Can anyone give me schematics, or a really good description on how to create an auto/rapid-fire feature on a custom joystick?
I opened up my NES Advantage, and all they use is a variable resistor. Is it that easy?

I would use a NE555 clock/timer IC. Set it up to switch a transistor across the fire button at say 10 Hz (frequency is not important within reason) That would be a nice project. And very easy.

Will put up a simple circuit soon, Ive been meaning to do this on a cab for a while, would like to test it first.

Variable resistor ? Dont see how that would do it.

I would say on the NES the auto fire would go on in the consol. The variable resistor you saw in the control is for joysick movement.

Consider it done, in about a week. Need to put it together and test first.
Imagine running through MS without the fire button hitting/mashing.
Heavy machine gun :D

OK got a preliminary autofire circuit together, the fire button switch will need to be connected to switch the NE555 vcc supply (it does not have to be 12 volts, 5 volts will also work if you prefer)
The switching transistor(s) is connected emitter to ground, collector to jamma/mvs edge connect 22 for player one and Z for player two.
I havent tested it in a cab yet, will try it out this week. It should work OK, its simple enough.
This is just to give an idea of the concept, will post a circuit of the tried and tested version soon.

Hmmm..very interesting idea indeed, Toddy. Could that be applied to a custom AES/Supergun controller, for example, in the form of a small switch?

Btw, thanks to the topic you started on the use of lightguns with cabs I will hopefully soon be able to get an Operation Wolf PCB and play it with my supergun as it was meant to be played...with a damn lightgun! buttrock

I dont see any reason why not

Im going to use the D button to switch on the autofire (not playing any games that use this button at the moment)

Got it fitted tonight, works well. Decided to run the 555 off the 5 volts and using the D button for autofire. To use the A button a dual ganged two way switch will be needed to switch autofire in whilst disconnecting the original hook up.

Piccy of the project here
<a href="http://www.boomspeed.com/ttooddddyy/af.JPG" target="_blank">http://www.boomspeed.com/ttooddddyy/af.JPG</a>

Using these components the clock is running at 80 Hz which is plenty fast enough. Like hitting the button 80 times a second. buttrock

I assume the AES controllers work on the same principle as mvs ie grounding a dc level when the button is pressed to send the fire command ? Can anyone confirm this.

Good job ttooddddyy. Good to see another electronics dude here.

Yea it be nice to have turbo on the NEO controllers wouldn't it?

I have so many MOD ideas for my AES yet so often ideas like this never get implemented because I'm never happy enough with the results. Jeeze its been months and I'm still trying to decide what kind of LED pilot light I want on my AES.

Honestly, no. I mean, big props to toddy for his tech skills but autofire is a feature that alters the nature of gameplay, it's cheating...in many cases it will even make the game less enjoyable and more difficult: I tried Metal Slug on emu with an autofire pad and my results got worse...it can make a big difference for shmups but then again that's cheating...

I agree MKL, it was just a project and bit of a challenge. Using the D button for autofire doesnt effect normal gameplay but gives an option which can make play more interesting.
Its good in Sonic Wings wink

Some things just have to be tried.
