Hey guys,

It's been quite awhile since we last checked in here with a progress update on SKYCURSER and our team's quest to breathe new life into the arcade scene. Well, a lot of exciting developments have taken shape over the last few months and it seemed like time to give a personalized update to the NG squad. As you may recall, I'm not posting updates on other forums for a number of reasons, but I feel like the community here understands what we are trying to accomplish, is capable of providing useful feedback and perhaps most importantly, not afraid to call "bullshit" if we start to move off-track. Ok, enough touchy-feely, let's get on to the good stuff.

AIRFRAME: WTF is it?

NG-AiRFRAME.png

To support SKYCURSER, we knew we needed to create a hardware solution that was affordable, durable and 100% JAMMA. However at the same time, we wanted something that was flexible enough to support not only all of our team's future games, but the entire indie arcade community if possible.

Enter AIFRAME Arcade Operating System, a Linux-based hardware unit that provides a platform designed to run any game published to Linux on arcade cabinets that are outfitted with standard JAMMA wiring. With AIRFRAME, games can be easily updated or completely changed via a USB stick. The software and OS is "baked" into each USB drive, allowing for flexibility on button layout and screen resolution (support up to 1080p) along with anti-piracy at the physical and software level. AIRFRAME is not a traditional PCB solution, because we knew the community couldn't possibly support a 3-4k price point and we would lose the flexibility or ease of development we have today.

Last month, we finished the prototype design and I must say, it was an emotional experience for the whole team. Again, this hardware is still in the prototype phase and we still have tons of visual design, cost and efficiency improvements to make. Here is some media to check out:

Reception from Arcadeheroes.com:
"The possibility that Airframe could be the West's NESiCAxLIVe platform is quite enticing as this would fulfill a need that I think has long been asked for" http://bit.ly/1MLfrRN

SKYCURSER Updates

Based on the promise of the game and the AIRFRAME platform, a very early build of SKYCURSER that includes the game's first two stages has been purchased by the following arcades. Content updates will come via USB.

Galloping Ghost: 9415 Ogden Ave, Brookfield, IL 60513
(Self-proclaimed largest arcade in the world)

The Game Grid Arcade: 3601 Constitution Blvd c128, West Valley City, UT 84119
(Owned and operated by current owner of arcadeheroes.com)

Logan Arcade: 2410 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
(A beautiful location featuring other indie arcade games like Killer Queen)

Union Jack Pub: 924 Broad Ripple Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220
(Our first hometown location)

The fact that we have gained such strong support so quickly from veterans in the industry has been hugely motivating and humbling, to say the least. Anyhow, here's some visual goodies for those of you who are interested in game progress:

You will most likely notice that a lot of visual updates have happened since the last time I shared. Most notably the player ship is much smaller and better designed than previous builds.

Well, that covers the high-level stuff. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions!

I am personally excited about this hardware and I'm sure you've been bombarded with this question several times, but what kind of price point are you guys shooting for and will there be a possibility of a consumer purchase?

No worries, we haven't publicly talked price because we don't yet know how low we can get it. Right now we are well under 1k US for complete conversion kits.

Right now, we are only offering to arcade operators because the unit honestly isn't ready for home use. We are currently investing several thousand dollars into FCC approval and various other boring-but-necessary processes. Our aim is to have home-use builds ready by Q1 2016.

Groovy, I'd like a Skycurser and possible future games for my cabs :D

Very exciting news. A new dev platform for the arcade that can be priced appropriately for indie development is reason for cheer.

Thank you dude. We've been grinding hard since MGC, lots of late/sleepless nights working on it after working our day jobs. But the early response from arcades and the scene has definitely made it worthwhile.

This is great. The airframe platform seems like ingenious solution, and makes me hopeful that other developers will want to make games for it.

Wow, that's some very ambitious aim. But the earlier the better for us :) I'm really excited about Skycurser and this project in general since it looks very promising! I'll be happy to support you guys once you have the home-use builds ready. Will they have a different design, more of a console with USB pad support or JAMMA only? (I'm fine with both, just asking)

Thanks man! Right now, we plan on keeping it 100% JAMMA, at least for the foreseeable future.

Also, if you guys know of any talented devs that might want to work on an arcade format. Send them my way!

The true promise of this project will come to fruition once we have other devs releasing great games. It will make the initial hardware cost much more palatable and our effort to design the platform worthwhile.

I somehow get the notion one of the upcoming devs could be NG.DEV since they plan to switch on a new arcade hardware in 2016... but maybe that's just me. Anyhow, good luck guys!

I'd love to have a finished version ready for MGC next year, but regardless, we will definitely be there with the game!

I might have to make a trip up to Logan for this one. Give me an excuse to visit some Chicago peeps that just moved there.

There is so much right with all of this :-) amazing how you were able to take a scratch idea, and turn it into a viable real world solution. It's humbling how you were able to do this and not need to ask the community for a ton of money on kick starter or go fund me either with some vapor ware made out of a plastic shell....

Best of luck with everything and keep the details coming!

Thanks dude. That definitely means a lot, especially the no Kickstarter thing. As you can probably imagine, none of this has been particularly cheap or easy. But I've never been very keen on asking people for money before you have something real to show.

Hopefully this will become sustainable, just enough to allow us to continue to make games. I've got soooo many cool ideas for future games! The whole team loves shmups but we want to do something more ambitious for our next title. Probably a full-featured run and gun. Definitely two player as well.

That's exactly what I was hoping you would say! A run and gun would be awesome, honestly one of my favorites was always sunset riders and Cowboys of moo Mesa not because of the theme but because of the multiplayer mode. I mean a 4 player contra/metal slug game would be quite epic... But 2 player will be great too ;-)
