Hey thar fellow Coin-Op loyalists!! Man I'm stoked......I've just finished my latest SuperGun other than the implementation of an video encoder, but its all provisioned as far as wiring goes so RGB only at the mo!! All things in time I guess, but other than that its my most resolved and complete solution yet, supporting all the variables I could think of like 4 player games, Kick Harness input for 6 button fighters, -5v which comes in handy every now and again, etc, etc..........Anyway take a look at the pics and critique away guys, I'm always up for some constructive criticism!! :D BTW, The small cluster of microswitches are for 'Test'/MVS game select 'up'/MVS games select 'down'/'service' and I use 8 pin mini-din for RGB output and a 3 pin mini microphone jack for DC input.

Hehe my TV he says :mr_t: Thats my dearly beloved Nanao 29" dual res monitor and boy does it get a workout!! I can't justify the space a full cab would take up in my fience and my current 'little' place, so this is the next best thing. Beggars can't be choosers........... :tickled:

Heres a pic of all the insides and believe me, with the relatively compact casing and desire to keep it as a modular type construction (as in everything baring isolation plugs and connectors so the unit can easily be completely dismantled without desoldering anything) this is as tidy as it was ever gonna be!!

Very nice work! I am very impressed, especially with the holes for the DB 15's. Very clean...

Wow... really slick work.

Don't know how you're gonna squeeze a video encoder inside but you might want to try a stereo din port in place of the right-left (red-white) audio jacks.

What exactly is a kick harness? And why is it necessary? Doesn't the 15-pin D connector allow
1. Up
2. Down
3. Left
4. Right
5. Select
6. Start
7. Button 1
8. Button 2
9. Button 3
10. Button 4
11. Button 5
12. Button 6
13. +5v
14. ground
15. (spare)

Considering how close jamma connector and kick harness connector are to each other on a CPS2 motherboard, when the supergun is plugged into the jamma connector doesn't it obstruct the way to the kick harness connector?

Yup you're exactly right on the Neo controller pin-out having enough spare pins for 3 extra push buttons and I use the last of the spares for coin input. The kick harness is for primarily Capcom fighting games. I just run a home made ribbon cable from the board header to the 10 pin connector on the Supergun to activate the extra kick buttons on D15 ports 1 & 2 that are needed on these games. Obviously I can't use regular Neo Sticks for 6 button gaming, but I've modded a few 3rd party controllers like the fantastic Namco PSX gray and yellow stick to do this job!!

Hehe yeah you'd think so wouldn't ya, but I just checked again and I've got about a 1/2" of depth between the two, check out the pics.

Time indeed! In fact I made myself take my time with bits like cutting out for the D15 ports and the 10 and 34 pin aux connectors as if I took my usual approach and rushed it; it would have been just plain nasty! Those tossing round the idea of working with aluminium housings, but reckon it’s too hard compared to plastic, reconsider! I found it quite good, mainly because plastic can be easy to go too far with filing wise, and mess up an otherwise perfectly good clearance hole, aluminium is slower going and ya just seem to slip up less! Watch the file clog factor though :(

where did you get the tool, that you used for making the holes for the joyports? my dad told me to stop using a file, but i can't find a shop that has those things in stock.

what i would need is one for a male 9 pin d-sub connector. maybe also one for a 15 (2 rows) pin one.

otherwise ...
awesome. i like just about everything besides the two different shaped rca jacks. (red & white)

Man this may sound like I'm trippin, but as much as from the photo the audio RCA jack look like two different makes put together, on close inspection of my gun they are identicle!!!............??? How weird is that, they really do look different in that pic too uh!!

Hrmm I don’t want to kill the mystery on the 'D' connector cutting, but I did it the hard way, carefully marking them out with a template and guidelines then my trusty cordless drill removed most of the metal. The remainder was cleaned up with a small hacksaw blade and flat mill file and a smallish round file. Not too glamorous, but with persistence a clean result can be the reward!! One trick I used was to lean the walls of the cut always back into the inside of the unit so that the connectors jam in tight at the top of the holes. Also using nice plastic D15's probably helped as they are a little more flexible for working into slightly smaller holes than they are designed for! ;)

Hehe thanks for the kind words Mag!! The casing I bought from an electrical supplier near me who mainly deal with the electrical/electronics trades, so they have an amazing range of stuff and the prices are generally more reasonable than main stream suppliers with their fancy sachets and barcodes etc. These guys just have drawers and trays full of loose components. Plus the guys behind the counter really know their stuff and are often engineers etc which is really helpful, not just you're regular car audio and cell phone specialists!! :p

The good news for you is that the housings are made by the good folks at Hammon Manufacturing in the States and Canada! Heres a URL to the type of thing I got my hands on on the Hammond site -

Cheers! :D

Simply beautiful work. Props on a job very well done!

I don't have anywhere near the know how to make on of these things, but out of curiosity, how much money did this thing run you (if you even kept tally)?

Someone asked me the same thing in a PM so I worked out a ball park figure already! Not including any equipment and tooling, just for materials would be around $75 - $85. Maybe a little less, but yeah like you half assumed I wasn't keeping a tally! Obviously the cost of a Jrok or similar encoder would be an additional cost, unless ya make one up yourself obviously!! :D
