Neo CD question?

Ok, I checked around at NeoCd.com, Gamefaqs, and other places and I can not find an answer to my question. Here it goes any help would be appreciated :)

Before my games load up the machine goes to what looks like a CD menu with track number buttons and such. A large box appears in the middle of the screen but everything in it is Japanese so I can't read it. After a few seconds a message appears in the bottom left corner that says push start. After I do that I finally get to the game.

So my question is, how do I stop the machine from going to that screen, does it need a new backup battery, or is it something else?

Sorry if this should be in the tech forum, I couldn't decide wether to put it there or here. Obviously I chose here wink

Again, thanks for any input guys!

I don't know if I got you right, but the NGCD always enters the CD player screen before starting a game, that's a feature that can't be changed. As long as the "please wait" box is visible, the NGCD scans the disc and prompts you to either start the game or activate the CD player. If you don't press start but move the arrow to "play" on the CD player panel, it starts to play the 2nd track of the CD (which is the first music track).

i received my neo geo cd recently, i bought it on ebay.

when i went to test it, it doesn't read any games or audio cd's, the drive doesn't spin the discs.

the laser bumps into the center and goes back 2 or 3mm then after a few seconds it does it again indefinitely.

what can be wrong? and what can i do to repair it?

i do lots of repairs on other consoles back i can't find any info on the neo geo cd

any help?

cheers

yes but if you have the game inside the console when you turn on, the CD boot direct on the game with no cd player screen

Yeah, but that's not a "recommended practice", I always let my NGCD do its startup routine to avoid unnecessary stepper motor action, then insert a game CD and start playing.

I am not sure of that
i see no real reason to be an "unrecommended practice", after all it's a possibility of the console not of you (and the time of loading are very similar)

You want to let the Neo Geo CD load properly instead of over riding it to direct load, if you don't - you can burn the laser out and I am not sure how easy those are to find to replace :(

But I do wish I could find a replacement like a 20x or something so they would read faster. You can just about make a sandwich and come back and maybe the game will be loaded by then lol

And how is that with turning off the device, should I always exit the game and return to the main (grey) screen before putting it out (in order to save the motor / laser...)?

And is it any good to push all the buttons together, in order to return to the main screen? Does that affect the motor / laser?

Well as far as quiting a game - not really sure on that one, i would assume that you could just turn it off. Most laser burnout is more of the start up process and not the exit process. Of course I have no idea of how sensitive the lasers are for the GEO compaired to other systems. But exit I would assume just turn it off lol. With the systems for the most part being region free they should still load properly and go to the game screen before you start, like I mentioned before, booting direct to the game is faster, but with the technology that is in the GEO and considering it is a first gen run of the cd systems, it may be subject to laser failure if it doesn't just boot in a normal process.

Why would it be bad for it to start it with a game inside? The console allows it. I've never heard such foolishness.

I try to shutdown properly by exiting the game and waiting for the disc to come to a stop before turning the power off, rather than the 'surprise shut down.' It's a practice I follow with all my consoles.

Not saying don't start the Neo without the game inside - but actually over riding the bios on the system to auto boot the game direct to just play instead of going to launch screen and loading. Game inside should be fine, but on a system this old with 1st gen technology, over riding the bios on the laser to skip start up screen could burn the laser out. At least that was the way I was reading this thread, might have to go back and read it again LOL. But startup with a game inside the console should be ok.

Would you call the Sega CD a first gen CD-based console? I personally treat it no differently than any of my other CD-Based consoles despite it's apparent age. I always start the unit with a disc in it and let it boot on it's own (love that BIOS music) and when I'm done, I just shut the console off, regardless of whether it's on the title screen or in-game.

I bought the unit from a friend of my brother's and he barely used it but treated it well, so I assume it's not going to die anytime soon. :)

Edit: Oh yeah, I have a Sega CD Model 2 (top loader).

What do you mean by "override the bios"? You're not overriding it if it's an intended function of the bios.

There is a way to over ride the bios to the NGCD system to where it does not go to the load screen, it just boots the game. Im not sure how it is done, but I bought it off of ebay a few years back and had a guy look at it after the laser burned out - when you over ride the load screen it causes a lot of extra functioning of the laser and makes it work harder - in the long run causes death to the laser.

As far as the Sega, it is a first gen laser but quite a bit stronger than the Geo laser. Especially the second version, the first run of the sega CD was a Piece of shit!! If anyone has that one, I recommend the second version, CDX, or JVC X'Eye.
