It's too damn crowded now. Go there on a Friday or Saturday and it's almost impossible to even walk around (and even then, it wouldn't be comfortable pushing against a wave of people in a hot building). Amazing how quickly it blew up because only about 6 years ago you could buy a pass the day of the event. Now you can't get a hotel room if you try 10 minutes after they are made available.

For now I'll just hold out for a new convention that actually focuses on comics instead of trying to be a TV, movie, video games, comics, etc. convention.

I registered too late which is extra pathetic since I get in for free. The worst part is that I have to go down for a meeting, so I'll be driving all the way for that but not be able to go into the show itself. Although I agree with Eric that it's become more and more miserable each year.

Hopefully the fact I couldn't get in means they are limiting registration a lot more to combat the increasing overcrowdedness. There is no way in fuck the last 3 or 4 years were even legal, just from a fire safety perspective. The whole dang show was like a Japanese train during rush hour.

I just cant pay money for this anymore. It is too crowded and most of the dang show is not even about Comic BOOKS anymore. So annoying.

Stopped going to these a couple of years ago, mainly for the reasons some have already stated here. Though the lower focus on actual comics isn't an issue for me, since I never really cared about them. I used to go because of the anime/manga/games/etc, but the last couple of times I went was mainly for the games. And these days, I don't care about games enough to buy a pass and deal with the crowds, even though the convention center is like 15 minutes away from where I live.

The New York one is becoming like that too. I have no idea why they don't cut off the amount of people that can come in. Last year Friday was alright, but Saturday it was next to impossible to move anywhere on the main floor. It's scary because they had the whole Jacob Javits Center and I still felt like I was being shoved around. For pretty much all of the panels you had to get there an hour or 45 minutes in advance if you wanted to get in. I'm still going to try to get in as press for my website, but I still know Sunday and Saturday are going to be a madhouse.

That is just plain wrong that the creator of Dogby can't even get into comic con. Shameful.

But then again, maybe it is a blessing in disguise, considering what I've heard from this thread.

it was not so bad a few years ago , it got really bad when that vampire movie showed up then people seemed to realize more then ever that it was more then just comics. Ive gone since '01 mostly on behest of family or friends to pick up comic-con exclusive merchandise.

for buying stuff the preview night is always best not so many people .

next year the convention center will be expanded , that just probably mean they'll stuff even more people in.

Last time I went to San Diego was back in 2001, when it was still manageable.

I only go to the WonderCon in SF nowadays, and even then just for a couple of hours on a Friday. Gets too packed on Saturday. This year a buddy had exhibitor passes so cruised on that. It's shifted away from comics to: sci-fi, anime, video games, goth, tribal wear, etc.

Back when I was living in San Diego from 03 to 05, the Comic Con wasn't all that crowded at all.

When I went to one in Chicago in 2008, the only thing I really enjoyed was going around with my buddy and trying to get the artists to make homoerotic drawings for free.

last time I went to one was when I was a kid... even though I live like 20 minutes away from comic con. I thought about going last year with my gf but tickets sold out so fast I thought "what the hell? comics are that popular now?"... that being the case I give up and will never go.
on a side note, I also went to this smaller comic convention in SD off of I-8 at a place called "Scottish Rite Center". I wonder if thats still around.

I went in 2009, and I made the grave mistake of driving down to the convention center. After I was done for the day, I got lost trying to find my rental car. XD I ended up having a lot of fun, but DAMN it gets crowded. The experience will probably last me a lifetime.

I thought about planning a trip to San Diego next month, but then I realized that Comic Con was that same weekend. So I rescheduled it for September. :D

letters are a little bigger and upon closer inspection you can tell, but going in a crowd might slip by.

For anyone wanting to discover comics, the APE Con in San Francisco is a must. You'll get a much smaller audience, direct interaction with indie studios, and a chance for some original art.

Wonder-Con is about my limit right now. It gets around 30,000 fans a day as it is, and I don't think I can handle anything more. The lines for autographs or panels are four to five times longer than they were in the late 90's Image days. Most of the people are rummaging through 1/2 price TPBs that are torn to shreds or $1 overprinted Marvel crap. And I could care less about seeing a movie trailer six months ahead of schedule.

And next year, you probably won't even get that. I heard it's being moved to Anaheim at least for one year, due to some SF construction thing going on.
