Updated Information!
When: August 15th, 2009 from 1:00pm onwards into the early morning!
Where: Ramada Minneapolis. We'll have a ballroom and a separate room for hospitality. Website: http://www.ramadaplazampls.com/index.html
Who: Neo-Geo guys, SRK guys, anybody you want to invite!
Entry Fee for the event: $10 Flat fee for all entrants
What: The best gathering of Minnesotan gamers. A bunch of free play of whatever the masses would like to bring and share with people, as well as tournaments. There's no limit on the games you bring, but make sure it's something interesting, amusing, or fun. Tournaments will be held for a $5 entry each, with a 60%/30%/10% split of the money going as prize cash to the top 3 of the tournament. Tournaments are designed, scheduled, and run with the uber help of Shogun17 (see page 3 for equipment list information):

OK since I think we've got our "official" list of games down, here's a tentative schedule for the tournaments (this is subject to possible adjustment):

12:00 - setup
1:00-2:00 - doors open / sign ups
2:15 - CvS2 (PS2)
2:30 - BlazBlue (PS3)
3:00 - KoF98 (Neo-Geo or PS2)
5:30 - Garou (Neo-Geo or PS2 or DC)
6:00 - SF4 (PS3)
7:00 - SF3:3S (PS2)

After the last official tournament, we can run whatever else people want to do. We have the room until early the next morning, so we can play until like 4:00am or whenever.

I think we're also considering running a King of Fighters XII tournament somewhere in there are well. I'd say that after BlazBlue gets done, if we have enough time before SF4, then we could do KoF12. I guess speak up if you're interested in KoF12 and if it's popular enough, we can probably do it.

Tournaments will be overlapping and we'll be running a few of them simultaneously. This schedule also assumes we have adequate equipment to run things simultaneously.

It's long past time to start planning for the MN Summer Meltdown! I've spent the last couple days in contact with a few people about the planning stages of the gathering, and I'm ready to get this show rolling, but I want your support in making sure this is an event you will go to and will ENJOY going to. Get ready for some text, but make sure to read through because your involvement is what makes this happen.

My goals for the event:
1) To make this an event that can be cross-run by the Neo-Geo guys and others so that it maintains a level of integrity that you don't really find with a bunch of next-gen street fighter fans.
2) To ensure that the event is not EVO - it will contain tournaments but will be based on the fact that we MN people tend to like seeing each other and playing games together.
3) To build up good enough organization credit with you guys so that we can make a formidable Neo-Geo gathering in the winter which will be neo-centric.

Here's my proposal that I've talked about with Bobak and djdelly. At the end we can start discussion and whatever, because this is about what WE all want to do, so everything can be subject to change:

Gathering will be held at the Ramada in the place where the last summer gathering was (it was a Sheraton before), with a date possibly at the beginning of September or end of August if we're lucky, beginning with opening ceremonies at 2pm which would encourage people to come for the whole event, and likely continuing until 4am. We can also rent out a room for quiet time and refreshments, but that would probably be the sole purpose of the room - see below.

Entry fees will be based on whether or not people bring televisions, video games, and/or video game systems. Equipment lists will be organized between SRK and NG, with hopefully more things than actually will be needed. Main issue will of course be enough televisions to ensure tournaments move smoothly and quickly. There will be a desk at the front to sign in and pay money. I think it would be pretty sweet to get "Minnesota Meltdown VG Gathering - Summer 2009" lanyards with badges for names. We could batch order a hundred of those things for a decent price that could be made up in entry fees. That way we'd know if someone paid, and it also is a nice souvenir for going. If we get sponsorship, then it would be even easier to get the money to reserve the room and get this stuff.

Tournaments will be available for registry beforehand - I'd have to figure out a system - and at the site, likely at the same "desk" as the sign-in. The tournaments themselves will have classes by likelihood of participation:

Class S would be SFIII and IV, $10 entry. These would likely be held during prime time, somewhere around 8 or 10pm, but spaced out enough to let participants in both cool down. Class S tournaments will have a free play period for practice in the 15 minutes before the tournament.

Class A would be for $5. Games that are sure to be desired at the time, but this list could still be narrowed:
Samurai Showdown 2
King of Fighters 98
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

Class B would also be for $5 but these are more the side tournaments that depend on whether or not there are enough people. I don't expect many of these to make the final cut, but could be at the event for assorted playtime:
Magical Drop 3
Twinkle Star Sprites
Last Blade 2
Metal Slug X (Hi-Score Run)
Soul Calibur 4
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
Virtua Fighter 5
BlazBlue (could be in Class A, time will tell)
King of Fighters XII (same as BlazBlue)
Street Fighter Alpha 2 or 3
Puzzle Fighter

After that, the area would be carefully packed with other games to be played simultaneously so people can chill out and have that closeness that they like when meeting people. Non-tournament games could include games people brought from home, rock band, Magician's DS stuff, shooters, etc. Nothing too next-gen-ish, but the normal fun stuff. From the pictures of the Ramada, it looks like we could fit quite a lot of stuff in that one room, so I wouldn't imagine it would be that difficult. That's why the extra room would be for quiet. People will be allowed to bring food for that room, but must wash hands before returning to gaming.

Sometime around the SFIV tournament, because it will be prime time, we can get a group picture of pretty much everybody. With estimated attendance anywhere from 30-75 for the course of the day and night, that will probably be the height of the crowd.

On to the questions for the community
1) Does this sound appealing?
Subquestions: Does the tournament setup make sense? What games would you want to play? Is one day the better idea for the event? Would lanyards and badges be cool to have? Should we do food planning?
2) What dates would work?

I'm ready to start getting stuff planned, reserved, etc. and figured the NG guys would be the first to get asked. Once we have a set plan, we can coordinate with the SRK guys and figure that out as well.

I think this year could be effing awesome. :vik:

Awesome. It's nice to see someone from the Neo Geo side of things step up and take the reins.

It sounds like you have a good start on this. As far as dates go, I'd suggest shooting for early to mid August, before folks go back to school. I presume this would be done on a Saturday. If so, the 15th might be a good date to shoot for.

Also, if you don't want things taken over by tournaments, then we should probably pick and choose carefully which tournaments to run. Here's my take on which games we might want to run. Plus, $10 might be too much - I think a $5 entry is better for a casual tournament like this. I'd only do $10 if you're looking to get better people in from farther away to try to make money (since the pot is higher).

--FOR SURE ($5 entry)--
Street Fighter IV
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Garou Mark of the Wolves
King of Fighters XII
Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix

--MAYBE--
BlazBlue (might move up to for sure)
Capcom vs SNK 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Samurai Showdown 2
King of Fighters 98
Magical Drop 3
Twinkle Star Sprites
Last Blade 2
Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core
Metal Slug X (Hi-Score Run)
Soul Calibur 4
Street Fighter Alpha 2 or 3
Super Smash Bros Brawl or Melee

I think that running too many more than 5 tournaments would probably make things feel like it's all tournaments again. I think last time we got 11 tournaments in, which was a lot. We'd probably want to reduce that a bit, although it makes it easier if multiple people are able to run tournaments so that one person doesn't end up running everything.

I was talking with Bilal, we're both ready to help --it had better be before mid-September this time.

Yup, I'm in.

I know you're a bit biased Shogun, but I think you're list is a bit too Street Fighter heavy. Street Fighter IV is obviously going to be a big draw, but I can't believe there isn't going to be more than a passing interest for games like Soul Calibur IV, Tekken 6, and Virtua Fighter V. And I'm not even bringing up Neo favorites like Last Blade 2, and Samurai Shodown II. But thats stuff we can discuss later.

I'll hit you up a little later this weekend, ookitare. I'd want to know what you'd want me to do. I can get in contact with a friend of mine over at Nissan and see if he'd be interested in putting up any sponsor funds. I could also talk to one of the reps at Pernod Ricard or Beam Global, and I'm sure that they'd be more than happy to supply stuff like t-shirts, caps, and shot glasses, however, then everyone at the gathering would have to be 21+.

You're also going to want to hammer out a time that you want to do this, so you can make reservations at the hotel. I'm hoping for something before September 11th, since I'm going to have plans for that weekend and the following as well.

This should be fun!

I'm totally down with this, been waiting almost 2 years. :buttrock:

I could help out with the equipment...I've got a ton of power strips just laying here (ask djdelly lol) and some extra TVs. I could also bring my MVS 1-slot cab if I can get someone to help me lift it out of my apartment.

If we're doing KoF 98 it'd be cool to throw some Ultimate Match action in there.

If there's food I can grab a bunch of bulk stuff at Costco with my membership.

I guess I'll just throw out dates - August 15th or the 22nd? I'll look into reserving the space. The 29th is no good for me, and I think labor day onwards is a little late to do it.

Ramad - I'm sure we'll talk more in the days to come, but you might as well bring up your thoughts on what games to play and we can always work stuff out. I agree that the main games are too SF centered, and we should really only have one or maybe two SF games really featured. That way we can round things out with Neo games and other fighters like Guilty Gear that aren't capcom-made. But that's just a thought.

I'm glad people are already jumping on board! Spread the word!

I'd be interisted if it was a really BIG event. Like 100+ people, but if it's only a dozen or so guys from the forums it would be kinda weird. Maybe some Gamestops or comic shops would allow some fliers to be set out a month or so before the event. An official website wouldn't hurt either.

I could maybe bring my MVS cab too. I'm not sure about the legality though. I'm pretty sure you need a license to operate. Damn you Uncle Sam!

Feel free to bring your cab. You won't have any problems.

As for the 100+ event, it can be done. That's a bit large though. 40-60 folks is more than enough, otherwise it could get a bit crowded. Keep in mind, this is going to be held in a large hotel meeting room, not an auditorium at the State Fair.

Which reminds me ookitare, when you reserve the room(s), make sure that you SEE the rooms before you confirm. I sort of didn't do that one year. That turned out... um... well, awkward. Getting 25 folks in a room designed for 10 around a table isn't very fun, logistically. :(

The website and fliers thing is great, but costly. You want to keep costs down as much as possible, otherwise you have to charge more for folks to enter.

:lolz:

Your comment about the heavy Capcom tourney, doesn't make much sense b.... SS2 is a great game I love getting my ass kicked in it, but we've nerve had more than 8 people enter....(TSS usually has more people:tickled:) you gots to have a tourney's for the games most people are going to enter.

fetttttttttt

We proven before that it is possible to get 40-60 just by posting here and on SRK. we are not rookies when it comes to throwing a event together... feel free to check out some of the old gathering threads in this forum.

airline ticker tells me I'm there for under $250... :smirk:

I said that it was STREET FIGHTER heavy. I don't mind Marvel vs. Capcom 2, or SNK vs. Capcom, or Vampire Savior, or something. But when its ALL Street Fighter, that's just dull as hell. "Yay, I'm in 5 tournaments, and I can play Ryu in all of them!":oh_no:

But you're right. If its what they want to pay to play, then yup, its the Street Fighter Gathering, then.

Wow... is that my Neo bitterness kicking in? :lolz:

duder come on it's the same problem every year.... its also the same reason why we have never had a KOF98 tourney.... :loco:

pick 3 Capcom Mains and 3 SNK mains... see what happens...

Push those 6 tourney's and have other people run side tourneys like Wes did with ST at the winter 08 gathering.

just my $.02

Maybe some Gamestops or comic shops would allow some fliers to be set out a month or so before the event.

Speaking of that, anyone think that the local video game store Games N Go can help us out? Maybe they can help present it along side NG and mnstreetfighter?

Reason why because they have been really nice to our SRK crew as far as local tourneys and I think it would be look as far as promoting their store (which has a lot of retro stuff) and the gathering.

As cool as that sounds, I would dislike to not have the gathering all ages. That would really limit the turnout.

I actually think Capcom mains and SNK mains would be a good idea, strangely. Certainly, it's a good idea to get as many people involved as possible, but I think it would also be pretty cool to get people playing KOF98 who haven't really played before. Part of the event used to be for me playing games that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise, or could afford for that matter.

I think time will tell on a couple games like BlazBlue and KOFXII, so I think we may have to hold off on deciding whether those are in until later. I'll put up a survey on surveymonkey today so that people can fill out a lot of info and give their opinion on some stuff regarding the event.

I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that this event is a great event for the MN video game crew, because not many people in the rest of the US know how badass we are. At the same time, I don't want this to look like EVO MWC, because we don't really have the background yet to do that. We can publicize and get things together, but once we've done this a couple times and we get in contact with the right people, we might be able to have something that anybody in the area would want to come to, even if it still doesn't have that many tournaments. Maybe I'm too biased on the nature of the event, but as long as we keep the feel of the gathering as fun and social rather than competitiveness between sociopaths, we can get lots of people to come and enjoy themselves.

As cool as that sounds, I would dislike to not have the gathering all ages. That would really limit the turnout.

I agree. I wouldn't have been able to go to the gatherings I did if they'd had the age limits.

More info later!

I lean towards the 22nd --earlier would run into people's vacations.

I'd prefer the 15th. My dad's 60th bday is on the 25th so it's looking like we might do something for him the weekend of the 22nd. Having this on the 15th would alleviate any possible scheduling conflicts for me due to that.

Is the 4th of September pushing it back too far? I know folks are back in school soon after, would that work for folks?
