It really sucks how Gamefan died. Express.com owned gamefan and pretty much just saw it as a way to advertise the games and crap that the had. So one day, out of nowhere, the express.com people just canned the magazine and fired pretty much everyone related to Gamefan in any way, shape, or form. Some writers left to do some .com writing at some places (I forgot where). ECM and a couple others still had faith in us Hardcore Enthusiasts and got the first issue of GameGo magazine (which never took off at all - so there is only the first issue).

Just thinking about Gamefan and all of the writers almost makes me cry... It's a really sad story...

Here is the website of one of the ex-GF.com writers... www.videowrestling.com

So sad...

gamefan was without a doubt good. I'm personally a game informer fan. gamefan had some freaky-ass comics though. What was up with that dude with the TV head? Insane.

Gamefan IMHO was THE mag to get every month when it was being published if you were into import gaming. I snapped it up every month to see the latest PC Engine games and then later on the latest import Sega Saturn releases. Oh yeah it had some good Neo Geo coverage at times too .

A regrettable end to a quality publication. In it's heydey, they, EGM, Game Players, and Next Generation were the mags to get. Next Generation's impact withered away and became a shell of it's former glorious self before it died. Now all I have left is EGM, but it's not the same mag it used to be. Remeber those monster holiday issues? I remeber the largest ever was the one with Eternal Champions on the cover.

Come to think of it, gaming AND literature have not been the same since the 16 bit days. Damn progress.....

The mag was the best, and has yet to be topped. Especially back in the Diehard Gamefan days.

Dave Halverson was a huge part of it's success, and then moved on to create Gamer's Republic, which was also very good. He has a new magazine I think now, but I haven't picked one up. The crazy thing is I saw him on Access Hollywood like a week ago while I was channel flipping. He was talking about video games...on Access Hollywood! Way to go Dave.

The shit that went down inside Gamefan is stuff of legend. The infamous 'Jap' article, the late/no paychecks, great shit. There is a thread on a board somewhere between ECM and Dave, I'll have to find it and post here, really funny shit.
But I agree that Gamefan was tehb est gaming magazine ever, i have every issue from the Sonic 2 cover until it's untimely death.
They also had the BEST game chat room on the net, met some life long friends there. Was under the nick Gouki in case anyone reemmbers.
