i have the full KI2 pcb and hard drive set
my problem is it use to work as of last night.
it was acting a little odd i would keep getting a blue screen every few cycles during the opening demo.
i never noticed this blue screen fill in effect before.
after a few power cycles i would only get white horizontal bars.
both sound active and d-drive active leds come on. i get a deep beep tone.

so i started to push down on the connector by the hard drive thinking that the connector was loose.
then I would get the blue followed by a red fill in screen effect and the game would start sone as i let go the game would lockup. at some point the chip k12-U1 under the ribbon cable pcb got real hot. i also realized i was missing the heat sink on top of the 79r4600-100ms chip. maybe that is why things got so hot. i now have the heat sink back on. hope its not too late.

after that i only get the white bars or a slowing filling blue screen if i push down on the main pcb board by the reset button.
the original hard drive will not spin/rev up when i power up the pcb.
if i put a different hard drive in it will spin/rev up the sec i turn it on.
my pc can not detect the original KI2 hard drive.
i am starting to think that ki2s hard drive just went bad. its odd that it just stopped spinning.
i never seen a drive fail like that they always spin and just click a lot when they start to fail.

i cant find any real solid info on replacing the hard drive on google and only a few hints on this forum.
are there any sites or guides on how to replace the hard drive in games like KI2.

Thanks for the link. I also have 2 KI2 boards that aren't working because of dead hard drives. Didn't know that you can run them with compactflash cards.

thanks for the link.

if your hard drive is dead how do you write the .img or .chd files back to a new hard drive?
will i have to send the guy my bad hard drive so he can write a copy of his working hard drive to my new hard drive?

i hope i can use an image of the game....

Yes, you can use an image of the game, but I'll have to do some searching. I'll post up the link when I manage to find the info. I can't remember where exactly I've seen it.

If you don't have an EPROM programmer or know somebody who has one, your best bet may be to have this guy do it all for you since you'll need a new boot ROM programmed to use a replacement drive and you have the original drive to send him to prove you own it.

Here's some info on it. It's not as complete as I remember, but it should at least get you started.

uv eraser and burner.

H15. Can I use chdman to put a CHD file back onto a hard disk?

Yes you can, at least under Windows. You have to be logged in as administrator, and you have to know which physical volume your target hard disk is mapped as. The easiest way to do that on Windows XP and later is to right click on My Computer and select Manage from the menu. In the Computer Management window, in the tree on the lefthand side, select Disk Management. That will show you a list of all the physical hard disks you have plugged in. They will be listed as "Disk 0", "Disk 1", etc. Make a note of which disk number your target hard disk is.
Once you've done that, it's easy to "image" the CHD file onto the disk. Just use the following syntax:

chdman -extract imagename.chd \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEn
where "imagename.chd" is the name of the CHD file, and the "n" next to PHYSICALDRIVE is the disk number you figured out above.
This technique has been used by several people to restore dead hard drives on arcade games. Note that you can also use chdman to create a backup of a hard disk image in much the same way:

chdman -createhd \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEn imagename.chd
which is how most of the CHD images have been created.

Sweet deal. At least now we don't have to worry about a Linux boot disk. Thanks for the info.

can anyone verify that you should get a blue screen on a good pcb with out the hard drive?

i get white horizontal lines with faint red vertical lines now....

for a while when i pushed down on the pcb by the reset button i would get a blue screen.

i took a close look at the cpu and found some loose legs.
this is not the 1st time i have seen the legs on a chip become loose.(i fixed my martial champions pcb)
1st sign is the shity dull gray look of all the legs you know it was a half ass solder job.

i fluxed up all the legs and resoldered them but still have no luck.
i rechecked everything like 10 times and every thing looks nice and solid with no shorts.

my next step is to take the pcb to Philips( i have a friend that works in the lab). i will use the real tools to resolder the cpu and some other chips as needed.

The screen should be blue while booting, so it does seem like a bad connection somewhere.

i resoldered all the connections on the main cpu and checked every point for continuity and shorts all tests passed for each pin.(so many of those little fuckers)

now i get a blank screen with a deep tone.
no bars no blue or red screen.
if i remove the boot rom i get the white bars again.
now i am thinking my boot rom is bad...
will people with working boards get these bars if they remove their
boot roms(u98)?

Get anywhere with this?

I've been working on fixing my KI1 board for a while now. I don't see any physical issues with the board but it just boot's up to the white checkered board screen and i get the Bong.

Sounds like you have a friend with skills. Just wondering if you ever got anywhere with this.

You realize the people discussing the problem have been gone for over 3 years.

Usually the board screen with the bong = bad hard drive.

You can get them dirt cheap nowadays.

Yeah i saw that it was 3 years old and figured that the person was still a member. Trying to find out if people are able to fix these issues or do they just spend $250 on ebay to buy a new board or go the mame route. I was googling different killer instinct keywords and that forum posting came up. I've had this board stashed away in a box after getting new boot eeprom and CF hard drive replacements from revisionx.com. I sent my board to him to test everything and he said all the eeprom's worked and the hard drives and CF hard drives worked. but my board was having issues beyound his ability to troubleshoot.

A week ago i built an eeprom reader to read the eeprom off of an xbox to put in a new hard drive and it got me in the mood to tinker with my KI1 board again. Just trying to spur up any ideas to try or find a how to troubleshoot PCB issues.

I want to play KI1 and don't want to go the mame route or spend another $250 since i paid $300 for the complete cab. Since i broke it I'd like to fix it. :oh_no:

Those boards are finicky about their surface mount chips and tend to have legs pop loose when the board gets flexed.

They might simply need reflowing.

I was actually going to send this board to you :) but saw you're taking a break from fixing stuff. So then i thought meh maybe i can fix it. What do you mean by reflowing? I'm going to google it as well, but incase someone else is reading this and wanting to know :).

I'm back in business. I spent most of November through the first week of December on the road for the day job and am in the middle of digging out from under all the repairs that are here.

Reflowing: Resoldering the surface mount chips.
