The First Neo game I played, still one of the best. Just beat it today, man that game is so fucking awesome...everything has held up great these past 15 years.

If you think the graphics and sound are dated, lick taint and die, everything's still badass. There's something about the first level that makes me keep on wanting to play it...one of the best first levels in any Neo game. But after that, holy hell this game is a freakin bitch to beat. I thought everyone was exaggerating the difficulty but damn...this game is really insane. Elta's basic attack goes too slow sometimes, IMO. I've got to say the worst thing about this game is that stupid maze shit with the ladders in the middle of the game -- really ruins the action and flow.

After playing through it, I was really amazed at what I had not known before when I last played it (too long to remember, years and years...): this game has a shitload of Castlevania and Altered Beast inspiration, not to mention quite a few of the stage backgrounds give me an R-Type feeling for some reason (what with all the bio stuff going on).

Magician Lord is a fucking righteous game, even now in 2005. Respeck.

Respect to you Lonesage for completing the game!!....the devils castle still gives me a hard time though!!.......back in the day i could just reach the next level...this title ranks amongst my faves for the neo...classic 2d platformer from a golden age & even today it makes the hairs on my neck raise when i play it!!....tip top..
Btw...does anyone know if there was a music cd released in japan for this?...arranged bgm etc??
Imagine a follow to this gem?....would have been a dream come true for us all...

Magician Lord is the dogs, no question about it. I just recently bought a copy from NeoBomberMan and am loving it to bits. I know exactly what you mean about the influences, I thought the same thing as soon as I started playing it. I just wish SNK had developed more games like this and maybe toned down the fighter love.

ML is still my all time favorite game for the neo.

Still ya gota love it's quotes such as.

"You be very dangerous.Be dead down here"

"That power is powerless in our presence"

"You,persistent guy.But your life ends right now."

To this day i still wish ML would get a update it's one, Neo title that deserve a part two.

One of the first games I had on AES back in 1990.

I have a question about the MVS cart, I got a Jap one on its way from NeoBomberman and was wondering. There are two romsets for MAME: one with the intro (just like the AES version) and one without. Is this 2nd revision common?

On my English MVS cart there's no intro, cuts straight to the title screen and nothing more. I'm still wondering who the hell that old guy is at the end of the game.

And oh yeah, fuck frogmen.

best video game quote ever:

"You persistent guy"

the way he says it is hilarious, I laughed my ass off the first time I heard it.

I actually never got a chance to play the game until a few years ago. I am sure that back in the day I would have pumped a lot of quarters into this great, challenging game :D

You really wouldnt get the AES intro with the UNIBIOS on an MVS? Thats strange. I know the UNI gives you the intro for cyberlip (thats the only one Ive seen)

Hm. Ah well. Still a very tough game indeed. And it is fun, albeit a little sluggish, a great challenge for anyone.

This is the game that got me into the Neo Geo, awesome music, amazing graphics, and some great translation lol.

Can't beleive I even completed it on the AES as it was so damn hard later on.

The Neo Geo CD version sucked somewhat as you could continue from where you left off, which made it too easy to beat. The AES ML was one of the few Neo AES games that was hard to beat at the time.

The Unibios won't give you the AES intro because it's not programmed in to the MVS cartridge.

It seems that the AES and MVS cartridges of Magician Lord have actual programming changes, to accomodate the intro and the whole start-the-level-over-when-you-die thing on the AES. If you played an MVS cartridge of it with an AES converter, there'd be no intro and each life would pick up where you died.

Later releases like Cyber-Lip and Mutation Nation had those extra intros that only played on the AES version, but the MVS game contained the same programming so they're on there if the MVS cartridges are played on a converter/Unibios/emulator.

on-topic, Magician Lord was the first Neo game I played back in 1990. I'll never forget how awesome the Stage 1 music is.

I've never played this game.

Previously, I've never felt compelled to play it either.....
You guys are changing that.

I should start looking now, then?

Definitely.

Of course, I do have nostalgia influencing how much I love ML, but it's still a great game. Its aged wonderfully, and still one of my favorite Neo-Geo games out there, Top 5 easily.
