Will the first Intel PowerBooks be designed by a team of ex-Sony engineers? Could be. A reliable source tells us that Apple has been “having trouble playing catch up with the learning curve for designing using the Intel platform” and that in order to have an Intel-based PowerBook out by next year they’ve been scrambling to recruit an engineering team with some experience building light and thin Intel-based laptops. And how are they going to do that? By poaching from Sony apparently, apparently they’ve hired a headhunting firm in Japan which has been trying to recruit as many current Sony VAIO and ex-Sony VAIO engineers as they can in order to have a team in place as soon as possible. Sounds a little crazy, but it wouldn’t be the first time that Apple’s turned to Sony for assistance — you might recall that they had Sony help them design the very first PowerBook way back in 1991.

I've always admired Apple and Intel's design.

I read in a book that in the 80's in Cupertino CA, Apple's first design labs were next door to Sony's and Apple technicians really liked Sony's designs, and along with the first Powerbook has been a major inspiration. (Read this in "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs)

Sounds cool to me, I love my VAIO.

I am sure that the design aspect that the ex-Sony people will be the internals, the working parts. In short, you are still probably going to have an Apple looking machine, the Sony guys won't be designing the case.

Can't wait for the damn intel Macs to come out... I need a new computer.

sony has some of the ugliest outer designs IMO (PS2, PS"X"). maybe inside they are masters...

their best designed stuff are their MD units, but companies like Sharp have better looking units to me...

I was gonna pony up for a new mac

--But--

Seeing how there will be a model change with the Intel chips coming up, I just had a buddy hunt down a G3 300 Mhz w/ OSX 3.9 Tower for me. It's not much, but it'll be enough for IMing, Internetting, doing Word Processing, iTunes, and photos. Waiting on the modem and some RAM to come into the mail. Already put an 80 gig HD in it, and will max out the ram to 1 Gig. Won't cost me more than $300. Like I said, nothing fancy, but it'll keep me going until I get a full blown mac.

Does anybody know of any good mac forums that are active?
