barely messed around with Arrange mode much at all. hell, I haven't even put in too much time on Arcade mode on ESPGaluda either... I suppose I should get back to playing that sooner or later...

-bakuretsu muteki bangaioh (not really a shmup, but get it anyway. It's made by Treasure :D and it's amazing)

psyvariar 2 is gonna be released on XBOX as well but dont know what extrafeautures it'll have

I have Bangaioh on the N64, on it's original form. No inferior ports please. :D . I agree, it's fantastic. I wonder if it holds the record for "most sprites on screen, evar"?

I too wonder what the Xbox edition of Psyvariar 2: Extend Edition holds. I'd rather "support" Dreamcast, but it depends on the extras of the Xbox version... It's out in Japan October 28th.

I have Psyvariar 2 for DC since release but I'm also looking forward to the Xbox version... however, I doubt that we'll get lots of extras except for an online hiscore list.

Any news on Raiden III?

Me heap luv Raiden... specially the "rubber-band shocker" weapon in part two...

So, it's time for the legendary battle:

Pulstar or Blazing Star?

Fight!

Both games have tons of replay time. Pulstar maybe a little more, since it
takes way more practice than BS, it's harder IMO. Blazing Star is almost a
perfect shmup for me, the only thing I dislike is the god damn announcer,
really annoys me, but oh well.

In Blazing Star, last time I played my highscore was in the high 6 million,
Stage 6 is hell, it's keeping me from 1ccing this game. While
Pulstar only in the 400k range, this game still kicks my ass, I really haven't put the
practice I need into it.

On a side note, I've been playing Prehistoric Isle 2, and my score is in the 22mill.

All in 1 credit = 3 lives, MVS Level-4.

Blazing Star.

Not to say that PS is not great, I just prefer a bit more action and manic-ness in my shmups. There is alot out there like PS, but very little (horizontally) like BS.

I noticed this myself. I think that the thread is too large and intimidating for new posters and I think we lost a few from the start...

My editor sent me a debug version of the upcoming US or EU release of Gradius V.

That means I'll actually play it. For more than five minutes.

Happy now, horizontal shooter fanboys? ;)

anybody here tried the new psikyo game on the psx2?

i found nothing but a topic on shmups...

anyway,
its a great thing to have a thread dedicated to shooters

but after a while,it just gets too dispersive

guy A will pop up saying "i like this,i love that, fuck you"

guy B will do the same

and so on

yeah, you have the occasional discussion about a certain game

but what this topic really needs is some sort of competition

there are literally HUNDREDS of GODLY shooters out there

recent ones,from the 80s,90s

i am discovering a few new ones every week thanks to mame

zing zing zip,vasara,nostradamus,storm blade

just to name a few

we should choose a game or two and focus on those for a few days

strategies,scores,etc etc

just my 2 cents

Speaking of which,I'd like to pass on some savings to my Shmups bretherens.

I have extra copies of ESPGaluda (jp/w DVD) and XII Stag (KOR) for sale/trade,both are in near-mint condition and complete.

$75 takes both, shipped within the 'states.

Any takers?

Lets talk home console shooters then folks: What ones are your faves, and what is your best run on em'?

Me:

Winds of Thunder (PC Engine)

My personal fave shooter, my best is beating it on Super with one life.

Gunhed (PC Engine)

One of the games that got my into shooters, my best is beating it on one life, default difficulty.

Spriggan (PC Engine)

One of my first imports, I can beat it on normal on one life.

Musha Aleste (Mega Drive)

I can beat it on hard without loosing a life.

Axelay (SFC)

Man, I wish they would make a sequel! I can beat it on normal without loosing a life.

There's a few to get us started. How about you then?

Track record of the past four months:

M.U.S.H.A. (MD)
I have one-credited it but it took me quite a while... excellent game with nice weapon system and great graphics. My fave vert shmup on MD together with Slap Fight, Fire Shark and Raiden Trad.

Raiden Trad (MD)
3.something million, 2nd loop/level 3, only one-1cc'd it on Easy. The 1st loop of the MD version is easier than in the arcade game, but the 2nd loop makes up for that...

Raiden II (PSX)
The AI is way more clever now... I love the rubberband shocker weapon... good progress, but no 1cc so far, still working on it.

Border Down (DC)
Level 5 boss makes me lose one ship after another, and there's no way for me to cheap him out. Level 6 is insane... don't know which version I got when I entered it for the first time, but it's really very hard... Remix Mode gives me headaches as well...

DoDonPachi (PSX)
Still no 1cc so far, but I'm very close. One of my fave Cave games together with ESPra.de. The first part also rocks.

Psyvariar 2 (DC)
One-life, one-credit. Cool game, love the Buzz system. My score average decreases quite a bit when I'm trying to one-life it, tho, and I had no luck so far in one-cc'ing it with the guy (Buzz Type).

ThunderForce V - Perfect System (PSX)
One-credit? Ha. One-life? LOL! I can get to level 3 and then start dying like ducks during hunting season. Whoever thinks TF IV would be tough should give part V a try...

Good idea.

My vote goes for either DoDonPachi or Border Down.

Let's talk about DDP and how it's uninteresting, compared to DP and other Cave efforts.

Yes, I'm a huge Cave "fanboy", but DDP kinda left me dry after spending the summer playing Guwange, ESPGaluda, Donpachi and ESP RA.DE. It just didn't have "it". Sure, I've "million-credited" through it on mame once or twice, but that was at least a year ago, but when I finally got the PSX version a couple of weeks ago, I just didn't feel like I had recieved a new Cave game. It was just some sort of upgrade for Donpachi.

I went back to ESPGaluda quickly... :oh_no:

Why the negativity, DDP is a cool game. Maybe Galuda looks better, but I really enjoy it.

Yeah, it's a DP upgrade, so? Perhaps you should try to beat it with less than a million credits...

Why? Because I was disappointed in it. Disappointment = Negativity.

Of course I'm not playing with a "million" credits now. I'm playing it with one, like I do with all the shooters I've bought and played.

It's just that it doesn't do it for me. DDP is a cool game on its own, but if you've played other Cave games it kinda fades into obscurity.
