If you really like Gundam games then WonderSwan wins I guess.

Can anyone give me a definitive impartial analysis of which one would win?

You realize that this is a site dedicated to the NEO GEO, right? Just saying...

The NGPC is a better system with better games. The Wonderswan doesn't have anything close to MOTM, Biomotor Unitron, Neo Turf Masters, or Cotton. The only reason to buy a Wonderswan is for Judgment Silversword, and it's stupidly expensive and hard to find.

I agree NGPC has superior games overall for the system, however someone looking for certain things like some notable RPG's and games like Golden Axe shouldn't count the wonderswan out as a viable portable. I love my my NGPC to death, I think MoTM is one of the best portable fighting games ever made. Not to mention Sonic is fast and fluid, neo turf masters is engaging, metal slug is active fun. Still there are still many gems on the wonderswan too.

I like Gundam games and I think Biomotor Unitron is a Gundam/Dragon warrior type game that any Gundam fan would like.

If you really like JRPGs and can read Japanese, the WS(C) comes out on top.

For the rest of us, I think the NGPC reigns supreme. Better fighters (not that Pocket Fighter is bad, but it pales in comparison to stuff like MotM and The Last Blade), better puzzle games (Gunpey EX is pretty much the sole reason I bought a SwanCrystal, but I'd rather play Magical Drop Pocket any day, and, well, you get the idea. The only genre where the WonderSwan bests the NGPC, apart from JRPGs, is in shmups - because Judgement Silversword is amazing. And amazingly overpriced. I'm very glad I got to play it, thanks to a friend who loaned it to me, but I'd never fork out that $100+ for my own copy.

The wonderswan would have been a much more viable system if the developers weren't so shortsighted in making so many of the RPGs japanese only.

Most of the world speaks English. Even in most of asia, though not the native language, people learn and understand english. Who understands Japanese? Just japanese people, and otaku. In other words, not enough people.

WS is lacking in selection vs NGP, but it's not just Judgement Silversword. Some stuff I picked up a while back:

I think those developer's decisions were made with the GameBoyAdvance in mind. As we well know that system was a powerhouse for RPG's. It might not have been viable to bring a game over when competing with that behemoth.

But strangely enough I still favor my NGPC over the GBA because that controller nub is excellent for fighters, and I love fighters best.

Though not on the wonder swan or neo geo congrats on getting the rumble version of Mario 64 I have been wanting to get that version for ages, and they are both great consoles, but match of the millennium is amazing even by today's standards.

I'd say the NGPC and Wonderswan Color/Crystal are more or less equal.

NGPC has a better screen, better d-pad, a headphone port and a lot of great games.

Wonderswan Crystal has more buttons, uses only 1 battery, can handle more colors, is smaller and lighter, and has its fair share of good games (the WS version of Magical Drop is pretty good), including my favorite handheld RPG ever : "Wild Card".

However, a lot of the Wonderswan's games rely on being able to read Japanese (not much of a problem for me), so the NGPC would probably have the edge for those who don't.

having both i would have to agree with this for the most part. i would get some of the rpgs for the ws but i cant read japanese and i can play all the final fantasys on the snes or gba. however i do enjoy playing me some tetris on the Ws its the first version ive played that let you hold pieces, and makimura is a killer as well.

That's an issue with JRPG's in general though, not the Swan. Here in Korea they release a lot of games untranslated, and JRPG's generally get released in Japanese. Quite a few people learn Japanese here, though not as many as English.

The best old Wonderswan site, Swan Song. Too bad the author stopped updating it...

Namco Wonder Classic is a better golf game than NGPC Turf Masters, so lets just scratch that from the 'why the Pocket is better' argument.

Other than that tho, the NGPC is better overall. More accessible games, cheaper, etc.

Have RGB modded both to play on my monitor (finally SVC on a 60" screen lol) but find the WSC from a hardware perspective, to be much weaker. NGPC is fighter heavy obviously but just handles better overall. WSC has a number of original RPGs and Square ports but some titles like Makaimura are a bit clunky.
