Of the PS2/GC/X-Box generation? That's tough... throwing in PC since I can't even think of 10 console games (out of several dozen I own) that I 'really' like :spock:

City of Heroes (PC)
Morrowind (PC)
Natural-Selection (PC)
Panzer Dragoon Orta (X-Box)
Shadow Hearts (PS2)
Shadow Hearts: Covenant (PS2)
Soul Calibur 2 (X-Box)
The Longest Journey (PC)
Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines (PC)
World of Warcraft (PC)

TBH I haven't played that many grade A games from this gen, but out of the ones I have played I enjoyed these the most:

Resident Evil 4
DOOM 3
Outrun 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
God of War - played briefly
Devil May Cry 3 - played briefly
Half Life 2
Metroid Prime
Super Smash Bros Melee
Super Monkey Ball

Phew, that was tough.

This was a tough list to come up with, so I just ordered them in how much time I spent playing with them and how much fun they were for me instead of "critical acclaim" and "quality". Those are the only games I go back to or have gone back to.

I've realized the "discerning" tastes of gaming is garbage. It's all about fun and escapism. These games are the best ones for that.

Eternal Darkness
Shenmue
Rez
Metroid Prime
R-Type: Final
GTA: Vice City
Soul Calibur
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 3
Katamari Damacy (everyone has a child in them)

I played mostly ports and retro games this gen on my PS2, all the aforementioned games are the actual NEW games

Runner ups:

Zelda Wind Waker (probably my favorite 3D Zelda)
ICO (fun while it lasted)
Crazy Taxi
Jet Grind Radio
GTA3 and SA
Bangai-0 (I guess it's sort of a port, didn't know how to classify it)

This list isn't in any particular order.

Halo
Halo 2 (just for its online multiplayer. Not a big fan of the campaign. Its online is just incredibly well done)
Zelda Wind Waker
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow (I'm only at 40% complete right now but from what I've played so far... Wow great game. It's no SoTN, but it's still fucking fantastic.)
Onimusha (don't know why I like it so much. I just do.)
Resident Evil 4 (the only RE I really like)
R-Type Final
Gradius V
Devil May Cry

I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

I really wish I could get into those games.

Why? I heard it was glitchy... or are you just anti-XBox?

I don't really like X-box all that much aside from ninja gaiden and some of the various SNK ports, but also i like a keyboard and mouse over the controller. It's not too glitchy but you need a good PC to make it run smoothly, otherwise it gets slowdown and it becomes choppy as fuck.

Battlefield 2 - without a doubt this is #1, due to sheer fun and time consumed.

RE4

Castlevania DoS

Gradius V

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection (Xbox of course)

MGS 3

R-Type Final

Phantom Brave - I have a feeling Disgaea and the couple other newer ones are probably better, and I've only played a little of PB, but it's still amazing.

Castlevania AoS

Harvest Moon (Gamecube)

Jump Superstars would probably have made it on here if I had spent more than 10 minutes with it. My fault though, buying my DS with it and Castlevania simultaneously.

Ridge Racer V
Rygar
Metroid Prime
Pro Evolution 4

Thats all I could think of.

You actually liked that pos?

Like I said, despite the critical panning of my picks, I loved that game. It really recreated the "2d" feel of the games and adding some more elements into it. I thought it was great, intensely fun and challenging enough to keep me interested.

I WISH Metroid was done that way. Yeah, the engine needed some tweaking, but it's a solid base and *much* better than the garbage Metroid games.
