I'm thinking about replacing the monitor in my cab. The old one went out on me. I've found an exact replacement on eBay. I was wondering how difficult this would be to do. What special precautions should I take....I have never pulled/replaced a monitor before.

Thanks.

Take all normal electircal precautions (especially using some sort of grounding device on your wrist/hand) when installing it. Don't touch anything that looks like glass or has a "DANGER 10,000 VOLTS" sticker on it.
:D

Really, as long as you don't hold it by the tube or anything stupid like that you should be just fine. But as I said before, grounded wriststraps could save your life.

A grounded wriststrap would save his life, but kill his hand if there was an accident.

Electricity, by itself, doesn't do much damage to living tissue. It's the passage of current through tissue to ground that does. It's the reason why birds are able to sit on electric wires without dying - no path to ground.

If you're unable to properly discharge the CRT (It's not really that difficult), you want as much rubber, not latex, as possible between you and it. Ideally, gloves with long sleeves and a lab apron.

Haha  wussy. I can see it in my head... some guy in a biohazard suit replacing a monitor in a cab... HAHA!!! seriously though... just learn to discharge the monitor, and you wont need to wear any of that extra crap. Easiest way that I've heard of removing a monitor is by laying your cab on it's back, and lifting the monitor straight out. The end of the tube poiting away from you with the circuit board on it is very fragile and thin, so don't try to set the monitor down on it, as it will break, and you'll then have to clean up broken glass that exploded from the vaccum in the tube. Have fun replacing the monitor, and don't kill yourself.

Is this a good/safe guide for doing a monitor discharge?

That's the method I've used in the past when I work on monitors. Bob Roberts has a guide to making a little nicer discharge tool, but I've had good success with this method too. Some monitors bleed off their charge over time and others may not. For what it's worth, I've never had any loud snap, spark, etc from discharging a monitor. It's probably because they don't get a ton of use before a discharge like they would at an arcade.
