more than SSV, but overall I think it's pretty whack also. :lol:
Actually, I really liked the Hyper. FFWA, Buriki One and the Sam Sho's we're pretty fun.
The Hyper Neo.
Their inability to seal a deal that allowed them to release PS2 ports of their Neo library in the US during the time period when people might have bought them.
Not keeping Terry as the official face of their company.
Not taking advantage of the fighting game rebirth of 2009.
Boob touching games.
No Garou sequel.
No Cool Cool Toon sequel.
SvC Chaos (I enjoy it, but it's not a good game IMO.)
No home port for Buriki One or the SS Hyper games.
SS: Warrior's Rage PSX-top notch cast and story CRIMINALLY wasted by an unsatisfying game engine.
Creating a terrible new cast of main characters and story for KOF: MI (although I like how fucking crazy it is to use aliens.)
I could go on, but these are the ones that frustrate me the most when I think of SNK's failures following 2000.
Afaik, this was a japanese release only.
Thank God, they spared the rest of the world from having to play this.
Hyper 64 not getting any 2D love.
SamSho 6 not having blood.
KOF XII being unfinished/netcode busticated.
No Nam '76/ghost pilots 2/pinball/ fill in the blank for more diversity on MVS & homecart.
Neo Geo Pocket Color
Just when I find a portable system who's games I like, plays well in the sun (curse you original Game Boy Advance), and has a long battery life SNK decides to recall all of the games from the store shelves. WTF. THEN release the system and 8 games in some f'ed up compilation pack. WTF?!?!?!?
Going out of business was the most disappointing for me. I had a sinking feeling that the magic was gone for good.
Yeah. I second that. I can forgive them all the other stuff, since they gave us so many beautiful games. But seeing this huge comeback of fighting games and SNK only playing a minor part in it, is truly disappointing.
SNK's backruptcy. That was the most dissapointing event of SNK's history bar SNK-P's complete and utter fuck up of almost every IP they had the rights to.
KOF XII was the biggest disappointment. I think we all had been waiting for a refresh to the series and when it finally comes out... well, we all know.
I'd say the bankruptcy, but idk if disappointment is the right word. That was more just sadness because you knew it was just going to fall apart from there. There's no way the company was going to reform into something better given how the company never really made steps forward all these years (they had Hyper 64 and tossed it). It's all been downhill from there.
