As I've always been into collecting Jap carts, you do sometimes miss out on a few descriptive things in the manual....

So a few Metal Slug questions that perhaps some of you could answer...

1) What is with the baby in Metal Slug 2/X on the first stage?

2) What's the story with the baboon in MS 2/X?

3) What actually happened in level 2 of Slug 3?

4) What's with the guy in the glasses and suit in Slug 3?

5) What is the story with the little monkey with the uzi?

6) Finally (now I used to konow this but forgot) what is the name of the big bloke with machine gun that you meet in all the Slugs? (y'know he gets eaten by a whale in 2/X)

What's the general story line of 3 supposed to be as well?

Bump....

20 years later... did @kernow ever get his SLK and MS3? Does he now "spray coin" on AES games???

But more importantly... does anyone know the max number of hostages per stage for MS1 & MS2? I'm pretty sure I know where they all are, but also can't help but think I'm missing some.

Like the Hong Kong stage in MS2 - how many times will the game keep dropping hostages from the sky when you fight the boss? I've gone into that fight with 12 hostages and the game has dropped at least one more hostage randomly... same thing happens in Stage 3 when they randomly walk on.

Oh noes, I missed this thread by 9 months first time round. I’m such a n00b.

In reflection Tarma, is 4 still the weakest of the series?

I’d say 6 is worse, or at least less fun.

4 was a bit of a hodgepodge of stolen elements from the early games. 6 tried to do things a bit differently but it blows.

I'm not a fan of 6, while it tries to breathe some new life back into the series the gameplay is just getting tired at this point, and it just doesn't offer anything new enough to warrant serious attention imo.

Add in the fact that the graphical charm of the early entries is pretty much gone then, no I won't recommend it, but I wouldn't say it was the worst.

That honour remains with MS4. It's just a big fat lazy turd of a game.

There's nothing new with the gameplay, so it gets tiring quickly, what features are there feel like they've been thrown at the game in a "something will stick" way. Monkey mode is amusing for all of ten seconds, then you realize that they've just robbed the monkey sidekick from MS3 and just subbed him in.

I don't like the music... gone are the signature tunes of Hiya! which are very much part of the experience of the early games, especially the "Assault Theme".

In isolation it's a mediocre run 'n' gun that I'm sure die hards of the genre will enjoy for five minutes. As a sequel within a beloved franchise it is beyond awful... it is the Phantom Menace of the series.

MS4 was a total cash grab, and if I never, ever, play it again it will be too soon.

I agree with you on 6, but I'm more forgiving on 4. I'm known for being the one person in the world who likes 4, but then again I'm not the biggest Metal Slug fan anyway.

I dare say MS4 has its fans, just as I'm sure such gems as Kasumi Ninja and Rise of the Robots do.

MS4 is just a cynical mess of a game. They should have stopped at 3, because even when they did try to do it again properly they screwed up - i.e. MS5.

Offt that’s a bit harsh.

I find 4 very unoriginal and is clearly a palette swap cash grab. But, on the basis of it being very close (for lazy reasons) to 1 and 2, I find it much more enjoyable than 6. 6 is a failed experiment to me that went too far off the original blueprint.

I could see myself playing 4 again sometime, 6 no chance.

But it’s interesting to hear different views.

Not sure whether I'd play 4 or 6 given the choice... I see where you're coming from... I guess 4 just disappoints on so many levels, whereas 6 is just a disappointment, because by that stage we knew the magic was gone.
