So that is why I decided to find a way to upgrade them without modifying the cab, or overloading the audio amp.

The solution was a set of these:

Cambridge Soundworks SBS52 PC speakers.

The actual speakers within the shell are 3" 3W speakers, same as in the Astro City, only they have a deeper cone, and a shielded driver. The speakers are a direct bolt-in replacement to the stock speakers and they sound 100 times better.

If you have a stock Astro City, you owe it to yourself to try this upgrade.

What about compared to the New Astro's? I thought they sounded pretty good when I had it.

What store did you find them at? I did some searches at Best Buy, Circuit City and even Microcenter - no luck.

These speakers are about 10 years old. They can be had for about $5-$10 on ebay.

Bump! Installed these in a friends Astro. If you are running stock speakers on your original Astro, you are missing out...

Yeah man, this pretty much makes the stock speakers sound like junk. Nice, loud, clear sound.

Very cool thread, I've always wondered about swapping out the speakers on my Egret II.

Excellent idea 68k, I'm about to change the speakers in my Capcom cab now that I have a qsound amp fpr my CPS1 big blue I'm gonna put in some decent speakers like these, I know the size is different and all, but it made think clearly about the quality of speakers and such, 'cause what good is to have a nice sound amp if you can't have it work with nice speakers right?

I just tired this today on a New Astro City and it is a no go.

New Astro's have different speakers and these will not mount the same way. They mount a bit off center and require shaving off a bit of plastic to get them to fit in the New Astro's speaker enclosure. And to top it off they don't sound any better; if anything, they sound worse. A bit less low end.

I have never been crazy about the speakers in my New Astro's but unfortunately these are not the solution. If anyone has any leads on good replacements for New Astro's, please share.

I don't know why I didn't think to say this in my previous post but if anyone needs a set of these (Cambridge Soundworks SBS52 PC speakers) speakers, I have some you can get for cheaps. As previously noted, while this won't work for a New Astro City, your original Astro would love to have them. p.m. me if you need them.

I got a nice sounding shielded speakers .. guted them from a sony 32" crt TV .. they are almost free at thrift stores... have great sound and the amp is easy to detach from the motherboard in case you want to use it.

I've got this pair of speakers gutted (according to the previous owner) from a Daytona Usa cabinet, I plan to install them on my Astro City junk restoration project:
