Haven't owned a PSP of any sort, but the lower price on the Slim bundles I am seeing locally have me drooling. Anything to be aware of before purchasing?

new batteries are pandora-proof

there is no ejection button for the UMD tray, you open it by brute force. There is no lock mechanism, it is a little plastic part that bends and clips in place when you close/open, i hate this as it will break for sure.

Otherwise, the buttons seem a tiny bit better, the thumb pad still sucks, the directional pad feels better.
The screen is larger (not much but a tad) and better looking, and i saw less ghosting when playing MSX version of parodius :P I have 1 dead pixel ! (on the very top of the screen)
I am not sure there is a big improvement with battery life, but i played around 6 hours of Parodius Collections before depleting the battery.
The UMD drive can be much faster when data is properly organized on the disks.

I have not spent much time on it, playing phoenix wright 4 right now (DS)

I didn't know there was no locking mechanism for the UMD door. I don't want to mess around with anything like that. That is going to definitely be a pain in the ass down the road. LOL as if the damn things weren't already fragile enough with the 1st gen ones. I'll stick with my phat PSP for now.

barf ... If you ever decide to sell your copy of parodius collections, please let me know.

I haven't had any sort of problem with the new door on the PSP. It's not like it requires excessive force to to open or close. So as long as you take care of your stuff I don't foresee a problem there. I will say it took me off guard the first time I used it though.

The thumbstick is far worse in this revision than in the first PSP. The D-pad, however, is much better.

I'd recommend the new PSP over the first (considering the new screen and D-pad), but that's just my opinion.

It took me off guard at first too.
First opened it up. Went to put in a game.
Got the game in and flipped the switch at the top thinking it's the lock.
Only to find out it's the WLan switch.

But the cover isn't a problem at all.
Like fenikso said, as long as you take care of it, it should be fine.

The D-Pad is better on the Lite than the Fat.
Still a pain to play 6-button fighters like Alpha 3 and the Street Fighter Remixes on the Capcom Classics colletion.

But the Guilty Gear Justice plays fine. Go figure. Maybe it's just me.

Overall, happier with the slim than the fat at every aspect except battery life. And that's slated to change soon. (This applies except for hacking the thing. I have no want to do that anymore.)

I'm rambling again, aren't I?

While I agree it's not in anyway perfect for fighters, Alpha 3 is now playable for me where it wasn't on the first one. It makes me want to track down a copy of Dark Stalkers.

Darkstalkers is completely playable on the Slim. Provided you alter the buttons to your liking.

Want me to keep an eye out for a copy for ya'?

Definitely. I wanted to pick it up back when it came out, but all the reviews said the controls sucked hard.

*I always alter the controls on fighting games. The developers can never seem to get it right;)

No issues as yet and I have probably used it every day since the launch.

I agree with what the others have said about the UMD door though. At first it was a kind of WTF? thing, made worse by the fact that there is no disc cradle at all inside either, but in practise it works just fine. No problems.

I do miss the runtime I had from the stamina battery I had in my fat PSP but at the same time I find the USB charging really handy so it balances out.

The screen is the same size, not bigger??? Also ..most people feel the analog nub is improved, not worse...

The batteries are proof against a woman opening a box containing all of the world's evils and setting them loose? :spock:

My nephew got a PSP bundle with Daxter, but I am not sure which version of the PSP it is. I do like the unit though. I may get one tomorrow.

The Daxter bundle is the slim. It's the same bundle I purchased. It gets my recommendation if that's any help.

The Pandora thing, I believe, is something to do with emulation or hacking (I don't really know I've never tried to put any emulators on a PSP).

GamePro claims that a PSP Slim using a "PSP Phat" battery will last almost twice as long as the Slim using its regular battery, due to being more energy-efficient. Has anyone tried this that can confirm or deny?

It does give much longer battery life..espically with a 2200 (?) mah battery. Sony has yet to release a bigger battery cover yet...but these are available:

http://www.psp-vault.com/Article1257.psp
These are third party and cost $3.83 shipped for a two pack. Looks like the piano black only but its better than nothing! Also you can pay by Paypal. Here is a direct link to the product http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9477

What purpose does the memory stick serve for the PSP? Trying to decide if the one that comes with the bundle would be enough, or if I should buy a non-bundle PSP and get a seperate, larger memory stick.

I also read something about some add-on Capcom "stick" that they gave out with their Street Fighter Alpha 3 games for PSP, but I haven't been able to find any hard details on it. Anyone know anything about it?

I'm pretty sure you can save game data, images, music, and videos onto it. If you plan on loading custom firmware onto the PSP, you can also save programs/emulators, roms, PSP ISOs, etc.

It wasn't a stick. It was a disk-type D-pad that would go on top of the PSP's D-pad to make it easier to use. It's probably less useful on a slim, since it seems to have a better D-pad than the old one.

I keep pr0n on mine.

And I'm happy with my slim overall. It feels light as hell, but the D-Pad and buttons are way more robust. The switchless UMD door does worry me a bit though, I could see that hinge breaking and then you'd be buggered.

Yeah, you can put pretty much whatever you like on the stick.

I have a 4GB memork stick and there is currently about 1GB free.

Mainly I have PS1 games and PSP demos on there, and that is just legit stuff.

Also have a bunch of MP3s as I use the PSP as my portable music player too. Works out well for me as I mainly just listen to long DJ mixes so I'm not having to screw around searching/changing tracks. Although I did get the remote control headphones which make it easy to pause/start it and change volume etc as you would imagine.

Next year I'll probably be grabbing an 8GB stick...

I will likely be picking one up today or tomorrow. Fred Meyer's has a coupon in the paper today that is good for either $10.00 off $50.00 or more, $20.00 off $100.00 or more, or $30.00 off $150.00 or more. It is only good for certain sections of the store, but it includes Home Electronics, even the console gaming hardware.
