Router problems xbox 360

I have been strugling with this modem for awhile. A netgear WGR614 v5. Problem I am having is with xbox live. In games, halo 3 for example I can play online fine. However, if I try to join a friend, or a friend tries to join me it says

"sorry we're having network problems"

So I do some investigating and see that I need to configure my router. I log into www.routerlogin.net or type my routers IP. I go into the settings

"Port forward/Port triggering"

I would also like to add that if I go into to edit these setups for some reason they are set to starting and ending ports 16 for both setups. Is this right? However if I am looking on the page that displays my setup (where I can just see it and click edit if I feel), I can see the 88, and 3074 that I set the ports to. I don't understand why this is. I went in just yesterday and manually set these to starting and ending ports 88 for setup one, and 3074 for setup 2.

Heres my setup

Setup #1

Service name = AIM
#1 Service name = Xbox3601
Type = TCP/UDP
Starting port = 16 (these should be 88 for both but changed to 16 automatically)
Ending port = 16
IP for the xbox = 192.168.1.5

Setup #2

Everything is the same except

Name = Xbox3602
Starting Port = 16 (these should be 3074 for both but changed to 16 automatically)
Ending port = 16

I also went to UPnP and turned this ON.
Here is what I am getting

UPnP

After all this xbox live still says my NAT is open when I load up Halo 3. Initially yesterday when I configured my router I could actually join or be joined by friends. Now I am having trouble again.

I have the same model router. Don't setup up the port forwarding. It doesn't work. I upgraded to the latest firmware and that solved the problem.

I'd upgrade your firmware, and potentially disable UPnP. That shit never seems to work right.

Xbox Live uses a large variety of ports these days. The primary forwarding should be set up something like this (any is the originating port if that's an option in your config).

UDP Any -> 88 (Kerberos)
TCP Any -> 3074 (Basic Send)
UDP Any -> 3074 (Basic Send)

There are some additional ports that might also be accessed by live though:

Server Port (If your system is acting as a server, this is the port)
TCP Any -> 22042

Voice Chat channels:
TCP Any -> 22043-22050
UDP Any -> 22043-22050

Peer Pings (Keepalives and latency identification):
UDP Any -> 13139

Peer Announce and query:
UDP Any -> 6500

DNS Queries (probably don't need this one, but who knows):
UDP Any -> 53

You want to re-verify that your 360 is also using a manual IP address. While it's unlikely that a device on your internal network will grab a new IP unless you're moving systems around etc, it's better to be sure so that you can eliminate that potential variable and frustration should your system suddenly get a new address and your port forwarding breaks.

You also don't want to use port triggering. Port triggering requires that data be sent outbound on a port before data is permitted to come inbound on that port. Basically, you have to initiate that connection, and that's not a good assumption on Live.

Only if you're using port forwarding. If it works fine without anything set (if you're not having problems with your router in the first place) then just leave it alone. Upgrading the firmware on this particular Netgear router fortunately gave me that freedom. I also hate setting specific stuff because then it doesn't always work if you tend to ever move the 360 and plug it in on a different network like I do. Then you have to reset the gateway every time unless you have both networks setup with the exact same addresses.

Thanks for mentioning the other ports. I didn't know about those.

True, if you're lucky enough to have a Vista certified or Xbox certified router, you're all clear with no hassles.

Personally, I'm on FIOS, and I don't mind configuring my setup. The FIOS gateway is far superior in terms of customization to the shittastic DSL and cable stuff that I've dealt with in the past. UPnP works for some things, but I've determined that it's just not terribly reliable in most of the cases that I worry about, so I always go manual.

This one is certified by Microsoft, but you have to upgrade the firmware before it works right apparently.
