You honestly don't need SteamOS on desktop (though I may give it a shot if that were to happen). The last ten or so games I've played have been on Linux either through Steam or emulation. Just enable Proton and go. It's almost as seamless as Windows these days and continues to get better. If you wanted, you could even use Big Picture mode, which would feel more like a console but still be on Linux.

It could be really handy for a more console-like experience. That was the idea when I made the little gaming PC for my living room, but due to some Linux issues I ended up just using Windows booting directly into SteamOS, which works fine but isn't as snappy as I'd like due to Windows overhead. Still, if I'm staying inside of Steam that computer doesn't need a keyboard or mouse to play games, it's pretty cool.

"Bringing the console gaming experience to PC" might be the worst slogan of all-time.

Generations! Paid exclusives (fuck you, Epic) and online play! No mods or customization! Proprietary controllers! Weak hardware!

Where do I sign up?

"Basically SteamOS with a full Linux Kernal for PC hardware driver support" isn't as catchy.

Weird they've only released videos of this thing in the dark.

No, it’s exactly what I want.
After my post, I installed Chimera on an old(ish) laptop (Ryzen 3200u. The integrated Vega 3 graphics chip supports the Vulkan API that Proton relies on for Windows compatibility). It's faithful to SteamOS Game Mode almost to a fault, displaying the Steam Deck controller orientation tips on first boot. The default desktop is more minimalistic than SteamOS.

I'm not really sure what advantage the public beta release is supposed to have for people consolising their desktops. NeoSneth had a point about Valve's capricious hardware support. If I'm not using an officially supported device by a third-party partner (Just the Legion Go S, as of this post) I'd rather trust a community-maintained distribution.

The are getting up there in age, so I doubt many exist or even function at this point. But if anyone comes across one of these weird chinese(?) mahjong handhelds, please HMU

I really want one of these as it's the only handheld PC to offer the 6 face buttons and disc d-pad on top ofc, but fuck. That's a ton of money to gamble on something where you're just completely shit out of luck if anything goes wrong with the hardware.
