"THE MOTHERSHIP"

Saw this pop up on Yahoo! just now. Evidently Steve Jobs popped up at a Cupertino City Council meeting this tuesday and announced a massive new Headquarters. They've been buying up land (including from HP who went to Mountain View) for the past 5 years.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_local...new-hi-tech-apple-headquarters?bouchon=807,ca

Heres the video: (really amazing)

See the facility about 4:45 into the video.

I was taking some notes/observations and putting them on my Facebook as I watched it. Here's what I thought:

fb5c69dafdce5cfada83e07a2783d3b3.jpeg

This is blowing my mind... a new campus that houses all 12,000 of apple's Bay Area employees... Man I'd kill to work here...

They're building a self sufficient energy "center" that will run off natural gas etc, and using it as the primary source of energy... as a BACKUP they can use the citie's power grid...wow.

They're building an enormous auditorium so they wont have to come to the moscone center for WWDC and other events in San Francisco for the big Speeches etc...

He seems rather subdued... kind of sad.. and like he's sneaking something in there... he knows he's wowing them.. But Apple ALWAYS has something up their sleeves...

I suspect he's sad because he knows he won't live to see it completed... But that's speculation... :(

Construction to begin in 2012. Completion/move in in 2015.

They're projecting 3,500 new jobs (40%+) .... He also proclaims to make the employees very "Affluent." I like the sound of that very much...

They also plan to plant a massive amounts of trees and other plants to make the campus 80% scenery.

It kind of resembles the pentagon with the enormous courtyard in the middle. But instead it's a circle a kind of new "infinite loop" Safety was brought up, and I think they would probably work very hard to make it as safe/self sufficient as the pentagon if not more...

Because it's a loop like that, you literally could walk around for infinity... I imagine it'd be kind of like the loop in 2001 but on the ground...]

Steve says Smoking is not allowed, and that both of his parents died of lung cancer, so he is sensitive to air quality...

He also said he would like to see Kaiser kicked out.. ha ha.. wow.

One of the councilmen begged for a Apple store in cupertino, and even busted out his iPad 2...

Steve threatens to go to Mountain View, if they were unable to build in here, and take the largest tax payer in cupertino away... damn Steve.. hard ball. It's pretty aggressive, you can really see what he must be like in private negotiations... Brutal...

The council is awestruck.

A councilman, a former HP employee said "Spectacular, would be an understatement."

Well wow... that was amazing... It clearly was history in the making..

I've visited the Googleplex in MountainView, and it was really amazing, and inspiring. This new Apple HQ though is clearly targeting it, and according to Steve "The best Office Building in the world."

LOL Apple fag.

Pretty much. Though, things didn't always used to be this way...

When the Intel iMacs started running windows XP, and after my first ipod on a PC,thats when I took the plunge... It's been a slippery slope since then.

It's hard not to get excited about this though...

Fuck Apples, Would you look at all that curved glass????

Personally I see no problem with their new complex. If they make it green and fairly self sufficient and employ more people (during construction and regular staff), there is no good reason for the council to turn down the facility.

I also don't blame Jobs for threatening to pack up Apple and leave the area. Thats how you get this kind of stuff done.

So Steve Jobs is building a IRL Halo? Clearly he hasn't touched any Microsoft products...

[EDIT: I love how its a surprise visit --could you imagine going to the City Council meeting for a HS civics project or to ask for a fix to a stoplight only to realize this was going to be on the agenda?]

[EDIT 2: That presentation is actually pretty well done. He struck a perfect chord with his audience, from a pubic speaking perspective he's impressive. When they show exactly how big the land they bought it is in context of a sat photo, you realize how massive this thing is.

As the UK Guardian put it:

Steve Jobs gave a masterclass in how to charm your local council planning meeting this week, personally presenting for 20 minutes on its ambitious plans for a new headquarters in Cupertino. [. . .] With a very different persona to the one we see at Apple's product announcements, Jobs was authoritative but humble, and personal enough to give anecdotes about growing up in Cupertino. He was also disturbingly thin and at times seemed breathless, and when one councillor asked on Apple's no-smoking policy he snapped: "Both my parents died from lung cancer, so i'm a little sensitive on that topic."

That is really cool. Looks skinny but nothing wrong with that per se. I want to know what brand of black long-sleeved shirts he wears.

Cupertino must have a large Asian-American community.

It looks like he was really, really inspired by his Electric Light Orchestra album covers.

I've heard they're expensive but not insanely priced (well, not as insanely priced as some brands).

Speaking of crazy prices, I remember reading an article about the hunt for the most expensive t-shirt, and the author found it almost immediately:
If you had asked me, while growing up in Upstate New York, where do the country’s most affluent shop, I would’ve quickly blurted out Beverly Hills. Years later my answer’s the same. I start at Rodeo Drive, and will be moving south, as I’ve found some free parking near the Beverly Hills sign. I quickly note the Giorgio Armani Boutique -- Mister Armani’s West Coast hub for his best and brightest threads.

A statuesque saleswoman wonders can she help me. “Take me to the boutique’s priciest men’s t-shirt.” She finds my particular curiosity unique and she guides me to a plain black t-shirt. My fingers glide over the perfectly-folded garment. They would be smiling if they could. This classic t-shirt is crafted from the sort of fine cashmere that civil wars are fought over.
Statuesque Sales Clerk: Mister Armani wears this very shirt daily.
If you’ve seen a picture this Italian Stallion, you’ve seen him in this shirt. I produce the hidden price tag and feel beginner’s luck upon me. This plain black t-shirt would fetch the royal sum of $1,850.00 plus tax.
Statuesque Sales Clerk: And here’s a light virgin wool sweater. It’s $3,000.00...
I move on. I don't want to be confused for a customer.

It's an amusing article.

Cupertino must have a large Asian-American community.

A lot of upscale Bay Area and parts of LA do.

lol

For real though, all he is showing them is pictures of it on the surface. With Trees and a park like setting.

What he is neglecting to mention is the massive droid army he is building in the complex's basement.
