Ahhhh, Fatal Fury. The franchise has come a long way since 1991. Lots of changes and new faces. For Saturn owners, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special was the last up-to-date FF game released onto the system. This is the baby hopefully Saturn owners can be content with....

Graphics-93/100

I really, really dig the graphics. The colors are vibrant and loud. For example, setting someone on fire is eye-candy. Pause the game when someone is on fire-- and the fire moves during the Pause screen! That's pretty damn cool. Characters look great, everyone from the busty Mai to the large Wolfgang Krauser. There aren't individual backgrounds, but the ones that are present, are decent. Wolfgang's stage I particularly liked.

Sound/Music-87/100

Voices were clear and the music is solid. Everything from "Burning Knuckle!!" to "I'll chisel your gravestone, sleep well!!" is accurately presented in the game. Sound effects were good, especially the various SDM. Don't forget about that wacky announcer...

Gameplay-89/100

If you're used to 4 and 6 button fighters, RBS will take some time to get use to. There are only 3 buttons, but you seemingly don't care after playing for a while. This time around, there are no ring-outs. But there is a feature where if you get knocked silly off the barriers at the far corners of a stage, you will see stars. This game has a practice mode as well, it comes in very handy.

Replay-90/100

20 characters to select from and plenty of combos to be discovered. This game is still solid after all these years.

Overall-90/100

Not a bad port, really. The loading is not nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. I haven't played RB or FF3 on the Saturn yet, but I can say this... RBFFS is a solid Saturn title. Give it a shot, especially if the Saturn is all you got.
