You forget I worked for Midway for two years. One of my supervisors early on was on both the SNES and N64 DOOM projects. As DOOM had been a years long obsession that I was actively playing still then thanks to the DOOM Legacy project I asked him about stuff about both games. I know you can take it with a grain of salt as I can't obvious prove a conversation from 15 years ago but that's what I was told. The chip they went with to cut corners on costs was loaded up so much full of data they hadn't the room for the added code and textures for the missing monster views, monster aggression/shots against each other, ceiling and floor textures, and a few other little omissions from the game. It was a crime they did it, it could have been one of the most superior console versions for years from when it arrived. :(

Doom was a 16mbit game, the biggest ROM size supported by the SFX2 chip. How would the supposed "extra 2mbit" been possible? Your story doesn't add up.

I'm gonna need bulbousbeard to fact-check this.

Would own both gladly. I think I would lean more towards the Jag to be honest as it has more games that interest me...not too fucking many but yeah

Yes you did. Most PC's were in the $1500-$2000 range, which is like $2500-$4000 in today's money.

The only reason I was able to finally buy a PC in 1996 was because my family won a small settlement. Before that my family never could have afforded it.

P.S. - I'd buy a 3DO today for Gex and those delicious ports of Wolfenstein 3D, Road Rash, Rayman, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and Samurai Shodown. Jag? No fuckin' way.

What a great time to get a PC. Our family got a PC in 98 which was right in the middle of the golden age of PC gaming. Intel Pentium 1 baby!

I always wanted to try out one of these systems. A friend had a 3DO but it was messed up and never got to try it. We tried to get it working several times never would power on.

I own both but favor the Jaguar just a little bit more. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but Doom on the Jaguar is allot better then the 3DO version.

Can't say I'm really interested in either system but I do like the simplistic design of the Panasonic FZ-10. The Sanyo TRY is kinda funky too.

And I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't find the Jaguar/Jag CD combo as much of an eyesore as people make it out to be... it's not the greatest design ever but it does look quite cool. As far as the controller goes, I think it was a good idea, just executed very poorly. I'm sure they would have liked to use a touch screen LCD, but the costs wouldn't have made it feasible at the time. So you were left with a keypad and flimsy overlays. Good idea, but too early to do it properly and make it work.

The Jaguar also seems to have a much more active homebrew scene than the 3DO too.

Not at all. How many people have played at least 10 Jag games?

I've played at least 2 dozen Jaguar cartridge & CD games. I picked a bunch up for a steal from Video Game Liquidator's in the early 2000's.

Disclosure: I do not own a Jaguar today.

I had a bit of a giggle when i found out a couple of years back that a company called imagin systems had purchased the moulding plates of the jaguar's casing, and after minor mods had used it to house they're hotrod dental camera.

I'd have literally pissed myself laughing if my local dentist had tried to use the old hotrod on me.

That was a better fate for those molds than their next stop was. Thankfully, I believe that the molds now belong to AtariAge.

I bet plenty of people have used the old hotrod on you.

Spoiler alert, cat.

OMG I LOVED DOOM LEGACY

Still around, still amazing and last updated just 3 weeks ago -- https://sourceforge.net/projects/doomlegacy/

Also worth a peek, the one good way to enjoy the N64 DOOM since you won't get eye damage trying to deal with the darkness problems. https://doom64ex.wordpress.com/ (These are the same guys who did the Turok and Strife updates that are up for sale on GoG.com currently.) Just download DOOM64EX, feel the exe file your N64 rom, it gets the needed data, and you have a windows executable version of the game with keyboard+mouse support and more. Lots of fun.

A touchscreen LCD wouldn't have even fit into a controller during that time.

And would've cost more than the whole system. It's obvious the Jag was built cheaply: shitty RF encoder, no 1 cent diode to prevent a reverse polarity PSU from blowing out the regulator, cheap plastic, shitty contouring around the ports on the front and back...

At least the jag did have scart cables made for it. Don't know if that would matter back then. 24 bit color would still have looked horrid

Can you tell me if a 3DO prototype of Mortal Kombat 2 or 3 existed?

3DO all the way. People who talk shit about the 3DO "like the Sega CD" didn't have one in the early 90's or was not even alive. And if I wanted to play Tempest 2000 I would just buy the Saturn version.

The Saturn version of Tempest 2000 is missing a bonus level and the sound is a bit wonky. The Jag version is the best. Jeff Minter himself says as much.

The PS1 version is the worst though.

Jag version > DOS version > Saturn version >>>> PS1 version

Once I went to ZDoom and then GZDoom I never bothered with anything else.

Good looks, nonetheless. Thank you.

You can also set it up to work with an xinput controller and add it as a non-Steam game and run it in big picture mode. It's very well done.

Toss up, but I think I liked the jag more. Liked the games more, controllers more and cartridge's, o yea. Plus bonus if the cd attachment which was mediocre at best.

I do feel the 3do had a nicer layout. The games looked better to me.

No idea, I stopped caring long ago. To be fair I can't stand MK at all beyond the first two. I never much enjoyed the block button, but once it got all hyper bitch slappy and with the run button 3 I walked away. :)

As to the 2 DOOM comments, no I hadn't any idea you could do that with Steam as I rarely use it (#1 for me is GoG if they share a release) and Z/GZDOOm they're solid. I went with GZDoom and honestly I was still surprised that Legacy has a community with it.

Keep in mind this was the dark ages of 32bit game design. The slew of crap games weren't necessarily platform limitation as it was just a bad era of game design.

I wonder what would have happened if matsushita had released the 3DO M2 instead of getting cold feet about going up against sony and nintendo and pulling the plug on it.
It must have been very close to getting a release.
It was shown and demo'd at the 1996 E3.

That was the first iteration of D2, wasnt it?
