As some of you may know, I did not have lots of Nintendo action in my life but always liked games like Smash Brothers and Mario Kart.

I've been playing Mario Kart 8 on Wii U for quite a while now with my buddies and I really love it. I even managed to get that wiggle-waggle steering wheel thingy down and now even prefer ir over using a pad/stick...

As I still have a Gamecube, I thought about getting Double Dash for it. My buddy Tom (who is responsible for turning me on to MK 8) says it's his favorite game of the series but I'm sure there are better ones than that.

So - what's the best one and why? Console versions only, please.

NB, one of my friends says that playing MK in an advanced age lets your willy shrink. Hope he's wrong there as I will be going to another meetup on Friday and most probably will play lotsa MK 8... :(

Double Dash is still my favorite. The 2 riders per cart coupled with unique specials for each character was awesome. It also has my 2 favorite MK levels; Baby Park and DK Mountain. The only thing I wish it had was more levels. Every Mario Kart since has had "classic levels" in addition to the original ones thus doubling the amount of cups/levels.

Mario Kart 8 is great though and my 2nd favorite console MK.

Double dash also. Use to love playing that drunk. I'll never forget looking at the opponents screen and as soon as that blue shell popped up and my buddies and I reversing at full speed cause of the impending doom. ;)

MK64 probably tops my list. I liked DD mainly for the 2 power up thing, but not really my fave. MK Wii is still one I play regularly.

The original is the best. Anyone saying otherwise must have really sucked at the 1st one.

Absolutely, no doubt about it. They consolized the Power Drift premise and really took it on another level. But for anyone who started with 8, it could be easy to acknowledge the brilliance of the 1st entry, but it also could be difficult to get into. Still, the balance between a great professional racing game and a luck preferring fun racer was never better accomplished than in the original MK.

Voting for Mario Kart64 is like voting Castlevania64 as best Castlevania. Well, it's not quite the same, because Castlevania 64 isn't the absolute worst of the series. I might vote 8, actually, despite having the strongest nostalgic connection to the original. It's called objectivity. Something the generation who were kids in the mid-'90s were apparently somehow born without.

I like when I can hit people with thrown forward bananas, it makes me feel accomplished.
8- apparently I should try double dash by getting my wii out tho? I didn't have my own snes and would get womped at friends. never tried 64: is there a 3ds one? I don't have one of those...so yeah 8 is better than the wii one #becausegraphics! rolling floors !!except rainbow ones.

I have soft spot for MK64 and DD, as I grew up with them and both have different flavors of levels. I love battle mode in MK64 and the tracks are well designed. MK8 is an excellent game, and the additional levels just make it that much more awesome, especially 200cc mode.

I've only played the original, 64 and MK on the Wii. Somehow, despite having a GC, I missed DD.

Personally, I like the SNES one the best, but 64 was also very good. Wii was "off" to me for some reason, I think it was the unfair advantage the system would give shitty racers via shitty items. I do not like games that artificially "level" the playing feld when one player is better than the rest.

8 probably is my favorite. MK hasn't really changed much since Double Dash, so there are less good feels for the newer ones but objectively speaking I think 8 is better than the rest. They are all good though, the only one I didn't care for was 7 on the 3DS, it never really held my interest.

I do understand the love for the SNES original. It's a great game, and it has a certain something that was lost when the game moved to 3D.

Also, I DARE any of you to race against Tw3ek.

They are all great and having to offer. Mario Kart Super Circuit has some of the best balance and unique stages that were not seen anywhere else. Mario Kart DS was all kinds of awesome and the first to be online until snaking completely ruined it, hell this one was even played at Evo one year. I have a huge soft spot for 8 with it having one of the best game soundtracks ever recorded and just amazing in every way except for the botched Battle Mode. MK 64 I remember putting in the most hours on thanks to 4-player Battle. The original on SNES is of course incredible except that the battle mode could be broken in that it can actually run out of items without there being a winner which means you have to quit.

this is a hard one. i enjoy them all, but mario kart 64 is the one i spent most time with. love double dash, but the levels feel a little too short. love the visuals of mario kart wii, but the game does lack the energy the other mario karts have.

I remember the Double Dash controvery with EGM when the game almost got perfect scores across the board.

And that compiles my experience with Mario Kart post-N64.

8, but I'm still amazed that there's not battle mode. At least not in battle arenas. Also one of the best DLC ever.

I have no SNES so I guess I'll go with DD first.

It's quite expensive on German ebay, usually goes for around 30 Euros... that's more than I want to pay to be honest, let's see whether I can find it locally for a better price.

MK 8 is great, lots of tracks, nice graphics and gameplay is tight. I prefer motorbikes over the karts, though. :)

That is a tough question. When I received my SNES for Christmas Super Mario Kart was one of the games I got along with it so there is plenty of nostalgia to go along with that, and it is probably one of my top 10 favorite SNES games, although I think Street Racer is just as good. I loved the level design in 64 but I haven't played it in a long time. Double Dash I played a ton but I kinda hate how unfair the computer is on the higher difficulty levels. I have not played the Wii or WiiU versions. If you are buying one for multiplayer I would probably go with DD but single player the SNES one may be the best. I did not enjoy the DS game.
