I used to be a big fan, but in the last few years the only fighter I really pay much attention to is Manny.

Oh too bad. Well Glen Johnson got a tko win over Allen green lastnight and Marquez had to retire against Lopez because of shoulder injury.

Will you be watching Manny's next fight?

I probably won't pay for it on pay per view, but if its on HBO the following week I'll watch it there. I haven't even been watching 24/7 either.

Boxing is on life support right now if not dead, it needs a jump start and only Manny vs. Mayweather can do that.

It's not dead at all, there are fights all the time. Before the end of the year...

Froch vs Abraham and Marquez vs Katsidis, martinez vs williams 2 , Haye vs Harrison, Wladimir Klitschko vs Chisora.

and quite a few others as well :)

That's an epic pic

And I dare say boxing isn't dead, as well. Obviously it's not as popular as it was and the sport just needs to continue adapting especially with the growth of MMA. But amateur boxing is apparently still pretty big. I used to train at a USA Boxing gym and they had boxers going to events all the time, it seemed.

i remember when Tonk had a few of us on Kelly Pavliks jock after he pulled that awesome win out of his ass against Jermaine Taylor.

That fight showed he had a lot of heart....but the loss that followed against Hopkins proves that a fighters spirit can only get you so far.

Kicking peoples asses for a living is like any other trade....you gotta have the right tools and have enough of them or you won't be in business for too long.

Okay, boxing isn't dead... but it sure as hell isn't a fraction as popular as it used to be.

Maybe in America, but people can still shift 50 thousand seater stadiums like Manny, so it can't be that dead.

We have David Haye fighting in the U.K at the weekend (can't stand the guy though) and 20,000 tickets are sold.

In Germany boxing is huge, the big fights get half the tv viewing audience , 13 plus million people and boxers like the Klitschkos shift 50,000 seater stadiums.

Not what I would call dead. In the U.K tv is a problem, it's all subscription tv or ppv, in the past we got boxing on free to air tv.

Well put, Twilight. I'll add this video to the mix, I totally agree with this guy -

I have to agree that the promotion of boxing isn't what it used to be, and certainly isn't there compared to MMA these days (no knock at MMA, which I also love). But boxing as a sport is still going strong.

Sorry to go in a different direction, but I thought I'd jump on the "awesome old fight post" bandwagon and bring up one of my favorite fights of all time.

"Marvelous" Marvin Hagler is my favorite boxer of all time (Tyson in his murderous rampage days is #2). When he went to war with Tommy Hearns, there was a lot of bad blood between the two, and everyone expected a good fight.

What everyone got likely far surpassed any expectations. The first round alone is often pointed out by boxing fans as the greatest round ever. The fight would end in the third round with Hagler the winner by KO. RING magazine voted this fight Fight of the Year in 1985.

Man, so many twists and turns in that first round alone. I've always had a special place in my heart for swarmers and in-fighters - Tyson being one of my faves :vik:

Hmm, over here big boxing matches will get coverage in the papers, even if just a little. But, mma is never in the papers. Only online.

Overall the coverage for boxing in the media is mostly just online though, unless a brit fighter is involved.

With regards to the hw scene, the trouble is all the american challengers get beat by the klitschkos , and I think a lot of american fans would rather see american fighters being the champ.

what do you think?

This is what Iron Mike thinks....
