Index will probably sell off their assets and a company like GungHo could swoop in and get them. I hope they don't sell of properties one by one and can keep the core teams together.

Definitely don't like to see something like this...especially only a few weeks before Shin Megami Tensei IV is supposed to come out.

This process isn't going to happen overnight. Don't worry about the games you are looking forward to. They are still coming.

Yeah, Atlus said as much themselves.

I'm hoping for the best. I buy nearly everything they make/publish and appreciate not only the quality of the games, but it's the extras that really make each release special. Hell, I buy 2 of almost everything they put out in trying to support what they do.

The industry needs companies like Atlus, so I really hope they don't go the way of Working Designs...

Sad news indeed. And Working Designs was never accused of fraud. This is Enron level shit.

Atlus is an incredibly old company with tons of clout. Let's hope a nice Japanese company decides to merge with them.

No working design was just fucked over by Sony & managed badly into the ground by Ireland .

At least nobody died from this video game scandal.

Not yet, anyways...
This is Japan, and the scandal is still fresh; I foresee one or more exec forcing some poor Japan Railways employees to clean up a nasty mess in the near future...

We finally have an answer....

http://kotaku.com/atlus-is-becoming-part-of-sega-1338653981

Report: Atlus Is Becoming Part of Sega [Update]

Atlus will soon be a Sega brand, reports Japan's Nikkei.

The Japanese news source reports that there have been substantial steps forward for Index Corporation (Atlus' parent company) to transfer management control over to Sega Sammy Holdings (Sega's parent company).

This comes as Sega will formally purchase Index for 14 billion yen (US$141 million), and Index's game business is being reorganized under Sega.

Last August, there were reports that Sega was among twenty companies bidding for Index, which was going through financial proceedings. This summer, Atlus said its brand would carry on and was "unaffected" by the financial troubles.

Update: Sega Sammy Holdings has issued a statement regarding the Nikkei story via Inside, stating, "Today, according to a media outlet, there is a report that our company is taking over Index's operations. However, this is not an announcement our company made."

Update 2: Sega has now confirmed the purchase. Please be gentle with the Persona series.

At least it wasn't Nintendo or even Capcom. Square-Enix probably would have been the best fit. Sega must have been swimming in money from the Pachinko business to make the purchase. Here's some of the scenarios:

For Atlus USA the following things that could happen -

1. Atlus USA close. All games are now release by Sega USA.
2. Atlus USA and Sega merge. That could affect which game get localized due to change in management.
3. Sega USA close and Atlus USA stay open. Unlikely since Atlus USA is smaller.
4. Sega keep both Atlus USA and Sega USA. Unlikely due to redundancy.

No matter how you look at it, it is very unlikely things will stay the same.

Actually there is one positive thing: Sega actually has offices in Europe for publishing games here, Atlus themselves never had any so they always had to take another publisher (Koei, Ghostlight etc.) which resulted in less games over here.

It's positive if Sega continues the same business model for Atlus, which is unlikely. Sega has the business sense of a 5 year old.

Looks like the chances of getting a Princess Crown 2 just shot way up, from "impossible" to "highly unlikely".
