Kristian is known for telling everyone CAVE is the best, and
only the games he has or likes are the best.

Faggot.

Of course I'm not playing with a "million" credits now. I'm playing it with one, like I do with all the shooters I've bought and played.

It's just that it doesn't do it for me. DDP is a cool game on its own, but if you've played other Cave games it kinda fades into obscurity.

I agree. Let's all vote for the game we want to play and discuss, and let's
get it on.

Why the fuck do you say that? You know it's not true. Just because I'm willing to admit I have different preferences than most of you guys, doesn't mean I'm trying to force them down your throats.

Get a life and grow up.

No, you all were acting like bunch of fucking idiots just because I said I didn't like most horizontal shooters.

There's a difference between that and being an evil overlord forcing everyone to do what he likes and nothing else.

OK, if you consider that crying like a baby, I'm now convinced that there is absolutely no way of discussing anything with you.

Personally, I'd vote for Border Down - there're a number of good players here, and it's a game with a lot of staying power and replayability. Like Takumaji, I've been playing Border Down for quite a while now, and although I think I'm decent at the game, 1-crediting beyond Stage 5 seems really out of my grasp, and has been for a long time.

Perhaps we should discuss Stage 5 boss strategies? I'd be interested in that, certainly. A ways back in this thread, I posted a link to Randorama's writings on Border Down on the shmups.com forums. I've also got all the issues of Arcadia featuring the stage-by-stage BD strategy guide, so I could translate and post info from that if people are interested.

DDP would be interesting too - it's a great game, and if I dedicated a lot more time to it, I feel like maybe I could pull off the 1CC.

Anyway, Fran's idea is good, and it would definitely revitalize this thread.

I got "sorta far" with one credit and not much practice, so it's definitely possible. It just gets really, really, really hard on later levels. But what else can you expect from Cave :loco:

personally,

metal black - taito -
rayforce - taito -
gekirindan - taito -
vasara - visco -

are the games i'm playing the most right now :)

first of all, before starting to focus on game x or game z

it would be better to choose a specific period ( 80s,90s,post 2000 )

or a specific platform

about the titles mentioned in an earlier xtooshort post:

sengeki striker - very similar to shienryu, same company ( warashi )

not as good as shienryu,imo

but still a very solid game

its crap on mame,though

too bad they never ported it on the ss

cyvern,kaneko

( rumor has it there's also a super elusive uber rare "special" revision of the game )

easily one of the most frustrating shooters i ever played

i gave up after about 2 hours or so

still not clear to me how the system to decrease and increase the medals value work...

Fran, I'd love to focus on 80s shmups like Gaplus, Raiden (well, it's very late 80s), Slap Fight or R-Type, but I guess most ppl prefer the 90s-to-current ones or simply haven't played the old stuff enough.

On the other hand, if we take a game that everybody can play in mame, there would be no issues with availability... for ex., I don't own a PS2, so I couldn't contribute to a shmup topic about a game which is only available on this console... another reason why I've voted for Border Down because I guess most (all?) ppl who kept this thread going own a DC and the game.

In short, it would help if we'd concentrate on shmups available on mame and/or PSX, DC or SS because these are the apps/consoles most ppl have access to. Games like DP/DDP have been released on both SS and PSX so they would be worthy candidates as well.

About the games you're playing at the mo, well, I have fond memories of Metal Black... full of typical Taito stuff with all those enemy design ideas they took from Irem... Rayforce would be a very good choice, great game, would give me a good chance to thoroughly play it again. I've put more time into the 3D-ish sequel Ray Storm, tho... heh...

Rayforce would be good because it's available on SS and PSX as well (isn't it also called Layer Section?)... dunno if I got that right...

Never played Gekirindan or Vasara so far, but I've looked for some screens on klov.com and I really like what I see there. Vasara looks quite Cave-ish.

believe it or not I still dont use MAME and the only romZ I ever played ar some MSX titles never translated in english such as metal gear 2

and I've sold most of my PCBs, except, obviously, pro gear no arashi

I'd toss my vote for BD
when I first played it I was like meh.....but I've honestily been addicted for the last 2 weeks after a gradius V no stop
game is great,,,,I dont know why, maybe for the musics,
anyway if you really get into it...if you master the border system pretty well, then you cant do anything but appreciate it

I can get to stage 5 if playing ..."normal"

however ANY shmup ported on ANY console is ok for me
and what about layer section 2?? isn't it stunning as well?

LS II is just plain horrible on the Saturn, imo.

Try playing Raystorm on PSX,instead.

Same game,done better.

No way man, if it's on the Saturn, it's automatically better! The PS is a piece of shit, and every game on the PS is done better on the Saturn By default. Saturn is the Best system next to the Dreamcast, and we know that any Dreamcast game is always better then anything on the PS2. All those shooters on the PS2 are crap because the PS2 sucks, and the Dreamcast could do them better. Everyone should just throw out all those other shooters and play only the ones on Dreamcast and Saturn.

But really, Raystorm on the PS is indeed the version to play. :glee:

anyway yeah sometimes that fanboystic stuff could get annoying
I tell you what: PS2 is the console I maybe have more games on since for me is just about RPGs and shmups, the only one always hooked up to my Telly

but I dont have any problem to admit It's the crappiest piece of junk EVAR especially from a technical point of view:I mean hell It can't even handle antialiasing(or at least It can, but too hard to get into programming)
not to mention the shitty Vram it has, basically half the power of DC's

Verbs, mate, I know how much you like the Sony machine but I'd like you to admit it
if you try shikigami 2 and DoA 2 on both machine you'll notice huge graphic differences
besides....shikigami 2 on PS2 loads every time before a boss fighting while on DC works flawlessy

I never played Raystorm on PSX so I dont know, from what I remeber dodonpachi looked like shit while soukiugrentai(possible spelling mistake) was no bad
PSX gave me Xenogears, my fave videogame EVAR, so I cant possible hate it, but again......It CAN'T handle 2D as Saturn did and this's a fact
on a side note: radiant silvergun should have been made on PSX... ;)

about layer section 2
yeah, nothing special, although I used the adjective "stunning", but my english still lacks, plus yesterday nite I came back home drunk :D
but It's REALLY funny from a gameplay point of view
and It has, bar none, among the finest musics and sound effects I ever heard in a shmup

I dont like it graphically speaking, and this just confirms what said about PSX/Saturn differences, I'm pretty much sure Raystorm would look better since it's "basically" a 3D game

Some more suggestions -

Sonic Wings 2

Strikers 1945 II

R-Type Delta

About the Sat vs PSX debate, well, I'm pretty much through with that. There ARE some games that are better on Saturn but the same can be said about lots of PSX games which are way better than their Saturn counterparts. In the end, I wouldn't want to miss my PSX because there are a lot of very cool imports available for it. It's all about the games anyway.

Don't be so sure. DDP is superior on the PSX. Symphony Of The Night is as well. Forget the fact that the Saturn version has extra stuff, it should be clear to anyone that the PSX version is much better in every other aspect.

So I wouldn't call it a fact. It may be that there are loads of great 2d games on the Saturn, but it falls short with two of the best.

DDP, hell no...I honestily didnt think was same game either, with those pixelated backgrounds

Castlevania SoA IS much better on a PSX but for a simple reason:
I dont know what at konami were thinking at the time but they relied Satrun port on 3rd parts
they obviously screwed it up
Saturn port is shit not for the console itself, but just for programmers' incompetence

What do you mean? Are you suggesting the Saturn version is better? If so, you're plain wrong. I've had both, and the PSX version is far superior. Needs to be played in Tate, though.

Just my 2 cents, Ray Storm (PSX) is amonst my favourite games ever, tho I'd say perhaps its not one for Shooting pursits, it prolly more about style graphics & sound (awseome music), great game either way.

On another note I played Soukyugurentai for the first time this week, PSX version. I can't see the Saturn version being any better, seems a real good shooter, nice. For shooters, PSX and Saturn are pretty much level.
