Hello,

This is a question for anyone who has Neogeousa's newest S-Video and Stereo mods. In particular, the opinion of anyone who has a system with both the old and new mods would be GREATLY appreciated.

I bought my Neo Geo system with the old mods and have been very happy with the system. However, the new mods have sparked my interest, and with the recent release of ROTD, I'm thinking about going for it this time.

If anyone can tell me if it's worth the $60 for the mods + ~$40 total shipping to and from Canada from the US, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I really dig mine. The thing I noticed most was the quality of the sound. Very, very crisp. I would say go for it!

Thanks for the input. It's still a tough decision though. How about the video? Is it significantly better? Paying ~$100 for improved sound sounds a little steep, but then again, I'm not sure how long I can stand not having the best sound & video output I can get.

If your system is already modded it is not worth it.

Have you actually compared the two types of mods side by side? If not, you're unqualified to make an accurate assessment...

Based on my personal experience with my old MAS s-video modded Neo and the new "Ultra" system I recently bought from Ray, I can say with confidence that the "ultra" s-video mod is a massive step up from anything MAS ever did. I've never seen a Kurtz S-Video mod, so I'll withold making any comparisons between his mods and the Arcade ones.

However, there's little doubt in my mind that the "Ultra" S-video mod (the ultra sound mod is kickin' too, but that's another subject) is the best Neo-Geo video "solution" currently available, albiet quite a pricey one. If you've got the video gear (nice TV) to really make a mod such as this one shine, I say go for it and don't look back. Sure, it's a hassle and a pain (in the wallet) to get it done, but the end result is well worth the effort required. I used to use "velocity modulation" on my Wega to help sharpen up the shoddy s-video my MAS modded system put out, but with the Arcade ultra mod system, the video it spits out is so clean by default that I don't even use velocity modulation any more.

I really wish it were easier to illustrate the difference between this mod and others (perhaps it could be done with a video capture card?). If more people could see just how kick-ass this mod really is, I'm sure Arcade would've performed many more than he already has. As it stands, this is one of the best kept (and best, period) secrets in getting the last drop of quality out of your Neo-Geo gaming experience.

jbeedham: Have you seen Ray's old & new mods in action? If you have, and you can still say the new mods aren't worth it, can you give me more details as to why? If you haven't seen both mods, have you at least seen the new mods and can compare them to some other mods?

DolphinLord: Thanks for the excellent input. Have you ever seen Ray's old mod? (That's what I have currently.) The S-Video looks pretty good on my Wega, but the sound seems a bit muffled on some games. (It's especially noticable on Rage of the Dragons for some reason.) I assumed it was just because that's what the Neo is capable of, but now I'm wondering.

Also, what's this velocity modulation you mentioned? I don't recall seeing that on my Wega, but then again, I wasn't really looking for it before. I'll see if I have it, turn it on, and see what I think of the picture.

All: I'm probably going to go ahead and get the mod done, but still, if there's anyone who's actually seen both mods (all the better if you have 1 system with both mods), please let me know what you think.
