It appears that Sega may actually have been listening. After years and years of (mostly) awful 3D Sonic games, the company is now teasing something called "Project Needlemouse", billed as a return to the Sonic of old.

"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay" says Sega of America's Ken Balough. "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."

The teaser clip's tagline reads "Speed returns, in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up", with Balough confirming the game will, rather than be a retro-remake, be an all-new game built in HD.

It'll be out in 2010. No word on platforms, but the "HD" bit certainly narrows it down. What do you think, Sega fans? Do you dare to hope?

Apparently financial shock therapy has been proven to be beneficial to negligent companies.

Smart move on Sega's part. Interesting in the least.

I won't buy it, but it's what the fans want. I stopped being a Sonic fan, or a platformer fan in general for that matter, many years ago.

Well in the preview the character doesn't even look like Sonic...so this cycle is probably right

I'd like to see Sega do something 2D again. I haven't played a Sonic since Adventure 2.

I love how everybody forgets the Advance and Rush games on the DS. I won Sonic Rush Adventure on the DS and bedsides the stages with the boats you have to do to collect the chaos emeralds, the game is fun as hell and what Sonic SHOULD be.

Lets hope they got some brains and give us what we want instead of pandering to the fanboys and girls.

Second:
I actually enjoyed Secret Rings and Black Knight, as well as Unleashed. While I agree that Sonic was at his best in 2D, I don't believe they should give up on the 3D realm. I'd like to see another storybook series entry.

I jettison anyones comments if this title turns out to be a tonkesque revival of Sonic the Hedgehog of Genesis fame.

Sonic Adventure, when you played as Sonic, was great.

Why can't we get that again in a 3D title?

That formula has been beat to shit with a spike laced cunt penetrating rubber cock.

Time to revisit the roots ala' polygon rendered 1991 yore'.

I'm curious who the developer is.

For years I'd wanted to see Treasure make a Sonic game... that thought is almost irrelevant these days.

It'll probably be a lesser known developer - one with new visions and Hi-Def experience.
