did a search and couldnt find any threads on this....

So how about it? Has anyone successfully swapped one of these out? I broke the top screen on my wife's DS accidentally so while I am going to buy her new DS lite I figured I would at least try to repair this one and keep it for myself. I see alot of junker DS's on ebay though from people who apparently tried (and failed) doing this replacement. That doesnt mean it is hard necessarily but maybe there are some things to be aware of while doing it?

So if anyone has any insights or advice, please post! This is for the original DS model as well, not sure actually if there is any differences in screens though.... heard something about the lite screens being brighter?

Thanks!

Well, you do have to be pretty good at taking things apart. But let me tell ya the DS is actually very intricate and fragile its not so much that its difficult taking it apart I mean they have videos on you tube and websites that show step by step instructions on how to. You are required to have a phillips screw driver and triwing screw driver.

If you ask me replacing the screens doesn't seem difficult at all, all you have to do is take everything apart which literally takes about 2 hours, you must place screws, parts rubber pads, cross pad, buttons, etc in a safe area so as not to loose them. unhinging the hinges is a bitch for first timers look at video for more info, there is a certain way it must be done or you can damage your ribbon connection.

The ribbon cable is locked into place by a black tab that snaps up & down once you get to this step everything else becomes easier. I must warn you when taking things apart be very very careful because the power switch & volume switch are very fragile and can snap off in an instant when taking the case apart.

The problem for most DS' comes when putting it back together parts that are moved wires, ribbon, connections, power source etc affect wether or not the DS system may power up next time is put all together.

If you aren't afraid to loose a DS in the process of doing it yourself it may be cheaper, however I recommend that you get it fixed at a fraction of the cost from Nintendo vs Paying full price for another DS.

thanks for the info man and glad I asked. Thanks especially for the specific warnings about particular pieces, exactly the type of info I needed so I can look out for things when Im in there.

So are the DS and DS lite screens both the same? I just want to makes sure I buy the correct stuff here.

Thanks for the help man, much appreciated. I think I will give it a shot; worst case scenario I'm out of a DS that was already broken. Will Nintendo still service them if they have been opened?
