God of War Collection - gaming philosophical question

Given how good this game looks, in light of the fact that it is two of the best-looking PS2 games ever made, would any of you be willing to sacrifice some of this generation's visual fidelity in exchange for an absolute rock-solid 60fps frame rate in every single game? Just curious.

I only own a Wii, so my fidelity is out the window. So why not?

This is a philosophical question?

I don't think I would though.

Absolutely.

I always preferred smooth scrolling and a high frame rate over high-end graphics and dev'ers should too because they make games, not graphic shows. Too bad the OMG-i-can-see-every-zit-on-the-hero's-face 1235323 x 789243894 HD x 5 graphics are a major (or THE major?) selling point nowadays.

Yes, there's nothing worse than a 3D game that runs ~20 FPS because the developer is using every last bit of processing power to make everything pretty.

The shit gives me a headache after just a few minutes of watching it.

Don't they already do this? Sure there's stuff like Crysis and STALKER (with Enhanced Full Dynamic Lighting or whatever) but most games don't push it that far. I haven't seen a really breathtakingly beautiful slideshow of a game in years. Even on a cheapass video card it's all 60hz.

(The problem now is, instead of just turning things down to 640x480 and watching a PC game run acceptably on a console, developers now need to deliver close to the same resolutions on about a tenth the processing power.)

No. 60fps is over-rated in terms of being integral toward a solid gaming experience.

When Insomniac says they'll no longer be forcing Ratchet and Clank games to be 60fps so they can allow for greater detail in the graphics, obviously it isn't that important to developers either.

As for any game running below 30fps, then yes; no matter how great a game looks whats the point if its choppy and unwatchable?

It depends on which game you're talking about. Something slow like Halo or Gears of War could run locked at 30fps no problem. Try to play a manic game like Doom or Quake 1 at 30fps, and your aim goes to shit compared to an uncapped framerate. Quick camera movements + sub-60 fps = disorientation.

I would have to disagree. I know it's been said before, but look at a game like CoD4. It plays simply amazing thanks in part to the framerate. It makes aiming and shooting much smoother without the motion blur sometimes associated with 30fps. Not to say 30fps is bad, as I do enjoy Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company, but it has to be done right.

For my gaming dollar, nothing looks better than 60fps, and if that means giving up some fidelity, then so be it.

60fps > 30fps

As long as it doesn't chug along visually I really don't care.

Since we seem to be talking about FPS somewhat I must say that I greatly prefer better physics than graphics. Destructible terrain is awesome (I'm looking at you Bad Company and BF1943) and I really hope they can improve the physics so that things like High Explosive (HE) and Armor Piercing (AP) munitions impact walls/structures differently as they do in the real world. Of course I wouldn't mind if they made it so you had to pick what kind of rounds were in your tank's main gun.

My only philosophical GoW collection question is whether I should drop $30 on it or not (I have a $10 coupon).

The odds of me playing through both games is minimal, but playing through GoW 2 (ver. 2.0) for the first time might be worth $30?

Likely the answer is yes, we'll just have to see where my motivation take me today.

Can we get a comprehensive list of PS3 games which run at 60 fps? I don't know how to tell besides googling for the answer. I'm guessing games that look ultra real are the ones that run lower? Uncharted 2 & LittleBigPlanet come to mind. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe the thread title should be changed to something along the lines of, "Console games that run at 60 fps discussion"?

60FPS gives me a fucking headache, 30 all the way.

One of the main reasons I got Stranglehold on the PS3 versus the 360 is because the framerate is lower (never dips below 30 though).

I don't really understand what is being asked either, but GT5 Prologue and R&C A Crack in Time are two examples of 60 FPS games. Both buttery smooth.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused by what was being asked.
