I guess it comes out next weekend (December 6th), according to the reports from Play Asia. Anyone else interested in how this game is going to come out? I'm especially interested in how the paddle attachment will work, but I don't know how good this game will be... with the screen being split in two. I plan on getting it regardless and let you guys know my impressions, if you're interested.

I wish I had Contra 4 to spend time with, but can't get it since it's not out here in Japan. Actually, I have no idea if it ever will come out in Japan...

Have it for Taito F3, but will probably pick it up anyway. The perfect game to make you forget the people in the airplane seats on either side of you have a good 30% or more of their body hanging over your armrest.

I loved the GBA Paddle too. I'm going to wait for some player reviews and pick it up. Knowing it's Arkanoid, there shouldn't be much Japanese in the game.

After playing the demo, I am definitely looking forward to this:

Not a bad trial but I wish they did it with the screen the other way as that gap really can mess you up when it gets faster and especially when you have the 3 balls going. The laser I dont like anymore since its a wider shot now.

But if the price is right I will still pick it up.

Thanks for the link to the trial. I went ahead and ordered it on Play-Asia. I would have went through NCXS but it was almost ten dollars more because I'm in New York and I pay taxes.

I saw that EGM Japan (Famitsu) gave it a pretty good score. I think it was 8,8,8,9 but don't quote me on that.

Yeah, I might have to pick this one up. Arkanoid has always been awesome, being able to take it with you and have the right controls for the game, would be fantastic, too bad I'm broke as hell right now, and have both a trip to California and Christmas going on this month.... If you're reviews are really good for this I might have to pick it up this week so I have it for the plane rides.

It's here... just got it today at the local game shop. Got this with the white DS paddle controller.

Played for about 1/2 hour so far. If you played the demo that someone posted in this thread, that's a good taste of the first part of "Clear Game" mode. If you're not liking the demo, you won't like this game.

This is a mode that has you play 5 stages in the beginning. After 5 stages, you will see a map that is laid out like a pyramid, and you have to choose the next area that you want to clear. Think of it like the Outrun pyramid. You complete one stage, you branch out and choose the next area you want to try. Yes, the game saves your progress as you go along, so you don't have to start from the bottom of the pyramid every time you quit. Just to be safe, pause the game and save your progress.

There is also "Quest Game" mode, where you have to fulfill requirements during each match. It'll be helpful to know Japanese in this mode, judging from the screenshots in the booklet. One example, I believe, is to hit 2 orange blocks in a certain level, but you only can bounce the energy ball off your Vaus up to 10 times.

There's also a Wi-Fi mode where you can play up to 4 players! There's also a Vs. COM mode, but I have no idea how that works.

Basic Gameplay: You have a barrier on the bottom, and each time you miss the ball with your Vaus ship, you lose a barrier level. Think of it as 4 chances/lives to beat a level. You do have your barrier replenished after every level. If your Vaus ship dies, you have the option to continue the level. I don't think there's a limit on continues, but I'm playing the Normal level of "Clear Game" mode.

Music has a bit of range so far... I heard techno/trance the first 5 stages, then some really upbeat jazz-fusion music the next 5. Backgrounds are nice to look at and the split screen isn't as much of a hindrance as I thought it would be. Your screen is long, so it gives you ample time to react. A lot of the mistakes I made felt it was my fault, not because of the 2 screens. One drawback is that the power-ups take a bit longer to fall down than other Arkanoid games.

Game is pretty solid with controls. That new paddle attachment, albeit huge, feels fine and works well with the game. It works for DS Lite and DS Phat. The paddle add-on has one end that is exactly as big as a GBA cart, but the other end is bigger than 2 GBA carts combined... with a knob on top of that.

So far, it feels like a solid game. I like it, and I think it justifies the 4,280 yen I spent on this game. More impressions later.

Eeexcellent sir. Too bad they don't make a gold paddle to match the Zelda DS Lite I scored yesterday, but it's all good. Wanna get this eventually.

Thanks much for the impressions. I posted the link to the demo and somebody wondered if the controller worked with the first DS.

I'm looking forward to getting this in the mail. Hopefully it comes before Christmas. I haven't gotten a shipment notice from Play-Asia yet and I know it takes them a week and a half at the least to get games from them.

Just loaded the rom onto my R4DS, damned fine game, uses both screens really nicely.

If you don't have the paddle you can use the stylus or the D pad, I'm just using the D pad, controls great.

I pla on picking this up when I get to japan, cause I want the black paddle controller. :drool:

You can use the D-Pad or the stylus. Just like DashK said. You can buy just the game by itself for a cheaper price, but they sell sets with the paddle controller for about 10 bucks more.

The paddle is nice, though. There's an option to control the speed of the paddle, I believe.

This game looks pretty good to me. I would want a paddle to play the game with though.

Is the multi-player single cart or does everyone need a copy of the game?

Give me some time to figure it out... I can't read Japanese very well, and I'm trying to translate the booklet.

Well, the game does have some cool features. As you play the game, you earn points to spend at the shop. At the shop, you can buy things to change the appearance of certain worlds/zones. Here's what you can change:

* Background
* Music
* Your Vaus Ship
* Border of the game frame
* The shape of the blocks (you can buy Space Invader blocks!)

From what I heard, you can post your highest scores online via Wi-Fi. Don't know if it's true, but if it is, it's definitely a challenge. For example, in "Clear Game" mode, if you die... you can continue but your points go to zero. You can imagine that you'd have to have a flawless game through many rounds to get the highest scores possible.

Also, you can choose the option of not having a barrier to begin with (the line underneath your Vaus that will keep the energy ball from going into the bottom abyss). Doing so will give you 5000 bonus points when you clear a level, compared to 1000 bonus points if you have a barrier with 3 levels, given if you do not damage the barrier before the end of the level. Keep in mind that during a "no-barrier" game, you can earn a capsule that will give you a barrier... but if you damage this barrier, you won't get any bonus points at all.

This weekend, I plan to play it even more and start collecting stuff for the game.

anyone looking to pick this title up may want to hurry. It only sold 1,000 copies it's first week in Japan, that's right, 1,000 copies!

Very, very low sales, considering there is like 10 million DS owners in Japan.

Should be discontinued instantly, and once stock dries up it's gone.

Get the paddle controller editions while you can.

Yeah ... My copy should arrive from NCSX on Thursday. I just received my confirmation email from them. I can't wait to get it. I may order a 2nd one since it looks like these wont make it to the US.

im addicted to the game, its very challenging, because you have to start from level 1 each time you play.

levels branch off after you beat a1 thru a5, you can select world B or C, then from each of those it branches off into the whole alphabete. but the kicker is, if you get to world "G" and wanna quit, you start from world A the next time.

so you basically have to run thru different paths to the end in one sitting.

once you beat the lettered worlds in 1p mode you open up the challenges for that stage in quest mode and can earn more shop points.

music is fantastic, some songs have full vocals!

If you use the stylus, can you just touch the spot on the screen under the ball and get the bar to jump there, or do you actually have to keep it in contact with the screen the whole time and drag it to move it?

you still have to slide it, it won't teleport to where you touch, it's better to just use the D pad. both move at the same speed and you don't have to get cramps in your hand holding the stylus for an hour while you play it.
