How reliable are multi-voltage AC adapters for the AES?

I bought an AES off eBay and the seller included a different power supply, but it's a Radio Shack multi selector. It's the 5V type. I haven't tested the system yet, do you guys think I should? Will this hurt my system in the long run? I'm not willing to spend 30 bucks for a new power supply.

edit: by the way, it's a 2.0A

the 5V PSU is supposed to be 3A, not 2A.. it will not hurt the system, but the power supply might burn out eventually if the machine constantly draws more than 2A.

I've just measured the current a home system (with a 5V/3A PSU) draws and it's 1.2A. I doubt it'll need more than 2A even with the bigger Meg carts. It's also pretty obvious to me that SNK chose a 5V/3A PSU simply because it's a very common standard (5V/2A is less common).

Anyway, those multi-voltage PSUs are crap: get one of a good brand.

I just tried it on my system and all I get a static screen. Is this due to the power supply?

I'm going to order one from the Neo Store probably, unless you guys know where I can get a cheaper one.

By the way, it has a serial number of 19000+

Model no: NEO-AEC
Rating: 8w
Use Pro-pow ac adaptor only

It's difficult to say since I can't test the system myself...
A 5V/2A PSU that's working properly should be perfect for your NEO. But note that those multi-voltage PSUs usually have a switch for changing the polarity of the plug: for the Neo positive has to be external and negative internal.

If the PSU is OK (if you don't have a multimeter to test the voltage directly can you perhaps test it on something else?) and the polarity is correct, then it's your Neo that may have a problem...

I went ahead and checked the connections, turned out my RF adapter is a little messed up, so I held it to the system and it worked!

edit: just read your earlier post. Thanks for all the input, I really apreciate it. So I should be ok with the 2A, but should I swap it for the generic brand sold at Neo store just to be on the safe side?

Glad to hear you worked it out.

If the PSU works fine (even with bigger meg size carts) why change it? Just be careful not to switch it by mistake to 9 or 12V...

If it helps any, I've been using one of those exact same power supplies for about a 2 yrs and haven't had a single problem yet. The biggest meg game I have is KOF 98 I believe and trust me, it's had lots of play time.
