I was doing my nightly sweep of ebay for goodies, when I stumbled across this interesting device:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=150108348975&rd=1&rd=1

I'm not exactly sure what it is, or how it works, but I'm thinking it has something to do with linking cabinets for Capcom CPS2/3 boards. I can't wait until it arrives so I can see what its all about.

Anyone have any ideas? Hopefuly I didn't buy a random capcom pinball component that was mislabeled...

Funny,I got that very same part with one of my Mini-Cutes.

From my personal experience, it allows you to change kick harnesses (cps-cps3 (?) ) without any alteration to the cab/wiring.

How much did you pay?

looks more like something that changes the jamma interface to another standard to me?

the top connector there is kinda similar to namcos jamma+ standard, and the three side connectors look alot like konamis..?

To me it looks like it maps the Kick harness to two different CPS1 and two different CPS2 wire configurations (I'm thinking VS cab and 4 player dual cab). It also looks like the connector on the top will fit a jamma harness, minus the voltage pins. I guess i'll find out when it gets here :)

It also looks like a video/audio splitter and I/O extender for the saturdaynight slam master game twin cab.

Didnt you buy that Qsound board he had up for sale? I decided untested was his way of saying not working, curious though if it came up fine.

I bought both of the QSounds he had for sale a few weeks ago. Both work flawlessly. Now I need to find a suitable transformer replacement to put qsound in all my cabs :)

Yah if you haven't noticed I'm a capcom nut (mostly CPS3, but I have equal love for CPS1/2).

I was actually thinking about buying that new generation set up from a gutted machine a few weeks back on Ebay that had everything; Qsound board, transformer and all that. I was still never able to get the 12v to power my Qsound board so you must be right about that transformer business. Any other suitable ones that could be substituted. its gonna be awhile before i can find one of those Im guessing, or at least until that Impress comes in. I know, lame. bragging.

Well I'm almost wondering if the company Himura Kaiden (i think thats the name) still produces suitable replacements for the QSound amp. I goggled their webpage a while ago and it explains their whole AC -> DC conversion + isolation, which is what makes the QSound so crisp. I have to do some more research, i'm sure I can find a replacement, just gotta find the time.

You are sure that the board was setup to properly output through the RCA jacks right?

right on Bill, report back with your finding please.

yeah I was trying to run it through an Alpha 3 board, when it was set to mono it still had audio but nothing noticeably different. When set to Stereo however there was nothing. Not even with the volume turned up all the way on both the board and the cabinet. This is a Windy cabinet so it has the stereo/mono plugs similar to the astro city cabs (small yellow 4 pin blocks). Did not appear to be any faulty wiring on the stereo connector but I have no way to really tell without being able to test the Qsound board which I pulled (working) from a CPS2 cab. However with the 12v line attached, the red LED did light up, but Bill expressed eariler he had the same problem and when the AC transformer was connected the LED was noticeable stronger. My guess is it just isnt enough or else my wiring is strange on the stereo connector.

Nah dude, completely different amps. A car sound will give you amplified stereo, however it will NOT give you simulated surround sound from stereo speakers (like the QSound does). Major difference....

Bill, can you confirm this? According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QSound
Q-Sound is built into the games themselves (even lists some PSX console titles and music albums mixed with Q-Sound). Meaning there is nothing special about the amp or speakers.

thats a good point actually man. I had noticed that as well when perusing Ebay and I seem to recall the street fighter console releases boasting the Qsound icon at startup. I kinda feel like it must be an engineering lab for post production work that capcom sought some exclusivity with.

Yes, the QSound logic is in the board. The QSound amp is an audio amplifier that is perfectly tuned to work with the QSound technology. You can use a stereo amplifier just fine on a Capcom board, however it won't be the same as having the QSound amp. It has all sorts of filters on the board that isolate all of the different channels of the audio, and blend them just right. The audio is extra crispy too, which you won't get from a run-of-the-mill amp.

Capcom

I have been playing around with different power supplies to power the Q sound amp. I have a Capcom Impress amp and the Q sound amp is powered by 12V dc from the Impress power supply, but my speakers tends to hum when no game is playing in the attract mode.
I have seen pictures of a 17 Volt ac transformer that can also be used to power the Q sound amp. I have used a seperate arcade power supply at 12v dc to power the amp and the hum dissapears 90% but I am sure the 17 volt transformer is the way to go.

I would be very interested in any one elses answer to power this amp.

.

Try grounding the RCA connectors to the ground of the amp. You ussualy need to hack up the RCA cables to do so.
