MN Winter Neo-Geo Gathering!

When: February 6th, 2010, 1pm onwards
Where: Ryu1972's place, at 4824 E 53rd St, Minneapolis
Who: YOU and anybody you want to invite. Keepin' it light.
How much: FREE because it's Ryu1972's common area. If you want to bring snacks/drinks, that'd be more than welcome.
What to bring: If you have any of the following it would be appreciated - folding tables (that can support TVs) and chairs, TVs, video games and systems, power strips.

My fellow Minnesotans, it is time for us to discuss what we'd like to do for the winter gathering, if we even want to have one. After the discussion before Black Dynamite the other night, there are a lot of things we should figure out...

1) What are we going to play? We've talked about making this a Neo Geo centric gathering, but what does it really mean? Should we only have Neos and Neo setups? Do we stretch that to include other arcade type games, casual games, or even modern games?

2) Are we going to have tournaments? It sounds like people want this one to be the more hang-outy kind of gathering, but I guarantee some people would want to "make it interesting." If we do tournaments, are they going to be on the Neo alone? Are they all going to be fighters? Will djdelly show up to school everyone in Twinkle or will Bobak take the reins and try to get people to attempt MD3 against him?

3) What scale should we have the event? This is a harder question to ask, but it covers a number of things: do we actively try to get the SRK guys or other forums to come out? do we do any advertising beyond this thread and maybe a facebook page? how long should the event be planned for?

4) Where should we hold the gathering? We can probably go to the Ramada again, but if we were to rent out the same space, it still has its costs, and we'd need to charge people for the room. Otherwise, depending on #3, we'll see where else we can get something going.

5) When is good for everyone? In general. Saturdays? January? February? August?

Also, I was wondering if any of the veterans know how many of these Neo gatherings we've done (not including the MN Meltdown). Just curious.

Post your thoughts now! We'll come up with something in the next month or so.

Well, the MN Meltdowns were the Neo Gatherings until the tournaments took over...

So yeah, just remove the excessive tournaments, make it about casual fun, interesting games people rarely see in person, bring lots of snack foods and --voila-- you have a fun experience.

Keep the invitation open to anyone interested, no restrictions.

The problem slowly developed when we shifted from houses and apartment common rooms to hotels, as we had to start generating fees to offset one or two people from shouldering the entire load.

Anyone have access to a sizeable party or common room?

I'd like to see it just being casual as well. The MN meltdowns would be good if it was just left as an annual thing. That way there is more anticipation when it comes around again.

I would say a good time to hold it would be in January or February, that way it won't interfere with anyone's holiday plans.

It seems as if these gatherings mutated into something entirely different from what it was originally intended to be. A huge factor was the "SNKerization" of these gatherings! I think you should divide the gatherings up again to a ng.com one where it's all about casual gaming and how it was originally intended to be and then a SRK one where the SRK dudes do what they want which I assume is competitive tournaments. Ng.com and SRK doesn't mix well to begin with as it's two different types of crowds in my opinion. Ng.comers are more collectors first and not much into competitive tournament level play. While the oppoisite is true of SRK members. So it's no wonder the gatherings mutated into something totally unrecognizable from the earlier gatherings that were ng.com dominated once the SRK members started to step up and organize them. Just my thoughts.

Dude, that's what's I was saying at Chino. We should charter a plane or something.

Then we had a raise of hands on who actually had a passport and realized it wasn't going to be logistically possible this year :(

I would say that's a tad sweeping and not entirely true, and I assume you meant "SRKerization" since SNK is what NG.com is arguably about, but the gist is in the neighborhood of what we're talking about.

There are plenty of SRK people who like casual gaming and communal activity, and there are a good share of NG.com people who place very well at the tourneys that are held. What this winter gathering isn't aimed at are people who come to tourney and not be a part of a community of gamers getting together over games.

If that makes it a smaller gathering for winter, no problem.

Wow, I just caught that after reading you post about SRKerization. But Yeah that's what I meant not SNKerization. Man I didn't know I made a mistake until I read your post. Buy yeah you know what I am talking about. I was making a generalization, but obviously there will be exceptions for certain people from both forums not fitting in to the collector/tourney player categorization. I mean we both agree that Ng.com are more collectors and SRK are more tourney players. I mean when you read the threads from both forums over here it's more people showing off their stuff and over there it's more like who's going to drive hundreds of miles for EVO and stuff like that. There will be exceptions like I said with members from both forums but for the most part the ng.com/collector srk/tourney player categorization is fairly accurate I would say.

I am keeping an eye on this one.

I miss the older gatherings before they became tourney centric. Yes, we had tourneys, but there were also a lot of cool other things going on as well. I have enjoyed the meltdowns, but not being a fighting game player and not knowing the majority of the SRK people, I pretty much felt like I have been out on the fringe of things at those gatherings.

I yearn for those laid back gatherings.

I liked the early days of the gatherings as well (2003). They were more laid back, had lots of games anybody could get into, and a good variety of games, most of which people haven't seen before.

I think we should have some SNK stuff, Neo, shooters, and some light gun games with the Wii, and of course Rock Band/DJ Hero.

So it seems questions 1-3 are getting the same answers from a lot of people. Basically, we'll have a bunch of Neo games and whatever else people want to bring, with no scheduled tournaments, and a very laid back environment. This will really be a Neo gathering like the old ones where we don't need to have that many people show up, but it's not like we'd turn anyone away. Unless they are a bummer, because this Neo gathering will be a NO BUMMER ZONE.

That's pretty much how I envisioned it anyway. As much as the Meltdowns appeal to people, it's a different entity than a Neo gathering. And as much as we MN people hang out, we don't often get together to actually play video games. Usually it's just movies and food.

So that leaves two questions, when and where? If I just throw out a few dates, can we put in our votes?

Jan 16
Jan 23 (I can't this day)
Jan 30
Feb 6
Feb 13 (pre-Valentine's?)

I could probably call up the Ramada and see if we could get a room for cheap. If we go the hotel route, does it also make sense to get one of those hospitality rooms for the snackies and Bobak's Booze Bar?

Durr... let's do it on the 23rd! [joking, I just wanted to do my impression of previous date selections]

I'm completely flexible as of right now.

Awesome, I've been waiting for this. :)

I'm all for a Neo-centric laid back gathering...the tournies are fun and everything but I'd just like to hang out and do some casual gaming.

I'd be willing to drag my 1-slot there depending on 2 factors: that I have my friend help me load it into my van and that I completely redo the CP so it isn't ass :emb:

Any date works for me as long as it's on a weekend. I have tons of casual/multiplayer stuff I can bring including a complete Rock Band setup, various karaoke games, 10 player Saturn Bomberman, etc etc. If we decide to have snack food I can load up at ye olde Costco on the cheap. I would volunteer an apartment event room but my complex doesn't have one and my apartment is tiny. :(

I miss the Fox's old apartment building on Lexington Parkway --you couldn't beat that community room they had.

Oh yeah, I'm going to camp at 2am at the one on MN7...I need some new clothes anyway.

I've got RB2 w/RB1+AC/DC imported and a decent amount of DLC, plus Beatles. I just have the crappy first generation instruments though. I also have Karaoke Revolution volumes 2, 3 and Country in addition to Singstar 1, 2, ABBA, Country and Amped plus some DLC (yay Rick Astely :tickled:).

Depending on the date I could bring my Wii w/a Hori stick at US Tatsunoko too. :eye::eye:

Do you have RE: Darkside Chronicles? I'd like to try that.

Before I was about to call the Ramada to check prices and whatever, I completely forgot to ask:

If we have it on a Saturday, what time should the event be? 3pm onwards into the night? More time?

I can make it any time after 11AM, so if we have it later I can show up for setup.
