Mislabelled SS1 AES?

Hi, has anyone else come across this:

I have a copy of Samurai Showdown that I bought "new and sealed" from a UK vendor. Everything is in mint condition but under the cart label there appears to be another label with different artwork.

I can only see the edge of what's underneath and I'm not going to start peeling things off.

Did SNK relabel their carts Japan-English? Or is there something dodgy going on?

If I remember some SNK games got the hasty relabel treatment. I would wait for confirmation from a more knowledgeable member before passing final judgment though.

I heard about this issue before. Apparently SNK would relabel their stock with new stickers to accommodate the demand in other regions rather than manufacture entirely new carts. Samurai Shodown 1 and 2 seem to be the games I've read about this happening the most with.

Yeah, there's a theory that that's the reason for the rarity of the Euro Kizuna Encounter - unsold carts were shipped back to Japan and relabelled for the Japanese market. The few that got sold immediately became ultra-rare.

Big Bruno's the one who first told me about this - he knows more about it.

Personally I've always heard about double-labelled AES carts 'fresh from the SNK factory'.

All in all AES market has always been a niche, with niche production runs, niche strategy, and all. Guess that's just the norm.

I have an English SS1 that is relabled. I bought it new it 1992. I see by the color of the lower label that it's a Samurai Spirits label so I've never paid it much attention.

I too have a a Samurai spirits relabled two showdown.. I also have a Nam1975, that has to labels, as far as my research goes there was only one lable for nam75, so this has me curious as to whats underneath

I heard the really, really early copy of ss1 was like that, although thats the only one i've ever seen.

Isn't that some kind of a test/promo cart.

I recall seeing a Riding Hero of similar ilk.

Who had it, ResOglas iirc?

Yeah, ResO had the riding hero proto. I dunno, I remember talk of it before and it being labelled as just an early JP release, like real early, before they started putting the proper stickers on it I guess.

but yeah, it could be a normal cart where someone put the mvs label on, but I dunno why, or a proto.. hmm unlikely.

I'd say it'd be worth more than a normal jp ss1, but maybe not more than 2x worth.

I dont think so, i had one. Looks like any other jpn release with pictures. People saying it is a promo makes sense, as i too seen the riding hero similiar to that but from what i remember the promo's had no shockboxes?. Not sure.

Actually thinking about the nam1975 double label ...i am going to check the rest of my carts.

Nothing new, every video game company depletes overstock in a way. Just like how Nintendo redistributed 1st party games from other regions with the fami adapter in the cart.

I guess relabelling for different territories makes sense with the high manufacturing costs of those carts. Why spend a fortune making more copies when stock is sat idle on another continent?

Maybe there's a box of Euro versions of Kizuna Encounter sat at the back of a warehouse somewhere that someone forgot about, just waiting to be discovered...

I wish all manufacturers had SNK's region free policy. Then I wouldn't have to faff with boot discs on my Dreamcast.

Funny, my SS1 US I had back in 99 also had the double label.

Also, my SS3 I bought new from ncsx.com back in 2001 has the same thing.

Yeah that is true that they used to put stickers over the other region ones.

If I'm 100% sure , I had about 3-4 games that used to be like that.

Had a Fire Suplex ( jap version, not 3 Count Bout )with a jap sticker over another.
A Mutation Nation with a Euro sticker over another one too.
And I'm not sure about this one but Also my Euro Viewpoint had two stickers.

All of the SamSho's I had never got multiple stickers on it tho...
