Yes indeed, I've been playing just the normal 4 player mode and having fun. I had never even touched Push mode, and once I did, I then knew it was too late and Tetris would forever enslave me into its' sweet entrapment of blocky lovin'. Damn this game is good!

Edit: Changed for the fact that now this has become more of a matchup thread (which is very nice) so the title has now been changed as well. Although this does not change the fact that Tetris DS still owns me.

Can't any of the masters give me tips on how to improve my game? Seems like the really good players online hold out for the 3 liners and the Tetrises. I tried that, and it doesn't seem to be working for me. But neither does going for the 1 and 2 liners. I've been trying to make the pieces fit perfectly while trying not to leave open gaps, and if there's a piece I can't use, I hold it.

Any pointers from the masters? My ranking is like 5400 something right now.

All I can tell you is to mix it up. When you start out, try and stack to one side and then leave room open for one long blue piece. If you are really in a bind and don't have any pieces that fit together, put it in a place you know you can clear quickly to move on. Also, save some of your bigger ammo (lines being cleared) for after the first few minutes. Once you clear those lines, clear the grey blocks that stack up from opposing players. Also if playing 4 player mode, make sure and get those '?' boxes as much as you can. I used them every once and awhile, but they are vital and may give the the edge in a battle. All in all, if it doesn't work, improvise.

BTW: You up for some games?

From my experience, holding out for triples and tetrises may seen to work well in a single player campaign, when you have the pressure of clearing lines against a clock that is ticking down, you have to fully utilize the L blocks to produce the conditions that will give you on average doubles and triples. If you stack the blocks to leave 1 block wide pit to get triples or tetrises, chances are you will take that to your grave because an attack from opponent will easily screw you. It would not be a bad strategy to stagger it a bit. And don't dismiss clearing single lines as impractical, L and T blocks are the best in clearing out holes to produce setups for the big combos.

Looks like I've got some practising to do then.

I know it's early, but does anybody have any push strategies yet? I seem to have an irregular record against the computer on 3. I win once in a while, and lose once in a while. One strategy that seems to work is to keep a gap on one side or the other to keep the opponent from scoring tetrises.

Yea, that's a good start, keep one of the lines (on the far most left or right) empty. The goal is to have all your lines to the left (or right) of the one empty line filled up and use one of the "L" blocks (the orange or blue ones) to make a 3 line clear. Leave a hook of sorts so that whatever piece you use, it will completley cleare that hole back up so your enemy can't use that against you. That way you can still push the enemy back down, but not give them an opportunity to push you back. You should always have a "l" or "L" piece as your held piece just in case you have lines ready or if they are dumb enough to close up all thier lines on thier side and you can make some nice Tetrises.

Trust me though, even with all that, you can still get beat by them just getting the better start/draw of pieces/etc. So no matter how good you can be, you'll get beaten every once and awhile.

You know what, this is the first time I played Tetris again too.

I usually just adapt to the situation, you know, see what's coming up, and try to arrange the path for that "uber" straight line piece.

At least that's how I do it.

If you want some more practice, play the standard game on level 100 and up.
