Tonk's post in the "Who runs the Neo Store" thread really hit home with me. I've owned most every Neo system (4 AES decks, 3 Neo CDs, 2 CDZ, 2 NGPCs and 1 6 Slot MVS cab) over the years and numerous games for each. The problem was I was stockpiling games but not playing them. Even when I had my cab I'd have all 6 slots loaded up with great game that would hardly get played. It was always about the chase. Tracking down that elusive usually overpriced game just so I'd have one more spine to jerk it to. Collecting really burned out the love I had for SNK and the Neo. I used to love Metal Slug and MOTW and all the other perennial Neo classics but my collecting fanatacism turned it all into an ugly obsession.

After I got rid of my last AES collection I started play some Neo roms on my xbox every now and then. Pretty soon I was playing every day and actually enjoying it like I did when I first got into it. I forgot how much I loved Neo Turf Masters and Kizuna Encounter and the Metal Slugs. Then my xbox went down so I went out and bought all the PS2 anthology collections and I've been playing the shit out of those. Once it stopped being about collecting it started to be fun again. For the first time in years I am a full fledged neo enthusiast!

I'm rambling now and this post is dangerously close to Merc territory.

Anyway, I was glad to see that there were other guys out there that felt the way I did. I'm going to have to get a decent CMVS setup and some nasty looking MVS carts so I can full on get back in the saddle again. In the mean time the PS2 collections are going to have to hold me over.

I'm off to play some Metal Slug.

Thanks Tonk.

Sweet! Kinda makes me rethink my recent cart-buying frenzy.

But then again, I've never played many Neo games at all, except for the ones I already have on my cab... and I want to try more.

Anyhow, rediscovering the Neo can be plenty of fun; after not playing mine from about 2004-2009, I'm in love all over again. All it took was walking down to the basement, and firing up the cab, just to find Garou and Shock Troopers 2nd Squad in there. :)

When I first got back into the Neo a few years ago it was about collecting as many carts as I could and having shockboxes. A few months ago I sold off almost all my kits except the Slugs and their respective shockboxes. Now I'm down to just quality titles that I actually enjoy playing. There's no sense spending money on a bunch of crap that'll just sit on a shelf.

Thats what I've been trying to do.

Get the real people back that made this site.

I had to take a break.

I've been a Neo fan since it came out and I played my first round of Magician Lord.

After I went through my mid-late teens, I had some more free time... I remember reading an issue of Game Informer and seeing Magician Lord in the back.

I ran up to my closet and unpacked my home system, Magician Lord, Blues Journey, Fatal Fury and Top Players Golf...

Then I found this site and all hell broke loose.

I bought at least $25-30k worth of stuff.

It wasn't worth it.

I had a shelf of games - and I never played them.

I was too fucking scared of scratching them.

I had to get rid of them.

I bought and collected an entire CD collection - when I was done, I realized it was a terrible decision and sold it.

Then I was left with my AES, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug X, LB1, 2, Sam Sho 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Force bought my MINT JPN AES system and that was the last of it...

Only game I kept was my Sam Sho 2, factory sealed. (You can't give that up)

So I took a 5 year break.

Played ROMs...

Toyed around with the idea of getting back in.

Then the bug came back.

The kind of bug that said - "You deserve the real thing - why deny yourself what you love?"

I've actually enjoyed the games.

I have my little girl to play them with me.

And she is fascinated by the games.

When my cousin stopped by the other day, he saw the CMVS on my table... "So, you are back into the Neo Geo?"

My brother in law couldnt wait to get over and play Windjammers...

And my other buddy and I used to play Baseball Stars 2 all the time back in the day...

I say the real people take this forum back from these fucking morons.

Lets make it real again.

And its great to see you around!

I'm really looking forward to getting a CMVS. There's something about playing these games with an actual joystick and 4 buttons that the roms just can't match. It feels just feels right.

Can't wait to pick up Magical Drop 2, Kizuna and KOF '95 again.

It's good to be back.

I may be too much of an asshat n00bclown to be a real person, but I love the Neo.... I just wish there was more competition, in the form of more people who loved Neo games locally. I have to say, though, I've been doing my part; while I was in Spain, I found a Polish dude who loved SSV, and played plenty of that and SSVS and Blazing Star; I also got my roomies into SVC Chaos, Baseball Stars 2, Bust A Move, and some others. I got my girlfriend, who loves SNES, into Samurai Showdown games, Garou, Puzzle de Pon, and a handful of others. She's actually almost as excited as I am for my Nightmare in the Dark cart to arrive. Last time I had a bunch of people over drinking, I had Puzzle de Pon in the cab, and most of us ended up playing a little semi-tournament; it was great fun.

I dunno what the point was here. But I love the Neo, and I love a lot of the games for it. yeah, there are some crappy ones, but there are plenty of great ones that still stand as fantastic games. I'm just glad I rediscovered it; I was getting tired of a lot of the kind of stuff that's coming out for Xbox.

lol. I'm assuming you're kidding.

I meant 360... But honestly, PS3 is the first system that's come out that I don't really feel any compulsion to buy. I've traded off my PSP. I'm glad to hear the next generation of systems seems to be coming slower than originally expected, because I'd now rather buy a few more games for a current system than have to update to something "superior" already.

Anyhow, I'm finding more joy in some older fighting games, puzzlers, and straightforward action games and beat 'em ups than in most of what's coming out now.... It's just good to see i'm not the only one. :)

This is the whole reason I'm in the Neo scene. To play the good old games. I have all the MVS titles I want now, except MS3. I play SamSho 2 and Metal Slug and Last Blade nearly every weekend on my CMVS. The only really recent game I have had any serious fun with is Cortex Command, but that's because it's supposed to be old school.

Broke out the putt master and shot 18 holes in Arizona. Finished 6+ which is a hell of a lot better than I thought I would. There seems to be a slight delay on the PS2 controller 'cause I used to be able to hit great shots at will on my cab.

I don't think there is anything wrong with collecting for its own sake if someone enjoys it. Just keep in mind that you might as well be collecting stamps as Neo games at that point. ;)

Personally, while I do waste money on rare titles, I have never purchased a game I didn't want pretty badly from a gameplay perspective, as opposed to wanting it just cause it was collectible. I can't imagine buying a game I don't want to play. It just so happens that the games I want to play...are the same titles that everyone else also wants. So I end up spending a bundle anyway. Oh well.

I will never be one of those guys with every game though. That would just not compute with me. Bad games are bad games, no matter what system they are on.

NEO GEOS
Episode IV

It is a period of civil war. Rebel Neo Geo lovers have won their first victory against the evil COLLECTOR'S EMPIRE.

During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal plans to the empires ultimate weapon, the KPJ6000, an armored soldering station with enough power to convert hundreds of games without need for cleaning.

etc etc

Our sad devotion to the ancient religion of SNK may not conjure up the stolen weapon plans.

But it will give us some nifty Ebay mind tricks.
You will forget to bid on that item at midnight.

I disagree. By keeping a game sealed or otherwise unplayed, a (lol) so-called collector is driving up prices and robbing someone else of the opportunity to play a video game.

I can't support a hobby that is in direct conflict with mine: playing video games.

Furthermore, it's a laughable concept; if you love video games, play them and get good at them! Set a world-record calibur high score! That's more spiritually satisfying, too. It feels good to buy a rare game (especially for a good price) but after I got my first 1cc I felt like a king.

Just keep in mind that you might as well be collecting stamps as Neo games at that point. ;)

Yes, and there are so many superior hobbies if all you want to do is look at your collection: sculpture, painting, etc. The only reason to buy, say, a sealed copy of earthbound is to impress nerds--nerds who would be more impressed by actual skill.

I went through the same thing, I collected kits. I had a ton of kits, lining bookshelves in my bedroom. I had a good number of machines, but I'd only really play a few games here and there, just leaving my kits sitting around.

I sold all the kits, used the money to make a real nice arcade room. And bought back all of the games in loose cart form.

Now I'm actually playing the games, I forgot how much I loved shock troopers. Collecting can be fun, but nowhere near as enjoyable as actually playing the damn things. Breakers Revenge was another one I kept forgetting about, that game is awesome for a blatant Street Fighter clone.

Heh, ok, now I understand where you're coming from a bit more. I don't think the two are incompatible tho. I collect games, including mvs (and for a short time aes), but I play them too :)

Ive had some of the same issues, collecting games and never getting near beating one by the time another is being delivered. I have since reeled it WAY in (half because I lost my job 6 months ago) and started playing all the backlog I have game wise.

I used to love skiing. I ski'd over 100 days a year, then when I was 18 I became a ski filmmaker. I did this for six years till I finally gave up.

I turned a hobby into work/obsession, and now I still look at my skis in my house, and just get in a bad mood.

I turned something I loved into something I hated, just by going from 'enjoyment' mode to 'worry/stress/plan/travel/money' mode.

So thats why I scaled back my game buying. I dont want to hate everything I own years from now

But my AES / NGCD get almost daily play. Currently playing Last Hope on the cd system, and I am loving it

This sounds exactly like me, but it is very hard to define the fine line between being a collector and a gamer, so be careful.

When I came to the realization that collecting was taking over my life, I wanted to purge EVERYTHING! and I had started to in fact, I sold hundreds of games all ready. But then I came to a point where I actually missed playing games that I got rid of. The gamer was coming back.

I am still slowly selling games that I collected that I bought for stupid reasons, like to complete a series of a game, remakes of games I allready owned (I had 4 different versions of Chrono Trigger for Gods sake) or if it had a character from a series that I collected, rarity etc. and I am using the funds to re-buy the games I really enjoyed.

I still find myself being nit picky about condition though and I want to slap myself for that, but I think I am getting better at it.

So my aim is to have a decent game "library" and not a "collection".
There is nothing wrong with collecting, but it can consume you, you end up spending more time on Ebay buying games than actually playing them.
So be careful and I am glad to see someone come to the same reality as I have.

Don't blame yourself for liking nice condition games. That's perfectly normal. I would always like playing nice clean ones over dirty scummy ones. But not if it's going to break the bank. Dirt can be removed, artwork reproduced, and damaged components repaired. And putting actual time in with it is good fun (for a techie like me)

And the same for me, having a library is the idea. I have my Neo with 8 games right now and a NES with some games, a PS1 which I keep for the Guncon games, and an NGPC for the road. So whenever I host a get together I can bring out a selection of the best. And I play them myself on the weekends too.

When I first got into gaming (i was 12 at the time) my Dad told me to never buy another game until I had played the first one for at least 2 months or until I felt I had gotten all I could from it. Now I haven't always followed that rule, but one game every 2 months works well in general. I get to sit back and enjoy the game, maybe even critique it a bit, and save money. I never spend more than $40 at a time unless I go for more than a 2 months at a time. Keeps it more sane, and more fun.

And my other buddy and I used to play Baseball Stars 2 all the time back in the day

That's what I'm talking about. I remember chilling out in my room with my buddy playing bbs2 like it was going out of style. The Neo still has such an appeal to me, but not with home carts, BUT THE GAMES THEMSELVES. I'm so over getting a mint last blade home cart and being worried the raised SNK letters inside the snap case are going to scratch it. Fuck it, just play the damn thing.

You don't need to use ROMs to enjoy the Neo. All of this buying and selling it back off because you changed your mind is stupid. Just get what you want and play it. If you go through a period of dissatisfaction with your collections, just hold on to them. It's easy to tell the good games from the bad, and the good games are always worth keeping around.

I'm lucky to have a supergun since my next CMVS is still under construction. At least I can still get my Neo using my SG and extra mobo.
