Mainstream gaming is killing off good games!

Flipping through the channels and G4TV's Filter is on counting down The Worst Games of All Time. I thought it would be interesting a bit, but when they came down to the final 3 games, 3) Zero Wing, 2) Shenmue and 1) I forget because I was so pissed about the previous two. Zero Wing, okay crappy/hilarious translation, but not a bad game. Now, Shenmue, 2nd worst of all time. Worst than ET, Superman 64? WTF!!!! They had those "interviews" with gamers and they were all like Shenmue "was so bad, and never should have been made!"

It just goes to show that a majority of gaming is going down the shitter and hardcore gaming is getting phased out. I'll forever hold on to my Dreamcast and NEO GEO :buttrock:

EDIT: Check out www.mega64.com for a Wayne's World like video game show. Its pretty hilarious.

Man gaming for the most part sucks donkey balls these days, so this isn't anything new. The Industry overall is about as corrupt as real life Politics, but every now and then something will come along in the 3-D realm that makes even me reach for the Astro Glide... and I don't mean DOA XVB either.

...but I'm 90% Neo Head anyhow so it don't matter.

Yeah your right, I've been out of mainstream gaming for the good part of a year. Still got Crimson Skies and Prince of Persia, and will get Ninja Gaiden soon, but I haven't really laid foot into an EB or Gamestop in a long time.

I'm just gonna stick to my NEO GEO, PC Engine, and Dreamcast.

Eh, it actually doesn't bother me. All it means is that I'll finally have time to catch up on all the great NES, SNES, Genesis, PC-Engine, Neo Geo, Dreamcast, Saturn and PSOne games I've never had time to play.

Seriously though, I don't own an Xbox and I've played through about 4 Gamecube games I like. I do have about 35 PS2 games, but most of the ones I play are either collections, remixes or 2D games, the rest I've only gone partway through. About the only "mainstream" games I play these days are First-Person PC shooters.

So, like I said, I think my backlog of older games is enough to last me quite a while.

Yep, it's evident when a horrid spinoff of fallout (Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel) could make it out, but they cancel the sequel to the main series(Fallout 3) . It's ridiculous.

Yes. So fucking sad, that they ditch their userbase in favor of the lameasses who can't play for more than 2 mins. I was so looking forward to fallout 3 (van buren). I cannot believe these idiots think Shenmue is one of the worst games ever. Unbelievable imbeciles.

I couldn't agree more. Canceling fallout 3 was a fucking shame indeed. Fallout is simply one of the best rpg series i've ever had the pleasure to day. I simply haven't played another game that had such a dark, gritty atmosphere. The whole retro-future thing is just so great. A shame indeed.

Shenmue was by no means perfect, but worst ever? Ummm, OK.
If anything, the game was just guilty of trying to do too much, aside from the sorry-ass English dub. Try the aformentioned Superman for N64, or Fantastic Four, or Shrek for Christ's sake.

Then again, I imagine the average hardcore NG.com person has forgotten more about gaming than most casual gamers will ever know. Sad but true...even the retarded ones like DashK.

I don't know whats more frightening:

The fact that G4 considered Shenmue to be the second worst game ever,

or:

The fact that more and more people are forming opinions about games based on watching G4.

My only hope is that the massive bloated carcass of mainstream games becomes too cumbersome to support itself and collapses.

Hopefully then, games will go back underground and serious gamers will again hold some sway in the industry.

but I doubt that will happen, unless Sony and Microsoft miraculously "run out of money".

Oh well (goes back to playing the Neo)

You have to understand that the gaming industry is targeting the youth of america.

It is true that a portion of their target is the populus that got into gaming when it was just starting out, but MOST of the video gaming industry is targeted towards those of you(and you know who you are) who only like games that 'look good.'

It's really sad, and i hate to say it. My cousin once said to me, 'My gameboy is better than your's.' I then said, 'Son, you meen to tell me that you think color makes these games better?'

When I was young, I liked graphics too. I remember playing games with a friend of mine, and being dazzled by the insane 2D graphics of SNES games, and even the occasional Genesis game.

I never thought 2D was a taste all its own.

I just can't feel the same way about a 3D environment....it just feels 'floaty.'

The gaming industry needs a wake-up call.

EDIT - oh yeah, and another thing....

we are all guilty of this too. you can't deny it. SLAP A 2 OR A 3 ON A GAME AND WE'LL EAT IT UP LIKE CANDY.

Trying to shift from 2D to 3D...that was hell....wouldn't touch Virtua Fighter for a LONG time...too weird...especially for the first time, the fighters would not turn around for you (Like most 2D fighters do for you) So it was a strange change of pace for me (some may agree) during 95'

Yes anything with a "numeral" on it...people go nuts for...or even a remake...we are guilty on this many times
