Why did SNK make the lifebars flicker like they do? Its the most distracting thing ever

I get halfway through the game before it drives me mad...flicker, flicker, flicker

Who the hell ok'd that decision

(side note, I am playing on NGCD, perhaps its different on AES?)

So play SS2 or 3. Better games, both.

agreed, 1, 2, and 3 are more enjoyable than 4 any day of the week.

Haven't played SS4, but it's on its way to me as part of a package deal when I bought a 4-slot board. What's so bad about it compared to 1,2 and 3?

As much as I really love 3, it's hit detection is fucking terrible at times.

I have 1-4, all Neo Geo CD (should buy 2 on AES, but havent yet) and I agree, IV isnt great, but I have been playing 1-4 to get through all of them.

No, on a standard 4x3 Sony television. And that flashing just pisses me off! Suprised I havent fished out on the floor from a strobe induced seizure

I had a harder time adjusting to it my self. It always seems like the moves were not as fluid or easy to do in the game as 1 or 2 (I still kinda suck with an arcade stick though). Its not bad but its not as good as 1 or 2 at least in my opinion.

I think I recall the health bars flickering in the PSX port. It's pretty lame, but nothing I couldn't get used to.

strange, that effect blends better with a CRT and doesn't work very well in a LCD.

I never paid much attention to it because of the time limit to finish the game, I'm always focused on finishing the matches quickly.

and the real problem with the game is the CD attack (dial a combo), looks like an afterthought in game development and I really dislike this combo system.

Despite 3 not getting the development time it needed I'd still put it way above IV. Fun game despite the quirks

I rank them II, I, III, and IV in order of what I think is best

IV does feel a bit 'half baked' and definately not as fluid. I haven't played much, but the fighting system just seems weak

What triggers the button mashing screen during a fight? Is it at random or is it just when both do the same strength attack in the same direction?

Where does V fall in your ranking system?

SS 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all great.

Every other single SS game sucks.*

*I have not yet had the pleasure to play either of the SS64 games, though I would really like to.

Might have to get a supergun...again...

I know on I and II, both players dashing toward each other will start it or both players attacking each other at the exact same time will also do it. Not sure on the others...

Only reason to play 4 is for the roster.

Don't know why everyone seems to be down on 4, but it's got several things going for it.
For instance, a very fun single player mode (rare for a fighter). The timed aspect is a unique challenge and the map that shows your progress is a nice visual touch.
As for the flickering life bars the OP mentioned, I can honestly say I never ever noticed it being distracting.

Character select screens looks like crap though.
