I dont think this has been mentioned, Super Fantasy Zone. A very cutesy one, still good fun.

You need to buy a Everdrive MD.

Then you can enjoy all the fantastic shooters (and any other genre) to your hearts content.

Twinkle Tale

Standard fare here, but I was scanning to see if anyone mentioned this and you're the only one who did.

Love Twinkle Tale. Sad that it gets forgotten most of the time.

Some great stuff mentioned here; I would cosign on most opinions so far. Happen to LOVE Aleste myself, weird to see it get hated on.

Conspicuous by its absence is Phelios.

Man, is this port cracking! I prefer it to the coin-op.

Voice, great theme, super music, software scaling...so much to love here.

Aero Blasters is not so bad either.
Otherwise the already mentioned Gaiares, Gleylancer and Trouble Shooter are my favorite shooters on the MD.

This thread has reminded me of the plan I had ages ago to a) buy a copy of Gunstar Heroes and b) mod my megadrive to play US/JAP games...

If anyone's interested in Grind Stormer for Genesis be sure to check if the copy you're buying is tested. Tengen shipped a bunch of duds, and since it goes for about $30 CIB it's probably worth it to make sure it boots and plays fine.

Here's a list of shmups on the Mega Drive. Anything in square brakcets "[]" means that that game in general has an alternate title. The list is as follows:

Action 52
Aero Blasters
Alien Soldier
Aleste [MUSHA]
Arrow Flash
Atomic Robo-Kid
Battle Squadron
Bio Hazard Battle
Bio Ship Paladin [Gunship Gomora]
Burning Force
Cross Fire [Super Air Wolf]
Contra Hard Corps
Curse
Dangerous Seed
Darwin 4081
Divine Sealing
Elemental Master
Eliminate Down
Fire Mustang
Fire Shark
Forgotten Worlds
Gadget Twins
Gaiares
Gain Ground
Gley Lancer
Grind Stormer
Gynoug [Wings of Wor] -- no, this is not a typo
Heavy Unit
Hellfire
Insector X
Magic Girl
Master of Weapons
Mega SWIV (Silk Worm 4 is what SWIV stands for -- Silk Worm being on the NES)
Phelios
Raiden Trad
Sagaia [Darius 2]
Slap Fight
Smash TV
Sol-Deace
Steel Empire [Battlewings]
Sub Terrania
Super Fantasy Zone
Super Space Invaders
Task Force Harrier EX
Thunderforce 2
Thunderforce 3
Thunderforce 4 [Lightening Force]
Trouble Shooter
Trouble Shooter 2 [Battlemania 2]
Truxton [Tatsujin]
Twin Cobra
Twin Hawk
Twinkle Tale
Undead Line
Vapor Trail
Verytex
Viewpoint
Whip Rush
XDR X-Dazedly-Ray
Xenon 2
Zero Wing

In my opinion, I think Contra Hard Corps is the best out of all of them. I'm a big fan of side scrolling shoot 'em ups, as well as a fan of the Contra series in general. It's incredibly hard though. Most people say it was mainly made for fan service towards the hardcore Contra fans out there.

This. I have a copy that hard locks after the third stage, everytime. Big bummer, cause it is a great game otherwise.

I thnk the Thunder Force games were great. I still fire up the Genesis to play them. MUSHA was a blast but the game was over too soon. The soundtrack was amazing.

If you can get your hands on a Mega CD.... Sol Deace had a great soundtrack and the shooting was nice too. I had a lot of fun with it.
