In the Brittish press this morning (Digitiser/Game Central), http://www.insertcredit.com/ have the full shebang.

Taito has made an aggressive move in the arcade industry with the announcement of a windows XP-based system architecture. The system takes the windows base, and takes away everything used for 'not-games', leaving a solid shell for Direct X product. They're calling it the Type X, appropriately. The CPU is a Celeron 2.5GHz Intel 865G chipset. Games copy to the harddrive of the TypeX via a security-encrypted USB drive, and windows games can be nearly directly 'ported.' And because it's windows architecture, they do have plans to bring it overseas, namely the west. They can't name any specific license they've acquired for the new arcade system, but with the Falcom/Aruze announcement on the third, and the Taito/Falcom announcement not two days before that, I think we've got candidate #1 lined straight up. The aim is to create a new industry standard - serious competition to the Atomiswave. Original press release here. ( http://www.taito.co.jp/news/details/040528.html )

While mentioning the Atomiswave, any UKers notice the recent upturn in CVG quality, import sections return and a monthly AW / arcade update, nicer.

thanks for the info.

so CVG have pulled their socks up?

I was buying it monthly until '98 (remember they previewd kof '98), and last time I had seen it, it was trashy. That magasine has been around for ages, and was an excellent read (great revies of Fatal Fury 1 for instance - they loved the game - said it was as good as Street Fighter 2). I had one issue about 13 years ago - it was a glossy edition that showcased the best games for Megadrive, Famicom, and PC ENGINE. Those where the days... Remember Mean Machine?

And anything that gives AW a run for its money is good enough in my books. Hope they get decent 2D games (specifically fighting games).

It would be kind of cool as a PC, but as an arcade format? Just sounds like mame.

Heh. I was thinking the same thing too.

Hope it does better than that oh-so-crappy Ultracade :shame:

Konami started using a computer running XP for the arcade releases of Beatmania IIDX 9th Style and Beatmania IIDX 10th Style.

I actually think Ultracade is kinda cool. :smirk:

And hey, as for the new Tatio system, competition is good, right? It's what makes video games great: competition. Remember "Sega does what Nintendon't"? The competition between Type X and Atmoiswave could be the shot in the arm that the U.S. arcade industry needs, assuming that the Type X gets a distributor. (as everybody should know by now, Sega, after the hostile takeover by Sammy, has worldwide distribution rights to the AW, so that isn't a problem for Sammy.) The good games will come eventually- every new system has teething problems in the first few months on the market. The good games will come... ;)

Cool concept...it does fall short on many games. I was disappointed big time with the slowdown on certain games when I played it. If the bugs are worked out, fine. If not... :crying:

It's high time we got RASTAN SAGA IV and another of the "Operation" Gun Games maybe this time with dual MP-5s or CAR-15s. Heck I'd even love to see a new Elevator Action game to boot.

Competition is good for the industry. Like how I'm really happy that there are three support consoles right now. Competition is fantastic for the consumer.

The things that stinks is that you have to pay extra for the good games, like Pac-Man and Galaga, and that there's no spinner (yet) for Tempest. Aw well, nothings perfect.

I think that the reason that there is slowdown is that the system runs off a 1.0 GHz Celeron... if the processor was faster, than the slowdown might go away... :smirk:

I don't know if Windows in a Cabinet is really a new concept. But as refined and Arcade made as this sounds it will prove to be interesting. On the plus side it may at least be affordable as far as cabs go.

Ultracade is a POS!
Seriously, I only heard terrible things about the latest version of the Ultracade. The biggest complain is that the emulator version that they are using makes the games run very slow; it has nothing to do with the hardware. Ultracade knows about this and another issues, and they are doing NOTHING to solve them.

Another complaint that I heard, is that many companies are trying to go after them because they buy broken boards on eBay. So they can claim that they have the ROMS legally, instead of paying the copyright fees.

Here's a statement printed on Ultracade's promo flyer:

All UltraCade games are 100% legally distributed games. We licence all games from the original manufacturer, or in the case where a licence isn't available we purchace legitimate legal copies for resale. The courts have ruled that it is legal to resell arcade game ROMs and use those ROMs for revenue generating. UltraCade Technologies guarantees that every copy we sell is 100% legal, and that you can operate all games in an UltraCade Platform.

That 100% legallity claim sounds like a bunch of bull crap. I am not a lawyer, but I do not think that the law does allow someone to buy a game board with the purpose to sell the ROMS without the consent of the copyright owner. And I hope that many companies do take Ultracade to court and challenge Ultracade's claims.

That's the legal loophole they're trying to use. Now they have a special ROM adapter to convert ALL Neo-Geo carts into games on the UltraCade system.

Another thing that can get them into trouble...ARTWORK! Can't use copies or photocopies of artwork without permission either ;)

Well Ultracade can burn in HELL!!! I just hope that SNK NEO GEO USA sues Ultracade for stealing all those NEO-GEO ROMS.

Anyway, I do not want to derail this topic any further. So as a fan of the Taito F3, FX-1A, FX-1B, and G-NET Arcade Systems and games, I wish Taito the best of luck with its new system. And hopefully I may add another kit into my collection. :drool_2:
