About to buy Neo Pocket Color...

I just wanted to hear from you guys about what to look for and to avoid when buying a pocket color.

I'm assuming there is only one NEO Pocket Color unit...please correct me if I'm wrong.

1. Does region matter?
2. Any particular version thats better?
3. Must have games?
4. Are there color and monochrome versions of the games?
5. Accessories?
7. Anything I should know in general?

oh ..almost forgot...whats a good price...Im mostly seeing 40 - 140 bucks depending on condition of course

You're wrong. There is the original NGPC, as well as the NGPC Slimline. The Slimline is a smaller, sleeker unit, but offers the same functionality.

The early games are monochrome. The Neo Geo Pocket was released before the NGPC, and there were a handful of games that made it out on that format.

Eh, Dreamcast link cable is kind of cool for KOF:BdP and KOF:Evolution, but not something to go out of your way for.

You're going to love it. The NGPC is fucking awesome.

I sold my back up anthracite unit for $15 bucks or so (to TonK maybe?), I can't see spending much more than $40 for a complete boxed unit personally.

Pardon me, qube did in fact list Gals Fighter.
NGPC is great, still my favorite handheld, and love the microswitch stick.

I forgot to ask if the unit is backlit or not...

Im assuming the slimline model costs mosre...whats a decent price for one thats in say a B+ or A , as far as condition?

Any difference in battery life between the slim and regular?

When you say the region doesnt matter... does that mean if I get a Jap system it will play english games and the text is in english? or will it convert it to Japanese?
Or does the thing have an option menu to choose?

The unit is not backlit, but the NGPC has one of the best TFT LCD for a portable device — I'm surprised at the ease with which I can see action on the screen even with 18 watt Earthlights. Battery life of Slimline and Regular both clock in at about 40 hours. When you turn on the NGPC without a cart in it, it allows you to set the region as either Japanese or English. If a cart has both languages on it, then the region you set will determine which language content on the cart is displayed. Slimline can run anywhere from $40 to $65.

No, but some people do mods using the Afterburner™ kit that was made for the Game Boy Advance.

I haven't priced one in years, but I would think $50 - $70 in boxed, near mint (maybe new) condition isn't unreasonable. Maybe bokmeow would have a better idea since I think he still keeps up on NGPC prices?

I seem to remember the slimline getting a bit better life, maybe a couple/few hours....? Hard to remember now though.

some of the sealed ones are like 140 - 240...which is nutso..

40 hours of battery life is CRAZY good...almost unbelievable...but I do think I have heard that before when I think about it.

Well this is all sounding good to me... looks like I'm def going to get one...when I think about it, its kinda odd I don't have one already, I own all the handhelds since the tiger game days...own like 3 GBA SPs alone... I guess I didn't think fighters would be good...but I bought SamSho 3 on the old school game boy and Real Bout as well... super surprised how good they are considering how much SamSho1 on the game boy sucks my ballz. I don't even really like the game-gear version of SamSho1 very much. I wish I bought 3 back in the day when all I had was a game boy and was wishing I could find a good fighting game...but I didn't know the gameboy could play Japanese titles then.

Wait until you play fighters on the NGPC. No other handheld system comes close for quality fighters, not a one. The NGPC (unsurprisingly) owned/s the handheld fighter market.

Make sure you pick up Cardfighters Clash and at least one fighter immediately with your purchase of the unit.

well...Im sure my psp kof collections trumps them all...I mean they are literrally roms from what I cant tell...but thats apples and oranges to begin with

I have never played a card fighter game...it just seems like I wouldnt like it...reminds me of magic the or something...not my cup of tea if thats case

You're in for a pleasant surprise, trust me.

The NGPC's stick fucking destroys the PSP's shitty d-pad, making the fighters infinitely more playable.

And give CFC a chance, I guarantee you will like it. You'll never read a dissenting opinion here about the game, and that's saying a lot considering how many dissenting opinions there are on this site ;)

Personally I thought the CFC DS was fine 'cos I'm used to the card discard mechanics of TCG's like Shadowfist, but it's true that the card mechanics weren't balanced out a bit more — And the story was boring. CFC 1 and 2 on the NGPC were much better with its free roaming environments.

I never played the DS version personally. After watching trailers and reading other's impressions of it, I honestly didn't want to tarnish my experience with the original NGPC games.

CFC on NGPC is one of my all-time top games though, top 10 for sure, probably top 5.

I'm going to have to look that game up online...I didn't even know there was a story, or any "roaming" ...I figured card battle games just had one mode, like a traditional card game

Add Sonic the Hedgehog to the list of must-haves. It was by far the best handheld Sonic until the GBA rolled around. There are some other cool casual titles as well, like a port of Pac Man, Puyo Puyo, etc.

The reason I bought the NGPC was for Ogre Battle Gaiden. But since it doesn't have an English option, I can't really recommend it unless you can read Japanese to play this SRPG.

I did notice that sonic was on the NGP, which is such an odd match IMO.
I don't like the GBA sonic advances, even with the GBA version of sonic 1 the frame rate just sucks IMO..I figured any of the portable sonics wouldn't live up to what I think sonic is all about..which is basically smooth framerate...the new DS release of all the Genesis Sonics however is great.....as is Sonic Rush on the DS...the whole dual screen thing works very well.

I'm really looking forward to the release of Sonic 4 Episode 1 on PSN and XBL.
From the pics I saw, its what I was hoping the first Sonic game on the PS3 was going to be. (boy was I wrong) ...but the basic 2d format and classic art style they seem to have reverted to for Sonic 4 looks to be exactly what I wanted...its supposed to come out in the summer...I def will be getting that mofo

NGPC is awsome and the stick is a winner!!!

Everything qube said is pretty much spot on, there's really nothing to add except for a sweet XX screen litted mod. Best money I ever spent. Also, get more than one unit just so you can have one lited and the other regular.

One more thing, stay away from the complete games, just get the carts in their clear snap cases and trust me you'll be having just as much fun for a fraction of the money.

I wish all of SNK's systems would have been a bigger success... almost everyone I meet or already know who sees my arcade cabs and posters have no idea what a NeoGeo is... the closest people get to "knowing" anything is that they have seen or played one of the metal slugs at a movie theater lobby, or have seen one of the SamSho games at some point in an arcade back in the late 90s.
