Just got back from a sneak preview. All I can say is despite being very bitter about some of the things being leaked out there, IT WAS A VERY GOOD MOVIE. Seeing the trailers and still images don't do these things justice. The effects are amazing and they really do justice to them IMO.
Yes there are parts that we could've done without, but overall it's a damn good popcorn flick. And the last 30-45 minutes are about as action packed as any movie out there. Also, hearing Peter Cullen as Optimus is freaking great, the movie opens with his dialog and it was like I was back as a kid watching the show.

Negatives: Horribly blatant product placement, cheesy parts, not enough Starscream's bitching and arrogant attitude.

Positives: They look incredible, action scenes are insane, Optimus is dead on, smoking hot girl (Megan Fox I believe), it made me feel like a kid again.

I had my doubts like everyone else, and I'm sure a lot of the people already sour over it still won't be moved. But as far as I'm concerned it did a great job of bringing this franchise to the big screen.

Oh, and I think the thing about Optimus and Megatron being brothers is getting blown out of proportion. I got the impression that the term was used as being fellow Cybertronians, not literal "brothers."

Ask any questions if you got'em.

Man...the fact that you said it's actually pretty good, is making me want to see this travesty of a so-called Transformers movie. I will probably end up watching it one way or another. If it's good, I'll probably still wish that it wasn't branded as Transformers. I'm pretty sure I'll never get over it, but thanks to your review I will at least watch it.

As far as the 1-18-08, I just did a quick search and Dark Knight opens that day. Though the monster sounds wouldn't make much sense.

Dark Knight is July 18th, not January.

[Edit] - Trailer is probably "Cloverfield"

For the lazy:

AICN EXCLUSIVE! More About The Top-Secret JJ Abrams Film CLOVERFIELD!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I think I poked a hornet’s nest last week when I revealed a first few details about the top-secret CLOVERFIELD, which is the film that caused Latino Review to get confused about whether or not Abrams was directing STAR TREK. It’s not their fault, frankly, because things have been airtight on this one so far. I’m not even 100% sure who’s directing it. All I know is that the film shot a trailer before there’s been a frame of real film shot, and we’re going to see that trailer soon. If I were betting, I’d say it will be in front of TRANSFORMERS, which sounds like the best place for it to play.

Why?

Well, check out this description of the trailer, and then go read what I wrote about it last week. Sounds pretty groovy, doesn’t it?

I just saw the Cloverfield trailer at work and it's going to be pretty intense! It is from the perspective of people's camera in NYC. A huge earthquake breaks up a going away party. The people at the party go to the roof top just in time to catch lower Manhatten erupt into a ball of fire! They make their way to the street to witness the head of the statue of liberty fly down the street, end clip with screaming! Insane!

I look forward to this one!

I enjoyed Transformers.

You pretty much hit it head on. There is cheese but even the movie is in on it. The action is amazing and the story stays true to the original. The charicters are great and the effects were holyshit good.

The film was amazing. All the campiness of a g1 episode with the dazzle of todays special effects. I think Bay did a fantastic job, and if I think I know which direction he is going with the sequel (any real fan should know once you see the movie), its gonna be insane.

BTW, before the movie started did they show a preview of another movie and not show the title. Looks almost like another godzilla movie or something??

So far, reviews I've read from people who have seen advance screenings and whatnot have been 100% positive. Even Transfans seem to be digging it.

Still sounds pretty damn horrible to me but then all Bay's movies have been all flash and nothing else.

I'll still stick with the original movie and pass on this turd

Yep, the next one will be crazy, assuming this does pretty well, which it should because the word of mouth on this one should drive it through the roof. I expect the DVD sales to be insane as well. It's the first movie I've been to in a long time where the audience cheered, clapped, and gasped in multiple spots. When the Autobots appeared, when Optimus dealt some pwnage...God, I want to see it again soon, I haven't felt that way about a movie since I was little. I hope it slaughters Spiderman and Pirates, 2 movies that really failed to impress me beyond being mildly entertaining.

The setup at the end is great, I'm thinking some additions will be Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, and probably Arcee for a female addition on the Autobots side. Yeah they're obvious choices but really who else would be major personalities? Personally Skids has always been a personal fav of mine. Plus I'd imagine they'd up the ante by using at least one combiner for even more eye-candy. And Soundwave, how they got away with not putting him in this one is beyond me.

This movie failed as soon as Yellowjacket became a GM product (especially the new and ugly Camaro) and they gave Optimus Prime lips.

And of course they have to kill off the black Autobot first.

How bad was the "Horribly blatant product placement"? I just couldn't believe how bad it was in The Island. It's like all of Bay's movies go to the highest bidder.

I still think the whole thing with VW and Lamborghini not wanting their cars in the movie is BS, even though there's MANY reports saying they don't want their cars associated with "War Toys" yet it was fine in the 80's.

I know full well that Transformers is just used to sell toys, but I loved all the characters, but looking at a lot of the adds made me feel like it was going to be an action packed add for GM cars and trucks.

Also, how are the OTHER voices. I know Peter Cullen is Prime, but how was the "new" Megatron and the other characters? And do they talk much? Because what I've seen didn't have them talking and it almost made them just look like monsters.

Good to hear some people are liking this, I've been fairly confident from the start that this movie would be entertaining enough to warrant paying for a movie ticket. It'll probably be even better when it hits BD and HD DVD later this year.

To answer some of the questions:

Product placement, I felt like the worst one is when BUMBLEBEE changes to the new Camero. We get the slowmo almost car commercial pan around the whole car. Same with the other intros, though they aren't as bad. Others off the top of my head, Mountain Dew, Xbox 360, Nokia (although these are kind of funny/cool, especially the Mountain Dew one...). That's all I can remember right now, but I'm sure there's more thrown around in there.

Voices, I thought they were all pretty good. Keep in mind it's been awhile since I've watched some G1 stuff. Megatron was more like G1 than Beast Wars (Frank Welker?) with a more raspy, evil tone. Starscream only had one line in english I think (yes the Decepticons speak mostly Cybertronian), it was alright but not much to judge upon. The Autobots were all good too, Jazz was more hip hop than "jive" like in G1.

I would probably rate this movie an 8 and that's me kind of toning it down because it's easy for me to gush over it. The effects were all great, and although the designs mostly look like shit on paper (or screen), once they're moving they looked nice, even Megatron. Really the most annoying part for me was the government agency called "Sector 7." They were just an irritating band of MIB ripoffs that, had they been omitted or just been the Army, wouldn't have changed the outcome at all. It was just another unnecessary storyline/set of characters.

I would mostly agree with that. I give it an 8 also. This is coming from someone who wanted nothing to do with Michael Bay in my Transformers but he did it somehow.

I think the "gag" with Sector 7 is that they are useless and the movie even as much says so. I liked the fact that the film lets the audience know right away not to take any of it too seriously.

It's OK. The man attended USC. They spend an eternity trying to convince their students that the campus is located in a "safe" neighborhood.

Discussion-wise, I'm now approaching this project with cautious optimism. My hope is that a friend of mine in the Writer's Guild can get me into a screening at their place. As far as I know, Bay isn't a part of that guild, so he won't see a cent of my cash.

He's GoldBug by now. And he'll be back to being Bumblebee as soon as the Shells are in use again.

But don't mind me. Optimus died two years ago and Rodimus isn't shaping up so well.

i felt it more like they were comrades or 'old war buddies'. Apparently Megatron and Prime were both guardians of the allspark back on Cybertron. I havent read the prequel book, but the comic sort of insinuated that.
