I've decided to consolize my MVS for fun and convenience. I was going to go with a small aluminum case but then decided, why not put it in a AES shell. I actually found one on neo-geo.com

I have not finished but have started. The hard work is done, getting the board to fit and getting the slot wide enough for the MVS cart. Fortunatelt I was able to do this to the slot without making it look homemade ect.

I am going to have a unibios installed (stereo mod as well) for the ability for booting up carts in AES mode mostly.

I thought I'd track my progress in a thread here:

Sure did, a little to proactive really.... late hours working on it.

I am ditching the memory card slot since there is no point for it and it will make the fit difficult. I am going to try and keep the original look as much as possible but my goal is for it to look clean and professional as possible 1st. Like I doubt that I will keep the headphone jack and volume slider, if i don't though I will be sealing and sanding it over so it doesn't look getto with blank ports ect.

I am going to go over the shell with a flat black vinyl die once I'm done to get rig of all the scratches in the case ect. But The SNK and Neo-Geo symbols will be kept. I was VERY pleased I could save the dust doors with hardly any modification at all to them, I only had to file down their base a bit so the would open wider. Nothing that is visible from the outside or hardly even from the inside either.

Does anyone have pics of what the AES looks like with the top off when the original innards are still inside?

Damn, I wish I could find a broken AES PCB now. It's not needed but it would streamline the process alot.

salvaged the memory card slot. it won't be functional b/c there is no port for it on the mvs board but it will look better with it. had to trim the bottom edge but it fits and would still allow the card to pass through.

DSC00206.jpg

the way I'm doing it the MVS board will sit below the front controller ports ect.

The controller ports will be above the jamma slot, they won't contact it. then I'll bring the wires off to the left back to the controller ports and various power and AV ports.

This is actually gonna work, I've located a busted aes pcb (hopefully, waiting to heard back from channelmaniac) so I'm gonna get that and cut out the middle so the MVS sits inside it without touching it. This way as far as the power, AV port, power switch and reset button.... I can just connect the wires to the originals and not worry about buying and mounting 3rd party ports. Well except the controller ports since that part of the PCB will be cut away.

the blue shows the pcb cut away to make room and the red circles the switches and port's I'll use. The yellow dots show the screw holes. I can use those screw holes to keep the pcb in place even after I cut what I need off. Using the PCB is just to make things easy for mounting the ports ect and at the same times will make it look legit on the outside by using the original buttons ect.

Great Idea man! This is one of the best I've seen. Mad props.

(and wait... Does the mvs cart fit thru the cart slot without having to do any major modification?)

Don't skip the memory card slot. You will miss it when you realize that your system is perfect minus one feature that other Neo Geo players have. Plus, how are you going to start the Metal Slug games from any stage?

I tryed do that months ago....whitout lucky....

Whit 1C you cannot use Reset Button anymore, the motherboard need be cutted to use the original AES DB15 control.....

After these questions ive bought one 1B (perfect to do that) but i dosent have time to finished him.....

My suggestion....use the 1B motherboard.......

I was going to just wire the reset button to the power, so pressing it just kills the power for a second. That's how the AES reset button works anyway, they are hard resets ect.

I'm not going to have to cut the MV1C for the control ports at all, it seems alot have that issue. you are trying to mount the board to high, my is mounted low as possible, the ports for the controllers are above the MV1C board.

The MV1B has a cart slot that is horizontal, that won't work for me.

I wont have a memory cart slot but I never used saved data on my neo CDs, even metasl slug. I'll live without it. I know of no way to wire up a memory card slot to a MV1C. Is there a way?

(and wait... Does the mvs cart fit thru the cart slot without having to do any major modification?)

yeah nothing major, not to me anyway.

Thanks, just curious. I really like where this is going by the way. Good luck. I'll do some digging see if I can't figure out a mem card situation???

Look....my 1B "was" horizontal....since i removed the connectors i can now use them in vetical....and now the 1B is more small and flexible than 1C......

The slot will be upside and the "motherboard" will be downside....no need cut the board...i can use the resebt button as original...and all will be placed upside of the empty original aes motherboard.....

As i say before i need time to finished this consolized.....

Well...good lucky in your project man :buttrock:

The 1C is still the smallest. I really dont know why people think the 1B is. The 1B has a larger surface area than the 1C.

Macck, you're nuts for doing that.

Yes Xian...1B is more large...but if you rotate them 180º back the 1B is the smallest....i know its hard work....but if i not try i will never know

After my crazy idea...who is more smallest to put inside of aes shell ???

If will work...hehehe...is another history....

Oh My GOD DUDE! Mack, thats nuts, but You just gave me an entire new look at it. If it is folded like that, you could make a TINY ASS MVS System, and that right there would also probably fit in the Aes body.

Holly shit that is alot of work though. BuT!, wouldn't you need to criss cross the wires over since you flipped it, and did a 180 rather than just flattening the pcb. I'm talking the wires from the left side now need to go to the right side, and vise versa. I like this... I really do!

Don't forget to leave space between the PCBs when it's flattened or you can get some nice arcing. Make sure you make it rigid to prevent flexing when inserting carts in the slot. It's going to be narrower but A LOT thicker than the 1C as you have to mount it on standoffs so you don't smash any caps and make clearance for a few things on the opposite side.

Good luck dudes.

Both of these are going to be interesting to see the turnout.

What if he were to make tiny, but strong supports, keeping it as close together as possible, but put something rubber between the two pieces of the board? Rubber as it isn't a conductor of electricity should keep the arcing from happening, and thus should make it easier to keep it all very very slim.

I just realized that the board is actually now halfway upside down, and that isn't that great of an idea to me. What I would try is to re-rout all of the wires so that you would flip the board on the bottom over, making it so that the heat sink isn't touching the plastic of the AES case. But that is just me.

Good luck to both of you, I like both Ideas ALOT!!!

Nah, if he's consolizing it he doesn't need the heatsink if he runs +5v only.

Hey Macck, what kind of enclosure do you plan on putting it in? You better not say a NeoCD...lol

well I haven't heard back from the broke PCB owner so I'm gonna have to move forward without the broken AES PCB.

I've figured out the reset button now I need to do the power button also.

Macck the problem I have with what you've done is you are introducing a much larger chance of things going wrong due to the amount of wires used.

Hey Macck, can you record the soldering of those wires on video and then speed up the playback and upload it on youtube?

If you're doing a 1C, the memory card is out of the question. It's theoretically possible, according to Razoola when I asked him his opinion, but someone is going to have to figure out how first, and I'm sure it would be a ton of work. Would be awesome though.
