Hi guys,
I'm about to buy myself a JAP AES system. I really want to be able to play puzzle bobble, puzle de pon etc and would like to get some MVS stuff like the MS's cheaper than the AES prices! I have no room for an Arcade MVS so will the phantom do what I need? How does it work? Anyone got any pictures of 1 in use?
Final q is how much do they normally go for and is arcadeshock a good dealer?
THANKS GUYS!
Jay

The Phantom will do roughly what you want, though it won't work with some of the newest releases, like MS5.

Some people have no problem with it, others have some, but ultimately you don't have to have a cab to have an MVS set up. A one slot and supergun need be no bigger than a home system and as you are in Europe, the initial cost will be probably be lower than a home machine too.

The carts are different shapes, but the content is the same. It just depends which bios is in the machine you play them in what comes out as it were. A Japanese MVS bios will give you a Japanese arcade experience, an English home machine bios will give you an English at home experience (and an Englishman's home is castle, so obviously that's pretty cool).

The machine you use your phantom with will determine what you get from the carts, not the carts themselves.

you could also get a supergun.... If your in the UK, they are easy to build or cheap to buy.

Is it just me, or is posting huge pics of scantily-clad women in your signature on a video game site about the lamest, dorkiest thing one can possibly do?
Seriously.

Not to mention they're too big.

I think grotesquely, surgically, inflated scantily clad women are probably a step dorkier.

Nothing says ‘I’m a loser’ quite as loud.

The Phantom-1 is an overpriced scam that you shouldn't support.

i've had the phantom-1 since it was first brought out by !arcade! and it's awesome. it allows me to collect and play MVS games, all-the-while allowing me to hang on to my AES system. sure, metal slug 5 (and probably king of fighters 2003) won't work with the phantom-1, so i'll just pick it up in AES format. the amount of money it's saved me more than makes up for the expensive home cart.

Your best bet would be to get a consolized MVS set up. Go for a 2 slot simply because most of the 2 slot boards come with a memory card reader on board and some of the 1 slot boards can be kind of glitchy with some of the games. You can get all the MVS carts you want for about 3/4 less than their AES counterparts and you won't have to worry about your game working with a phantom converter.

Although these sentiments are strong, they succinctly - albiet harsly - sum up my feelings on the Phantom-1 converter. My experiences with said device (the blue, supposedly better second revision) weren't all that positive, as I shall describe in the following paragraphs.

For starters, my first P1 produced garbled visuals when used in conjunction with scaling-intensive titles like SS4. Usually, this converter problem is attributed to loose, old, or "damaged" home system cartridge slots. However, since I was using the new converter with a "mint condition," modded system purchased directly from Arcade Solutions, said seller wasn't able to attribute the scaling glitch to my system and agreed to replace it with a second converter. Luckily, the second converter didn't suffer from visual glitching, but the fact that this problem has been reported by others, combined with the fact that it's not uncommon, does not bode well for so pricey a peripheral.

Secondly and perhaps most annoyingly, the converter requires an EXCESSIVE amount of force in order to attach and remove MVS carts from its female end. After a mere three cart attachements/removals, my P1's end connector started to crack, flaking off bits of plastic. Trust me, you'll get really tired, really fast, of forcibly "fighting" cartridges both off and on of the P1, should you choose to get one. Although some people claim the connector "loosens up" over time, mine never did. It remained annoingly difficult to work with up until I decided to sell it off via eBay and make it someone else's problem...

The final nail in the product's proverbial coffin it its cost. I don't know if it's still in production or not, (I don't think it is) but for as expensive as it'll likely be, should you be able to source one, you would be better off saving up for either a cabinet or, as another poster stated, a "consolized" MVS setup. In short, if you want to play MVS games, go with a "real" MVS setup. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts.

the whole thing with it being hard to insert a cart into the phantom-1 is that if you do it "correctly," it's actually very little trouble. just insert the cart at an angle, starting from the end with the audio jacks. then gradually wiggle it in from that end to the other end. it still requires a little force, but it's a lot easier than inserting the cart in straight up.

anyway, the best bet is the consolized 2-slot, though. those things are sleek and sexy (especially in black). the only down side is that SvC: chaos doesn't have an MVS cart. but if you don't care for that game, then it's all gravy.

It usually breaks in after a while, making inserting and removing carts much easier..
