What do you mean? Are you suggesting the Saturn version is better? If so, you're plain wrong. I've had both, and the PSX version is far superior. Needs to be played in Tate, though.

well that's a bit contradicting, am I plain, completely wrong, or we have to talk about Tate/normal mode differences?
I honestily never played DDP PSX on Tate mode so I cant say if pixelated or not, but I wanna believe you
on TV mode saturn version looks decent, while PSX version looks like shit
that's it

Baseley
yeah Soukyugurentay is a nice conversion as I stated, i really dont know about other titles cause I never bothered to get'em on PSX as well
but Takumaji is right, it's just about the games and if some of you guys are happy with PSX versions good for you
no need to argue

No, your post didn't really make sense when read as an answer to mine, so I didn't know what you meant. And I didn't contradict myself. I only used "plain wrong", and that's about it.

And TV mode on Saturn looks more shit than TV mode on PSX. I've compared the two versions very recently.

Some more suggestions -

Sonic Wings 2

Strikers 1945 II

R-Type Delta

About the Sat vs PSX debate, well, I'm pretty much through with that. There ARE some games that are better on Saturn but the same can be said about lots of PSX games which are way better than their Saturn counterparts. In the end, I wouldn't want to miss my PSX because there are a lot of very cool imports available for it. It's all about the games anyway.

I'm up for any of those three.

No way man, if it's on the Saturn, it's automatically better! The PS is a piece of shit, and every game on the PS is done better on the Saturn By default. Saturn is the Best system next to the Dreamcast, and we know that any Dreamcast game is always better then anything on the PS2. All those shooters on the PS2 are crap because the PS2 sucks, and the Dreamcast could do them better. Everyone should just throw out all those other shooters and play only the ones on Dreamcast and Saturn.

But really, Raystorm on the PS is indeed the version to play. :glee:

Man,you turned the sarcasm all the way up..;)

Just came back from trying out Gekirindan and Vasara in mame...

Gekirindan is one hell of a cool shmup I must say. Looks timeless, plays very well and has an interesting weapon and scoring system that I haven't quite figured out yet, but it's nice anyway. I'll definitely play this for a while, have put about two hours in it so far and it's getting better and better.

Vasara is another great game, it not only looks and feels slightly Cave-ish, it also leans towards the Samurai/martial arts theme of Guwange but only in terms of atmosphere, backgrounds and so forth, the player sprite itself and the enemies are modern-looking ships. I think this would be a very good choice of a games to focus on for a while because gameplay is great, it has lots of scoring options and the overall style should deliver to the Cave fans we have here.

about the idea i had yesterday:
i realize we will never be able to reach and agreement

but oh well

gekirindan is cool because well,it is cool

and every level is some kind of homage / parody to other shooters

just to name a few

in the first level,rayforce

fourth level IS tatsujin 2

same bg,same enemies

genius,i tell you

current personal high

856740 - stage 5

and talking about parodies

there's this nice taito shooter - gun frontier - 1990

check it out

if you like battle garegga, you wont believe your eyes...

very similar ship, identical power up system,a swarm of pink birds...

( garegga players know what i'm talking about )

thats because taito,toaplan,cave,raizing,g-rev

its always the same people in the end...sorta...

vasara 1 is alright and not very difficult

you basically keep your fire button pressed all the time for your "special weapon"

so you can destroy up to 20 enemies at once and earn loads of points

vasara 2 on the other hand...

if you think dodonpachi is difficult,DO NOT TRY vasara 2

12 stages

if you are not very good, you cant even get past level 3

that game is simply INSANE

I love Battle Garegga (and Bakraid to some extend), will give Gun Frontier a try.

Man, there are about a zillion shmups I've never played... everytime I browse through klov, I find something new. It's amazing, but also aggravating at the same time, sometimes I really can't believe the ignorancy of some companies/distributors not to release a game in Europe or the US, and be it just arcade-only, just look at all those "only released in Japan" lines in almost any game description there... not to mention the few ports these games got, we can be happy about the comparably small number of shmup ports on Sat, PSX/PS2 and DC, tho it's just a fraction of what's out there.

My Gekirindan score sucks a bit, will have to spend some more time with it before I dare to post exact figures... :)

Oh, and I test-drove Metal Black... hey hey... not bad, but the weapon system is a bit sucky, isn't it. Is there a way to stop the laser blast once fired? It always eats up the whole shot energy and leaves me with that powerless standard shot...

About the idea of focussing on one game, well, perhaps we should take a more popular one, like the Strikers 1945 II I've mentioned, or Psyvariar 2, or... I'd even be willing to focus on Guwange, and be it just to get a clue about proper scoring. my Guwange skills could be described as "lots of coins, but no points"...

I'm game.

How about you, guys?

Metal Black is not the game I remember, btw. I could swear I played it a couple of times at the 'cades but it's not the same... I clearly remember the name "Metal Black" on the cab's marquee and some backgrounds look familiar, but that's it. Perhaps it was a boot or something.

metal black is the sequel of gun frontier, btw

anyway, let me start with strikers II

should we ban the hayate ? :tickled:

anyway,here's my score

1166900 / 1-8 / hayate

this game is cursed for me

i can 1cc strikers 45 and 99

but never beaten 2

i can get to the final boss with 2,maybe even 3 lives

and i still cant beat the damn game

and i know the patterns and everything...

but nothing

if i play like shit before the final boss, then i almost kill him (it) with one life and 2 bombs

i turn into clover fucking tac when its too late :oh_no:

if i get there with 3 lives and 23982982398329 bombs,
i ALWAYS fuck it all up like you wouldnt believe

i lose 2 lives in a row without even resorting to the bombs and mad stuff like that

its so damn frustrating

i have an inp of that score i mentioned,
where i die at the last form of the damn alien thing

i think its a pretty good inp for people who never played strikers II,
as they can see many safespots and strategies

its about 100 kb or so zipped,
if you are remotely arsed

i have the game on the ss and psx2,by the way

but i play it on mame because its nice to record your own game

Cool. Yeah, send me the INP, I'm really interested in your playing style, and I guess I could need some tips for the later levels...

PM it or send it to tak@mediatrends.com, thanks.

Great score, btw.

I'm d/l'ing s1945ii as we speak. Basically, I wouldn't mind using mame but I only have a crappy Logitech Thunderpad for PC, so I'd rather play the PSX version I have with my Ascii stick... will ask a friend of mine to lend me his psx-to-PC adaptor, then I'll be set.

Tonight I'll write down my Border Down scores from the hiscore list... last one was around 30 million iirc.

Hayate is nice... the satellite special is very useful and the plane is harder to hit than others. I mostly use the Pancake, tho, that and the Focke Wulf for its cool smart bomb (the big rocket).

toaplan rules

tatsujin 2,dogyuun,batsugun,and v-five are superb games

i suppose there are too many good shooters to only choose 2 or 3 at a single time

takumaji:
will send the zipped inp later
you will also need the appropriate mame version or you wont be able to watch it for more than 20 seconds

worry not,i'll point you in the right direction :)

I vote a big NO to Border Down.

I'm also up for some Complie shooters (especially if you like thier sister team, Toaplan), but it seems that no one really digs those here. I've mentioned them before, but no love from anyone.

Musha Aleste is a go for me.

Verbatum we should get together this week for some shooter goodness, we might even be able to give my supergun a good breaking in depending on when it arrives.

Well, I'm not insisting on BD... I love to play it for score, that's why I thought it would be a good choice.

I also wouldn't really mind to focus on M.U.S.H.A., but scoring-wise it's a bit on the measly side IMO.

Toaplan rocks, man. Batsugun, Hellfire, Tatsujin/Truxton and of course the inevitable Zero Wing... ZW actually isn't all that great compared to other horizontal shmups but I love it for some reason.

Are they still around?

I think Zanac Neo might've been their last Shmup effort,if I remember correctly.

Played some Dogyuun, cant say that I like the weapon system very much unless you have 2 players joined together.

You are correct sir, and a fine shooter it is! Unfortunatly, Compile is no longer around. They game us some of the finest shooters around, and it's a shame we'll never see another Aleste or Spriggan game again. :crying:
